@eldub
Thanks, I will consider the maindeck Ratchet Bomb. Not a bad idea, especially for 1 and 2 cmc permanents, since I don't really run any.
I do have a lot of 3 cmc, but that is usually not a big problem. I play a lot of 1 and 2cmc removal and hand destruction, and with the Mutavaults and Underworld Connections and lands coming in tapped, I find I often curve out okay, since I only run 8 cards at 4 and 5cmc.
Would I like it a little smoother? Yes. Am I finding it a problem? Not really.
I really prefer Gary to BBV, hands down. Yes, there are times that BBV can get out of control, but Gary has saved me and won games so often, it is really my favorite card.
Thankfully Gr is pretty weak to the other decks right now because I don't think that we have a good game against it. Too many threats and too many ways to abuse their near infinite mana.
Went 4-1 at a GPT today. Beat 3 mono blue devotion decks in a row . I honestly don't know if I'm lucky, or if the people playing mono blue right now are just bad, but I've won 5 matches in a row against that list. Pharika's cure is a godsend against master of waves, and dark betrayal is clutch against nightveil specter.
My only loss was a 1-2 against white weenie where I was 1 draw away from topdecking a winning land with 2 gary's in hand gm3.
I also played some kind of weird green junk deck with smiter and advent of the wurm. Dunno much about that one....
This is the exact list i'm using right now except instead of The 1 Doom Blade I'm using a 4th Dark Betrayal. Planning to take this deck to Grand Prix Vancouver BC and a Theros case tournament next month.
What are the cards that are good against mono red devotion? Is whip the best one? And it's not even that good since it's slow and they exile your creatures instead of putting them into the graveyard?
The only black land destruction is destroy the evidence, which is 5 mana, and not remotely playable in other match ups.
I'm not interested in going into another color since I like the consistency of one color. Do I just have to suck up being a dog to red devotion, or is there a decent sideboard card for that match up?
pharika's cure is probably the best SB card vs mono red since it hit almost everything except for a reckoner and you gain 2 life. After board unless they have a crazy BTE hand, the matchup is usually pretty good in my experience.
Not mono red, not the heavy 1 drop version. If mono red 1 drop.deck was popular I probably wouldn't play mono black devotion. I figured the reference to chained to the rocks would be a give away which deck i'm talking about. Red devotion is slowly picking up in popularity.
Red devotion is with nykthos and it plays dragons and fanatics. It does chip damage to you then kills you with dragon/fanatic/Purphoros. It has powerful threats and cards you can't answer with hero's downfall (assemble, Purphoros).

But he is still right about Pharika's Cure. Burning-Tree, Ash Zealot, Fanatic, Frostburn if pumped two times all die to it. Reckoner and Dragon are the only ones who dont.
You are right about it picking up popularity but it has the same problem the green ones have in my opinion. They are completely reliant on Nykthos to go over the top without it they are just a slow mono-red deck and the creatures are quickly outclassed.
You are definitely not a favorite in the matchup but its winnable. Assemble costs five mana and is really slow.
The key is probably to race them with Pack Rats since their creatures pale in comparison or drain them for as much as you can with with Grey Merchant.
Thougtseize isnt bad against them either even it it looks like it at the first glance. They can get really awkward hands because of their over-reliance on Nykthos punishing them for it is great and you want to get rid of Assemble if possible.
I haven't played this matchup enough myself with mono-black so take my advice with a bit of salt.
My experience comes from watching dozens of replays and the tournaments and of playing Red Devotion myself for a bit after the Pro Tour.
But he is still right about Pharika's Cure. Burning-Tree, Ash Zealot, Fanatic, Frostburn if pumped two times all die to it. Reckoner and Dragon are the only ones who dont.
I thought that card was a given, I have 2 main and 2 in the board. I'm on Owen's list. Is there any good reason not to play Owen's 60?

