I stopped playing shortly after AVR came out. When I left, Vexing Devil was about to "change everything", which I'm sure never happened. I sold everything. I want to come back now (my first time doing this, but I gather it happens pretty frequently), I know there have been numerous new sets since.
Give me the abridged version of what I've missed since then, (it wasn't that long ago).
I played U/G Splinterfright. It was awesome for FNM, but I'm pretty sure that deck is long dead?
I'm going to my "first" draft tonight. Thanks for any help!
Unburial rites self mill is still a thing but creatures and spells that are fueled by a full graveyard like splinterfright and spider spawning really aren't. With zombies and snapcaster and undying and flashback and rites still playing big rolls pretty much everyonerunsgraveyardhateintheirsideboard.
Important things from M13 were Farseek as the new omni versatile rampant growth now that it can fetch all the shocklands, Searing Spear is the all purpose burn spell of the moment but a lot of decks still use Pillar of Flame or both, red's ability to reverse loot by discarding then drawing went evergreen, Rancor came back and is as amazing as ever, Arbor Elf is the new mana dork but with shocklands and a few newlandenchants his ability can get you much more, and last but farthest from least is Thragtusk & Thundermaw Hellkite. They pretty much still shape the gold standard for 5 drops you least want to see.
From return to ravnica we got really too much stuff to mention in one post and which of the cards are relevant are changing a lot with gatecrash just coming out. Some that will almost certainly remain relevant are Supreme Verdict as the new face of board sweeping, Deathrite Shaman as a multi format all star, Angel of Serenity is the finisher of choice and the premiere unburial rites target for self mill, Loxodon Smiter is a hell of a brick, Detention Sphere is like oblivion ring +, Ethereal Armor is the basis for a very fast hexproof creatures deck, Sphinx's Revelation is an absurd stabilization play for control decks, there's a new planeswalker and a new Jace, and potent 2 manaremoval slowed down to sorcery speed, or got verynarrow.
Gatecrash is still brand spankin new, there's every shape and color of thread talking about the new cards or what old cards are now more relevant to new decks or how to draft the new limited format. Pick a topic and go to town. Good luck tonight.

"A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: 1. What am I trying to say? 2. What words will express it? 3. What image or idiom will make it clearer? 4. Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: 1. Could I put it more shortly? 2. Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?"

Outstanding, thank you sir! Feels good to be back!
Rest in Peace is also the often gone to GY hate card.
With GTC coming out, there is plenty of room for things to develop. Hopefully, midrange becomes a thing again because this format has been very, very fast.
There's been 3 large sets since avr and phyrexian mana and the titans have rotated out, that's a lot of change.

I'm in the same boat, recently got back into standard since AVR release, and a billion things have changed. Delver no longer exists, control is great now, humans isn't as big of a thing (until Gatecrash hits the scene at least), tokens never really got big, and the 3-color decks... so many 3-color decks. A quick peek at the developing forum and there's a million things going on and plenty of things to like.
GWx and Rx decks seem to be doing the best, but there's no deck that dominates like UW Delver did. That's very good.
Which can entirely be seen by just going to starcitygames and looking at the recent top 8 decks.
And maybe he wanted to know about the devolpment of the metagame since then. I did, I quit at the same time. And never just looking at a SCG top 8's will get you the answers you need.
I did not quit over Vexing devil or any AVR card. Miracles did irk me but I quit due to the terrible community at my LGS.
People based their sources on personal experience (which is limited and nearly useless) to top 8 wins which is also quite limited.
If you really want to get back into the game. You examine which decks are the top performers, proxy them, and then test them out. After finding a deck which are comfortable piloting, you should head to a real tournament and test it out. The best way to learn about standard is to play standard.

MTGS egos at their finest.
Thoughts on proxies:

I can't believe so many idiots thought they were gonna get a 4/3 on Turn 1.
- Thragtusk
Things you don't:
- Titans

If you can't go out of your way to conduct your own research on the current state of standard then you probably shouldn't play competitive magic.
