I was able to play this weekend and did top 8 a fairly local SCG IQ ... decided it is a metagame where including Witchstalker + Ghor-Clan Rampager + Flesh//Blood to try to "get 'em dead" quick is good again:
you might recall I played a similar deck to an 8-2 finish at SCG Columbus; the only card I really missed from the black splash that day was Golgari Charm, and I was prepared to not feel that way again this time by including two main and another in the side
this deck is far from perfect as I haven't even made it to FNM in a couple of weeks, but it was mostly good enough today
Round 1 - Win 2-0 against Selesnya Aggro
Round 2 - Win 2-1 against Selesnya Aggro
recognize Stormbreath Dragon is a good Magic card and also play just enough defense that you're not dead to a flying, double-striking 4/4 or 5/5 if you can help it
Round 3 - Win 2-0 against Golgari Midrange
one of my 'bump into you at most tournaments buddies' (regularly one of the local grinders) draws way too many lands and not enough action two games in a row
Round 4 - Loss 0-2 against Orzhov Midrange
another grinder for this area who I think I've yet to win a match against in three or so tries - I think I might win each game ... at first ... this pilot was undefeated in Swiss and runner-up of event
Round 5 - Win 2-1 against Jund Planeswalkers (Nissa, Worldwaker version)
very close good match-up ... I dabbled in the mash-up of Hoogland's deck and a planeswalkers version a couple weeks ago ... it felt pretty good to be asking the questions instead of trying to find all the answers
Round 6 - Intentional Draw with Selesnya Aggro
I'm the 3rd seed going into the last round and am paired against the other undefeated players ... remain the 3rd seed for top 8
Round 7 - Lost 1-2 against Junk Midrange (similar to Reid Duke's list from a few months ago???)
I lose games two and three - partially due to less than perfect sideboarding and in-game decision making? game 3 is especially intense as I play around Hero's Downfall by playing Chandra, Pyromaster instead of a Stormbreath Dragon to contain a Elspeth, Sun's Champion that had just minus'd, lose Chandra to a Banishing Light, then jam the dragon anyway on the next turn to find out they had the Downfall too - sometimes they just have it all... I made a poor decision early in the game to use a Bow of Nylea to put a counter on a small creature when it gets hit with Golgari Charm during my upkeep - I agonize over it and decide to use it as I may not have anything else to do ... I draw a land and could have suddenly played Chandra a turn earlier which would have sped up the whole game ... it was bait and I shamefully took it - temporary lapse in judgment I'm supposed to be the aggressor here - this player went on to win the entire event, so there's some comfort in that at least
Stormbreath Dragon and Witchstalker were MVPs - because of the match-ups I played against more so than anything ... I shaved Witchstalker a couple times (usually felt guilty and changed it again for game 3) and only missed the trigger a couple times - I remembered it the one time it really really mattered (got me to lethal damage) when a player at 4 life had to use removal during my turn to kill the Satyr token I was going to make
Blood was a solid role player - but I never got to bloodrush GCR into it or fuse both halves ... might be able to shave a copy, but it's sort of the Dreadbore in this version of the list
Golgari Charm was also a solid role player - I didn't run into Supreme Verdict, but I did kill some 1/1s and maybe an enchantment somewhere along the way - I really could've used one against the army of Soldier tokens that killed me in my last match ... might not need a 2nd copy main or a 3rd copy in the sideboard? the fourth Mizzium Mortars might be more useful honestly
Courser of Kruphix + Nylea's Disciple - the life gain package sat on the bench all day ... I didn't play against burn or red based aggro any though there was plenty in the field ... I've even brought these in against monoblue to try to help race in the past, but the bodies just seem to match-up so poorly against Selesnya which was the only deck I played against that is 'faster' than I am
Mistcutter Hydra was also just riding the pine ... whenever I trim a copy. it seems like I play against monoblue or UW/x control and really miss it - today nothing
Soul of Shandalar - almost played one or two of these as a big non-green threat but didn't ... after rotation, this big guy and Reaper of the Wilds could be leaned pretty heavily in a Jund Monsters sort of shell
Polis Crusher - could've played a couple of these instead of the fourth Witchstalker and Ghor-Clan Rampager but didn't
Mutavault - don't have them currently after forcing them into the manabase for a little while ... "Mutavault is the opportunity cost of playing an [aggressive] three color deck" so 2 Mana Confluence provided extra fixing (and I still didn't have the 3rd red for overload on Mizzium Mortars when I got to six mana during that final game - another way it just all fell apart that game)
played a slightly modified version again this weekend in a "win FTV:20" event at the local shop - several of the other really good players in the area where at a PTQ instead so I felt like I had a pretty good shot - the event was going to cut to a top 4 playoff and still managed to attract 30 players
I finished in 8th (too bad it wasn't a cut to top 8) at 3-2 ... both losses were to players who finished in the top 4 (and two of the best regulars not at the PTQ)
wins were against BWR Midrange, BW Midrange, GW Aggro
losses were against Naya Walkers, Rabblemaster
didn't play perfectly
Naya Walkers: game 1 Archangel of Thune eventually gets going, game 2 I misplay a Ruric Thar, the Unbowed into fused Flesh//Blood ... I exile a Stormbreath Dragon to get Ruric Thar to 10/10 but decide to kill a planeswalker with the 10 damage instead of hitting the opponent ... I end up locked out of the game when I draw multiple noncreature spells that I can't cast but leave opponent with enough life to play a Xenagos, the Reveler that can create infinite chump blockers until they find an Archangel of Thune again into a Chandra, Pyromaster to navigate around the vigilance/reach dude and finish me off with one shot ... I should've been able to force a game 3 here but goofed ... haven't played enough Ruric Thar lately apparently
Rabblemaster: game 1 I announce that I will be a gentleman and keep a so-so hand that probably can't beat some sort of aggressive red deck (we all know what each other tend to play) - game 2 I do what I'm supposed to after sideboarding out a bunch of big expensive nasties for the life-gain package and extra Mizzium Mortars - game 3 I decide to mainphase a Golgari Charm on my turn 2 to kill two weenies instead of being greedy and seeing if he would play another x/1 to avoid pump being able to save them ... spoiler his next play is Goblin Rabblemaster comes down ... I counter with a Scavenging Ooze that immediately grows to a 3/3 from one of the creatures I got with the charm ... he untaps and burns the Scooze out with a Stoke the Flames ... I draw two more Ghor-Clan Rampager to go with the one from my opening hand before I draw a fourth land so game-over
I would say the Golgari Charm decision wasn't as bad as the Flesh//Blood one but still
might need 2 Anger of the Gods (instead of the 4th Mizzium Mortars and something else) in the sideboard but need more repetitions against the latest iteratio of monored to be sure???
