so shortly after zendikar was released i started running white weenie at my local fnms. i had amazing success with it, either winning the whole thing or placing 2-4 out of 25+ people each week. with worldwake i think the deck got better and i switched to the equipment build. once again i had incredible success for about 3 weeks.
then, people started playing more boss naya and allies. i started to struggle a little bit, but still typically went at least 3-2. throughout the weeks i had changed the decklist slightly trying out a variety of things. the deck still felt competetive and i still had a blast playing it, its just so much fun.
then i had back to back weeks where i just completely scrubbed out goin 1-4 both times. i shrugged it off and chalked it up to the odds. obviously its to be expected, you cant win em all. but regardless i decided to try something else out and went back to the dark side and played jund for the past 2 weeks.
anway, i have rambled on enough, and i apologize. my point of the post is this...
i really want to go back and play white weenie adding gideon jura and student of warfare. i think both cards are amazing. but, it just seems like right now, white weenie is probably in a really bad spot, what with some of the new removal. especially consume the meek. to those of you who have played WW since rise came out, how do you feel the deck stands on a pro tour level? is it still competetive? or does it just get beat out by all the new stuff, mixed with old.
i feel like we cant just go the haterade route anymore with firewalker maindeck. i also feel like the equipment build has probably outlived its usefullness. when i had alot of success i was running 18-20 lands, honor of the pure and ajani goldmane. just tryin to swarm the opponent.
so basically...is white weenie still gonna be any good?
It's definitely still a good deck, I think we have to get the various themes to mix together a little bit though. I think mixing the swarming with the equipment is the way to go. The pro-bears are what makes the deck win in the current environment, maybe if U/W overtakes Jund enough where the meta shifts we can alter up the main decked creature content, but as long as Red and Black are popular colors at tournaments, a sigil of distinction on a white knight will be an almost unstoppable force.
At the same time I think we can't all in anymore, cards like consuming vapors and consume the meek are really difficult to deal with if we have too little or too much board commitment and I've found them pretty devastating when sided in by Jund, their post sideboard game against us has gotten nearly impossible with all the removal and answers they can bring in. We need to find a solid balance, and we need to provide ourselves with some more late game solutions. Things like Baneslayer Angel and Wall of reverence or some other later game cards to put an immediate threat out. Late game it just gets weaker having to drop a small guy and equip it up to face down a Jund style or Naya style late game.
I really think the days of all in swarming WW are past the question we have to ask now is how we can respond to the numerous removal threats. I'm doing some last minute testing of various combinations of BtE, Emerge Unscathed, and cards like that which can help us to fight off removal and keep the damage race up.
The more and more I playtest against Jund the more I feel that a modified Wescoe equipment style deck is the one that has the most potential, but something with a few more tricks and maybe some late game added in.
As someone who is no more than a casual online player, the equipment theme remains a necessity so long as a Collared First Striker on defense is the only thing preventing WW from getting flat-out run over by a Sledged-up KotR, Scute Mob, or your favorite other superior creature in Naya / Bant / Junk (if the latter is still considered relevant). The equipment package is also a boon against Vampires, where loading up a White Knight and sitting back a couple sac-chumps lets you race Bloodwitch a lot easier than with a plain 2/2 WK, and gives you more ways to swing through walls in control matchups.
