One thing I've seen repeatedly in the main thread is that people have been underimpressed with Scavenging Ooze. What are some good replacements? Does Boon Satyr provide enough utility/devotion to be a good swap?
It's pretty consistently a 4/4 or bigger on the third turn, which makes a decent roadblock vs aggro.
The thing about the ooze is that it falls into the 'fatties' part of the deck, but it's just not fat enough to actually be a threat when you're firing off Garruk every turn..
I played naya midrange to second place at states. I am a firm believer that two scooze is the correct number in a green midrange shell. He can be absolutely bonkers at times.
I like him in Gr Devotion. I do not like him in Gr Monsters.
He fits akwardly into that decks curve imo. He is a 2 drop that generally does not want to come out turn 2. He is great around turn 5 when he can grow and he is an amazing top deck late game. But thats his problem. Early game where he is a part of the curve he is just a bear.
I've been a big fan of Kalonian Tusker over scooze myself, and that could transpose over to the Gr devotion as well since tusker gives 2 himself.
Every single list I see a pro put out that is GR monsters have scooze in it.
Are we missing something. Are we undervalueing him that much?
I feel like we are just missing something all together.
I think it is the best 2-drop creature, grows and gives slight defense through life gain. For what is worth, it is still a huge threat when it hits the board.

From the people I've talked to (tweeted to some of the pros running the RG Monsters as well) they say basically it's never a bad top deck, it will always be a threat that can get out of hand if there is no way for the opponent to deal with it, and the incidental life gain can be significant especially in some of the more aggressive matchups. Plus the upside of being able to hate on graveyard if they try to whip things etc is pretty impactful as well.
My thing is I try not to look at it like a 2 drop, I try to look at it like a 4-5 drop in terms of when I would want to play it. I think it's fine if you think of it like that, but don't try and use it to fill the curve at 2.
When it's bad, it's never that bad. When it's good, it can be very good. And multiple copies cannibalize each other. But of course this deck has a wealth of other options at its disposal for this slot.
So I think there's a strong case to be made for either one copy or zero copies, but not any other number.

while 1 copy in play may be best, multiple copies in deck will increase the 1 copy in play occurrence

But having more than one in the deck will increase the occurrence of drawing multiple copies by infinite percent.
I'm okay with not drawing a Scavenging Ooze every single game. But games can definitely be lost by drawing the second Ooze instead of a different card.
Scooze neither good nor bad in a deck list. His ability useful against Whip of Erebos, Chandra's Phoenix or Obzedat if somehow able to kill it at instant speed.
