Hey guys, returning MTG player coming back after about 1 year out of the meta. I understand Gatecrash comes out next month and I am wondering where to even begin with this meta in standard. I am looking to build a deck with an initial investment of $100, and build it up over about another month into a serious competitive deck. Now I understand no one can predict what the meta will be like after GC, but can anyone tell me which decks will still be relative to the meta? My other question is, should I just save my $$ and see what comes out of GC and just build next month? My favorite type of deck is a mid range aggro with a bit of control tied in (IE: Bant from 2011 with vengevines, birds of paradise, and counter spells). Is there anything currently like that people are playing? It is slightly overwhelming being out of the standard loop for a bit over a year and trying to re-enter :o. thanks in advance for any help!!
Decks are pretty daggon expensive right now, mostly because multicolor is so easy to make and splashing colors is very easy to do. If you want to make something FNM fun and viable, just do a tribal deck and use some of the cards from Innistrad. The cheapest to do (ATM) would be werewolves, and you might have to skip the Huntmaster of the Fells though if price is an object. U/W Spirits could also be doable, and Gatecrash would add some to that, but keeping it under a hundred dollars and making it very viable is unlikely.
You are guys misreading my post. What I mean is I am looking to initially invest $100 into a deck, with the intention of building upon it (IE:$50 every other week) to build it into a T1 deck....think of it like "financing" a T1 deck rather than plopping down $300 at one time. I am very interested in playing a Bant beatdown deck, is there anything viable right now? I just enjoy playing Bant colors together.
there's like 9x different decks that feature the bant mana base and then either splash black for drownyard or splash red for kessig wolf run and huntemaster
the problem is the bant mana base is a little over $100 alone, and playing guildgates instead of shocklands really destroys the deck, farseek is a pretty big deal in 8/9 of the decks
bant auras is the only one that does not play farseek and in that case it can't afford to have guildgates coming into play tapped
the only standard deck under $300 is rdw
you can't really just put in $100 with budget cards and add to it later, the cardpool isn't as big as legacy, there arn't any budget versions of thragtusk or shocklands or angel of serenity
one option may be to build uw flash and add red to it later
uw flash is all un/commons except snapcaster and restoration angel and it can afford to run guildgates instead of shocks
i've been playing flash for a few months now, it's extremely poorly positioned in most metagames right now though
Go naya.....
You can use the cards in most other decks.
And you can build tons of different styles.
You can use all the cards and branch into many archetypes....
But again unless u play rdw
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Did i mention $

Since no one else is even remotely answering your question, Bant beatdown just won the GP, and it's (relatively) cheap:
The expensive cards in this deck are:
Geist @25
Cavern of Souls @25
Hallowed Fountain & Temple Garden @10
Hinterland Harbor @10
Everything else should be able to be had for sub-10 apiece. You could easily buy the Geists and most everything else for under 100 if you shop around or use Ebay, and then from there invest in making the manabase better.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.
thank you for all of the replies/ideas. I should have mentioned that this is for MTGO, not sure if that makes a difference on the price or not. I am reading on MTGO-stats that Bant decks range from $200-$300. Maybe online prices are cheaper for the mana base? Also, how many standard decks do you guys have? i am afraid I will get bored with just playing one deck.

Ok cause the question can't be remotely answered.
You cant build a good midrange deck for anywhere near 100$.
Also, the deck you suggested costs 100$ for a playset of geists alo ne
Your not gonna get anything for that price unless you build a rdw without its best card hellkite

A Temple Garden offline will cost approximately 10$
Paper magic has always been more expensive than online product, excepting a few niche situations (like when everyone online wanted to play Birthing Pod decks, so key cards for those decks matched/exceeded offline prices).
I have the pieces to lots of decks; fact is that with such a broad manabase and large amounts of strategies, it's hard for me to get access to multiple decks because I'll have to trade a few staples for one deck to get the staples for another. I usually keep a playset of snapcaster, resto, geist, olivia, huntmaster and thragtusk handy, and a playset of all of the dual lands at all times so when the mood strikes me, I only have to get a hold of cheaper cards to do what I want to do.
Right now, I suggest Omnidoor Thragfire. Mostly because it's awesome fun and combo-like. It's my favorite deck and it has so many lines of play that it's very difficult to get bored playing it.
I believe that the most (or one of the most) powerful strategies you can be in right now is UWr flash. Snapcaster and Restoration Angel are still powerful, it has access to awesome charms and cantrips, and it's getting plenty of goods with rotation so it looks to still be viable.
If 100$ is your initial investment and you want the deck to be playable, I would either suggest buying 4 copies of a local event deck (the golgari one is the best, with Thragtusk and Woodland Cemetaries), as those generally provide solid value. I would then upgrade it to a Golgari Midrange list by Kibler, playing Wolfir Avengers and Deadbridge Goliaths.
Alternatively, you could play RDW, and upgrade it with Thundermaw Hellkites, and then eventually the R/B lands and move into Rakdos, and then from there you'll have a solid aggro base for rotation.
Best of luck!

Thoughts on proxies:
This is your best bet.
Land base for this standard alone is like.. 50$ or more.