Yeah that's how I won a game. The opponent kept a slow hand and I pack rat'd him out.
So I take it you're always supposed to go for turn 2 pack rat and hope they don't have removal? As opposed to waiting till turn 5?
I don't think there are enough cards to board in to remove all the thoughtseizes. So keeping them in seems like the only option. Though it's not a bad option since that is the only way you can interact with enchantments. Thoughtseize is obviously pretty good early since red devotion is a semi combo deck. And when I think about it, you're not favored in the late game, so drawing thoughtseize late is irrelevant since you're not going to win anyways.

Yeah you dont want the game to go long. It's all about racing in my opinion and you have enough tools to turn the turn the race in your favor.
Boarding out all Underworld Connections and bringing in the Lifebane Zombies looks good since the Zombie cant be blocked by them and maybe you can nab a Reckoner too.
I been using Owens list and while its been good overall generally, there has been a few match ups that have been difficult.
1) G/W Aggro
It seems like this deck is difficult to beat since it piles so many creatures on the board, making racing with pack rat very difficult. It also has very resilient creatures that dont die to removal easily. I am not sure how to really side verse this deck since the cures arent as good here as they are other decks. Duress seems good since they play a lot of spells to compliment their creatures. Usually against aggro I go -4 connectors, -2 pack rat/ demon depending on if im on the draw or not, and then add in 3 lifebane, 2 cure and 1 doom blade. Sadly this isnt working out too well since I get ran over by their creatures too easily.
2) Esper Aggro
This deck is really weird. If you CTRL F Cartel Artistocrat on this site, you will see what I mean.
Ive faced this a few times on mtgo and not sure if its a real thing. Either way, its difficult to beat. Between D-Sphere, Xanthrid Necromancer and Whip, I am not sure how you really beat this thing. Its literally a pile of cards that all hate on mono black. Its hard to go with the Pack Rat plan since they have Verdict and Dsphere and its hard to go the control route since they have tons of creatures.
Sides that I havent had too much trouble against the rest of the metagame. A little trouble at times against Orzhov Aggro but not enough to really write home about. I really dont get how to beat Seleysna consistently.
This might be semi-off topic, but out of curiosity, between Mono-U, Mono-B, and R/W Devotion, do they all share the same level of consistency/power level? To elaborate, if I were to play in an open meta tomorrow, would there be a reason to play one over the other or are they all on the same level. I have only played Mono-U before so I do not know the ins and outs of the other two, but I figured posting here would get solid input for at least 1/3 of my question.
Does anyone have a good plan in play and sideboarding against the W/b humans deck? I've lost to it in both matches, 1-2 and 0-2.
Pack rat hands have been too slow. Demons and spectres get removed. Lifebane zombie has been too slow.
I side in Pharika's Cures, a doom blade, and lifebane zombies. I remove connections and some hero's downfalls.
I have been running Turtenwald's latest build for about 2 weeks now and whenever I am playing against White Weenies or W based aggro decks I normally take the beating that should be expected Game 1 and get ready to get rid of the cards that hurt us.
Out: 4 Thoughtseizes, 4 Underworld Connections, 2 Desc. Demons
In: 3 Lifebane Zombies, 2 Pharikas Cure, 3 Duress, 1 Doom Blade, 1 Shrivel (This MNM I put in another Shrivel instead of the Doom Blade).
I normally keep a hand with 2 removals or a shrivel to make sure I can keep alive until a Merchant comes
So I just obtained this deck, so far I am really loving it, got first at my local FNM for the past two weeks. My only problem I can see is against Esper. (Haven't played against it in the actual tournament but outside when playtesting with my buddy). So what do we do against it? Here's my list I run
2-0 Dega
I honestly wasn't excepting to win this match up, was expecting Blood Baron to just wreck my face, but adding the Far/Away and blue splash really helped.
Game two was really close, I was at 4 he had two demons and a blood baron on board. I had him to 3 life and had 2 Underworld connections, a whip, a nightveil spectar and pack rat on board. He had already swung, he than rakdos returned me for 3 and made me discard two garys. (I was stuck at four mana) my next turn I drew thoughtsieze but whipped back gary for the win.
Round 2 Mono white devotion 2-0
Game one he got mana screwed pretty hardcore and I easily got him,
game two was much harder, He ended up getting me to two life, I cured a creature went to four, attacked with a 2/2 pack rat sending him to 4 life, than cast gary for the win.
Round 3 RG Monsters 2-1
Game one I got crushed, I mean it was like getting hit with a train...only worst.
He turn two BTE BTE BTE into a wasteland Viper. by turn five he had those Burning trees, the viper, a Ghor-clan, and a Stormbreath dragon staring me down.
Game two I was behind on board, ended up going into top deck mode getting everything I needed, Got a demon, a whip, and three Hero's downfall in a row.
Game three I crushed him, Turn two pack rat, turn three nightveil spectar, turn four erebos, turn five gary, turn 6 demon.
Round 4 Ghetto Naya (this is a home brew I made for my older brother since he didn't have a deck, was actually really good me and him were the only 3-0's)
Game one he would have beaten me if he had gods willing the right color. He had a Heliod, and 8 clerics on board, he had pacifism my demons and a single pack rat, he equiped a Ethereal armor to a cleric and sent me to 4 life, I top decked a Hero's downfall he cast a gods willing naming pro RED. ended up gaining me the win.
game two I crushed him, keep a hand with 3 Swamps, 3 Pack rats, and a whip...I got it simple as that..
if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them

