I'm watching Pro Tour - Gatecrash and heard a mention of Gerry Thompson piloting a deck with Harvest Pyre and Boros Reckoner. Does anyone have an idea what all he is running in this list?
It's a good, sound strategy that people aren't expecting. I'm still experimenting with a Naya deck that includes Boros Reckoner, ways to make him indestructible (Boros Charm and/or Frontline Medic battalion) then using Blasphemous Act as either a 1-2HKO or a 1-sided field-wipe without splashing blue for Supreme Verdict.
Dump a bunch of creatures, pyre my own reckoner, aim at player for GGs? Doesn't seem that great.
The Pyre is only a 1-of so it's not like he's relying solely on that interaction. It's just something that can let him win out of nowhere while still being useful as a removal spell.
LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
The sideboard was 3 Jace, Memory Adept, 2 Dispel, 2 Negate, 2 Essence Scatter, 1 Planar Cleansing, 2 Oblivion Ring, 2 Rhox Faithemender, 1 Grafdigger's Cage?! I might be off by a card or two, though.

As they commented in a feature, Gerry T believe it's the detail cards that define a deck, not the core. So in this case, it's definitely worth noticing that single Harvest Pyre. How many people do you think were totally blown out by it during the swiss part of the event? I imagine it was many. Great innovation.
It is exiled after you cast it once, I figure it would be more accurate to say that there are two.
Three Snapcasters give you better odds of drawing it. You might only be able to cast it twice, but you'll likely be in good shape to do given the Thought Scours and the insane card draw off of Sphinx's Revelation. Now that it is a known quantity it won't be so ridiculous, but it can still beat a player that can't answer it.
Considering the only guild that is set to remove boros reckoner favorably is Golgari (redirect targets that just come back, and Abrupt Decay) someone should have graveyard removal, and that deck can side it in against tech like Harvest Pyre.

The red mage lives by the variance and dies by the variance. May the variance be with you, always.

Graveyard removal is so bad against the deck as a whole it's not funny
You literally only turn off 3 snapcaster, pyre and think twice flashback, that's it. If the 1 Harvest Pyre makes my opponent sideboard in 3/4 graveyard hate cards every time then sign me up.
video tl;dr is that he is using it as a "better runechanters pike" that "Randomly kills you like pike, but pike is sooooooo bad to draw early. Pyre can kill small dudes early, or thundermaws if needed"
I get it, and it doesn't seem to be a bad draw early game. I just get disgusted by decks designed to draw out the game as long as possible until you can Harvest Pyre or Psychic Spiral your opponent for game.
It doesn't feel like a fight, it feels like a trump card.
This is why I play aggro.

Harvest Pyre isn't actually "cute". It's just a replacement for rune-chanter's pike. Pike was a one-of that could deal huge amounts of damage in a long game. Harvest pyre is a one-of that fills a similar role while being good when drawn early against agro as opposed to terrible like Pike was.

You notice it when it kills you big boy.
There's 3 snapcasters, so actually there's 4 Pyers.

Why would you ever need to cast it more than twice?