The main deck Vraska was an absolute All-star especially with the addition of Genesis Hydra. Vraska is probably the best planeswalker in the deck because she is universal in every match up. She's also another answer to Desecration Demon and my only main deck answer to Master of Waves besides Polukranos. Genesis Hydra was a last minute addition the FNM before but after I went undefeated that night I bumped up the Hydra to a 2-of and it was the best decision I made. The fact it puts planeswalkers and Stormbreath into play uncounterably is not to be underestimated. I decided Ghor-Clan was very bad coming into this tournament because how terrible it is versus Black decks, but also it's impact on the game is very low. I decided to play Genesis Hydra in their place and it didn't disappoint.
CVM had wanted to test this for the Invitational but ended up playing Jund Planeswalkers instead - unhappy with the results, he claims to just have went for it with Rabblemaster in the Open
Also, Stephen Mann took this variation to a 7-1 finish in the Standard portion of the Invitational ...
in less important news for most of you, I tweaked my Witchstalker version to be better against Rabblemaster (hopefully) and took it to a 3-1 finsih - lost to Monoblack
wasn't planning to play in a nearby SCG IQ this weekend, but it worked out ... so I headed out at the next to last minute with my latest tweaked version
considered changing Witchstalker to Goblin Rabblemaster but decided to keep the card that dodges removal instead of the card that leaves a 1/1 (or potentially) behind when it gets removed - CVM is better than me so I'd recommend most of you follow his lead ... I also reworked the mana to support 2 Mutavault back in the deck and a couple more black cards returning to the sideboard (Putrefy and Rakdos's Return) ... was expecting to see a lot of Rabblemaster aggro and midrange (spoiler: I was wrong) - liked Flames of the Firebrand enough to cut the life-gain (extra Courser of Kruphix and Nylea's Disciple) that does next to nothing except against burn or hyper-aggro
I dropped at 1-2 after facing UWx control three rounds in a row ... was frustrating as it's traditionally a pretty good match up
Round 1/3 - UW Control (one traditional version, one Planar Cleansing version)
both matches go about the same
game 1s - I put on a lot of pressure but with slow hands; they eventually stabilize and I scoop to Sphinx Revelation for bunches to save time for possible game 3s
game 2s - I mulligan to five due to mana as opposed to being super greedy ... the fives are both pretty amazing for fives, but I don't quite get there - losing to an unchecked Archangel of Thune in one and Jace, Memory Adept in the other
Round 2 - UWR control
I do exactly what I'm supposed to and kill him pretty fast as he's playing mostly Temples for the first few turns of the game
probably just going to hang this one up ... might play something with Burning-Tree Emissary again for fun the last few weeks
Sideboard would include extra copies of a few cards, a playset of Lightning Strike, probably 2-3 Mistcutter Hydra, and then some random respect for the predicted metagame (Rabblemaster and lots of other midrange???)
While there are no direct replacements for Domri Rade,Ghor-Clan Rampager, and Mizzium Mortars, I feel all right about this as a first draft when a lot of other people are completely starting over - I might just miss trample most of all with this version though (was even considering some number of Polis Crusher in the SB)
im currently working on jund monster post rotation as i believe it could be better than BUG monster lists that have seem to become popular. Murderous cut, thoughtseize, despise, hero's downfall all are super powerful cards and are not to be dismissed. I feel arc lightning is an auto-include in the sideboard.
the one card im not sure about is anger of the gods. it is surely an amazing sideboard card, but could it be a main board card replacement for mizzium mortars. Mortars and Ghor-clan rampager are the two cards that seem impossible to replace post-rotation. Im thinking mainboard anger of the gods and maybe a nylea god could be suitable.
im also loving boon sayr in testing.