I have been testing a lot and UW is realy hard to beat. Sin Collector is my new addition to side I always feel that duress isn't a good draw vs control in the mid-late game so I prefer someting to preasure the field. Also, I have left behind Erebos but I'm not sure if he deserves a place in MB or SB due to control MU. Last week i got 9th in a GPT with this very same list but Garys instead of Barons. I feel safer with Barons because of the relevancy of the pro white-black that it offers. Any suggestions. A lot of people keep telling me that 8 white sources it's not enough but in my experience is mure than enough.
I am seeing a trend where people are trying to "improve"on this deck by adding another color or fancy 1-ofs and I have to say that I think it is all a mistake. I have been running this deck since GP ABQ when Owen won and I have made literally 1 chance to the deck and it was the choice of a SB card. The consistency of the deck and overall power levels of the deck make it near perfect for standard. Why do you think Owen has changed at most 2 cards in the deck and 1 is a SB card and 1 is a land?
The only true bad matchup this deck has is the fast Red decks. And even then on the play, if you know how to play it, it is at worst 60-40 them. I have played this deck in 2 PTQs: The first one was in Columbus where I started out 0-2 due to flooding and 1 horrendous misplay on my part. I finished that day going 6-1 and lost my one round to funky mana problems. This past weekend, I went to my 2nd PTQ where I lost a total of 3 games all day and easily, EASILY won the PTQ. I am 14-1-1 with this deck in my last 16 serious tournament matches.
There is no reason to really be changing this deck from what Owen has. I know it is fun to talk about, but if you are serious about winning an event, this is the deck.
I think those G/W decks will be a hard matchup too. Owen did beat it in the finals but it was hard as we saw and there is a guy called Lulz on Magic Online that keeps winning Premier events with a GW deck. I expect that he will make a few changes to the removal suite like having doom blades in the side again. Having a two mana unconditional removal spell for non-black matchups is just too good to pass up.
So how do you sideboard against UW control, Esper control, and WB humans?

Lifebane zombie is just there as another threat and you have so many sub-par cards in your deck against them that you need additional threats. It is mainly there just to harass planeswalkers.
In my opinion, if you aren't playing Mono Black, Mono Blue, or Esper/UW Control, you aren't really trying to win. Both the Esper Human and B/W Human decks seemed so sub-par against me when I played I was wondering what was even going on.

In my opinion, if you aren't playing Mono Black, Mono Blue, or Esper/UW Control, you aren't really trying to win. Both the Esper Human and B/W Human decks seemed so sub-par against me when I played I was wondering what was even going on.
