pithing needle used to be the card. Now it seems to get no love. What are the best pithing needle targets (in standard) to call? Does any one have some epic win pithing needle stories?
Targets I've thought of
planeswalkers
fetch lands (could potentially seriously damage boros. has anyone tested this?) luminarch ascension

I was running BloodQuake in a tournament against Jacerator. Game 1 went terribly for my opponent - his mill gave me Bloodghasts and Hellsparks, his card drawing handed me burn, and before I'd hit the halfway point on my library he was dead. Game 2 I could see the wheels turning. He went, dropped an Island. On my turn I went "Swamp, Pithing Needle - Jace".
My opponent tried not to give it away, but he couldn't hide his "oh... crap" realization. I found out after the game, he'd only kept his starting hand because it had Jace. His plan was to skip the usual Howling Mine route, and instead mill the old fashioned way... too late.
I played my 56 land 4 Pithing Needle deck in a sanctioned event. I went turn 1 Needle naming Baneslayer and my opponent simply conceded because of the sheer intimidation factor. Winning games the easy way, kids. Just remember to mulligan aggressively.

But, that is considered cheating, since you caused him to concede with misinformation. Pithing Needle naming Baneslayer Angel does absolutley nothing.

Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.

How do you figure? He didn't tell his opponent that his Baneslayers in hand were worthless, or something crazy like that. Sounds like this new upstart rogue deck could give herbal poultice.dec some actual competition.

He's under no obligation to inform his opponent that Pithing Needle does not prevent Baneslayer Angel from being cast. It is against the rules to tell your opponent the incorrect functionality, however unless they ask (or the card requires their interaction - i.e. Master of the Wild Hunt) you're not required to inform them of how cards in your deck function. I'm going out on a limb here, but I can't imagine either player in this scenario advancing far in a tournament - wasting a Pithing Needle? Dumb move. Not grasping the concept of "activated ability"? Obviously not a PT level player.
I'm more concerned with this move because I suspect this usage of Pithing Needle was in a more 'friendly' setting (FNM at the local card shop, that type of thing) where you should really be informing new players of how cards work and getting people into the game. We've got Terminate, Deathmark, Path to Exile, Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring, Slave of Bolas, etc... for dealing with Baneslayer... confusing your opponent is just the wrong way to go about it at any less-competitive event.

I have to agree with you. What I really hate is that he was misinforming a new player, and creating hostilities. I bet his opponent wasn't too warm to him after he learned it didn't work that way!

if baneslayer was his win con he was probably a noob.
although he didn't have to tell him I think we as experienced players should help create better players out of others. Think about it if we tell them that you can get away with "misinformation" then won't they do they same to others as well? I wanna play a card game where everyone can have fun and tell the truth.

Wow you guys are just getting wtf TROLLED by this post. Hilarious.
It's good against so many things in the Nissa Monument decks it's not even funny, but yeah, in general planeswalkers are primary targets. It's always nice to have it in my board though. It just gives me that extra insurance in case I run into some wierd combo, etc...
Ok, let me get this out of the way so that I'm still on topic.
Pithing Needle could be Main Deck material considering it actually hits alot of key cards so it can cause major "Meta Splash Damage," if you know what I mean.
A few cards I can think of off the top of my head.
1) Putrid Leech
2) Master of the Wild Hunt
3) Garruk Wildspeaker
4) Hellspark Elemental, Hell's Thunder, Unearth, etc...
5) All 5 New Fetches
6) Jace
7) Sorin Markov
8) All 5 Non-Legendary Rare Lands (Oran Rief, Emeria, etc...)
9) Siege Gang Commander
10) Nissa Revane
11) Elspeth
12) Too many more to name....
Well the list speaks for itself I can't honestly think of a good deck that this wouldn't hurt.
Now, I can't believe you fools would actually believe someone would play a 4 Pithing Needle 56 Land deck.... let alone go on some silly holy crusade of a rant about the moral issues at hand if his story were true.

This. Regardless of whether or not this was a troll, You automatically assume he cheated or that his opponent was a new player. for all you know, the conversation went something like this:
goatrevolt: I play Pithing needle calling Baneslayer
Player B: (Groan) I scoop.
A lot of people that started playing magic after kamigawa dont really know what pithing needle does just cuz, unlike kamigawa days, no one bothers playing it main deck and even then, quite a few decks dont even bother running it Sb.
Edit: might as well ask a question regarding exalted. Exalted isnt an activated ability, is it?
The people that play legacy / vintage always amuse me. They want their formats to be represented more. They want more tournaments. But when anyone suggests allowing more people access to the formats by reprinting cards, the same people start screaming about the reprint policy.
Edit: might as well ask a question regarding exalted. Exalted isnt an activated ability, is it?
An activated ability is anything with a colon :. For example -
"4: Draw a card"
The colon divides the activation cost from the ability it activates. Exalted is a triggered ability, which are denoted by "when ____________ do __________" without colons. When using Pithing Needle, just look for the colon and you'll know you've got a valid target.

or Crypt of Agadeem for that matter (mana abilility). And since no one plays Magosi, the only actual relevant card here is Oran-Rief

I don't like Needle in this Standard. I find myself wanting my sideboard slots for better cards.
