I feel that Sorin is more of a bomb, I win card than Lilliana so i feel he is necessary.
I ran Lilliana Vess on the last FNM and she got the job done right. Haven't tested Sorin yet though so my two cents on this is that Lilliana works well with this deck.
Still want to get some Sorin's to test them out :S

Every time I dropped Liliana I did it to search for either sorin or a bloodwitch, so I eventually did what I should have done in the first place, I put in another bloodwitch and dropped Liliana. lol
liliana proivides great utility for this deck. Unless u ran a diabolic tutor in her place, I'd be playing at least 1 of her. Heres the build I've been testing:
Standard : BR Zombies Modern :
- Playing : Burn | Living End | Bant Eldrazi
- In Queue : ???
- Building : Death's Shadow |
- Sidelined : RUG Scapeshift | Lantern Control | GR Tron | Ad Nauseam | UWR Control | Dredge | Eldrazi Tron | UB Whir Tezzerator
I'm playing with both liliana and sorin and I find both of them amazing
liliana is mainly used to set up your next draws, her first ability is also good against decks that play jace (or even howling mines), even after a mind sludge
sorin is also really strong as it plays as removal, win condition and also helps disfigures that maybe in lategame seem to become less important
what I do not understand is why consume spirit is so good... I never needed it and it seems to me that as a removal is much worse than tendrils, as a finisher it's too small and as a wild card is not good enough in any of the above mentioned roles... even as a planeswalker killer we already have hexmage that looks stronger to me (even against luminarch ascension...)

Hm, maybe because when you draw it in a late game, you can deal last 6-8 damage to your oponent?
well... I always felt that when I'm at that point of the game, one of two things happened: either I lost or I'm in total control and I do not need to burn my opponent (because I have a bloodwitch or sorin usually)
I just prefer to use that slot for something else that helps me gaining control of the game rather than having more win conditions (and it is still a "partial" win condition since it just helps you win faster)

How necessary is Gargoyle Castle? It never seemed like that good of a card to me. Is it just there for Grim Discovery hijinks? Does the Castle help that much?
How necessary is Gargoyle Castle? It never seemed like that good of a card to me. Is it just there for Grim Discovery hijinks? Does the Castle help that much?
I've won games that would have otherwise been completely stalled out without it. Gargoyle Castle blocks white knight and has evasion, two things that are both very valuable to the deck.
Between QftG I don't feel its good enough, because it sucks to topdeck lategame, same for bloodchief ascencion, so i wouldn't run either, but that may just be my opinion..
I keep hearing this about the black quests, and honestly I just never understood the argument.
QftG and Bloodchief Ascension both cost one mana.
Most one mana spells are designed to be good in the early game, not so much the late game. That's why they cost one mana, right? So you can drop them as early as possible?
If it's late game and I'm topdecking, I don't know of any one-mana spells I'd want to rip-- I'd pretty much always rather have a big expensive spell like Sorin or Marsh Casualties. But that doesn't make Ascension or QftG bad cards, does it?
I played versus 2x Mono-Black Vampire, 1x Naya Zoo, 1x U/W Mill, 1x U/W Control and 1x Jund/cascade. My loss was to one of the mono black vampires, whereas I kept a third game opener (on the draw) of Swamp-Swamp-Tendrils-Tendrils-Distress-Sign in Blood-Gatekeeper and missed my third land drop. The matchup vs U/W control is a total blowout (turn 6 duress + sludge = win), and aggro doesn't like you very much.
The random Nightmare is there as I didn't have a 2nd Sorin or Bloodwitch, and there he will stay. That guy is a house against vampires, they have no way to remove it if you have another guy in play. You always have more land than them, so tendrils from them is never good enough. He also draws the "WTF is that?:o" looks that I love so much.
Sorin Markov was a blowout every time I played him, and I would consider cutting either the echoes or tutor to run a 2nd copy. I did like having a virtual fifth copy of tendrils (Diabolic Tutor) in the deck, that could transmute into bloodwitch if needed.
The sideboard is a bit janky, and could use some work. I really like the Cemetary Reapers against Vamps (a big part of my metagame), as he removes Bloodghast, and is never short of fuel. He's basically Call of the Herd every turn, the rest is obvious.
It's a work in progress, but definitely happy with the results. Anxious to test a bit more versus the field (cruel control?), but if the meta shapes up to be as aggro as it seems to be, this could be a very solid choice. I haven't tested versus the R/W deck, but it seems like you would just wreck them.
Hmm... how did the TO feel about you playing 4 Distress and 4 Tendrils of Despair that aren't in Type 2? Tendrils of Despair is obviously Tendrils of Corruption, but what is Distress if you also have Duress in there?

Hmm... how did the TO feel about you playing 4 Distress and 4 Tendrils of Despair that aren't in Type 2? Tendrils of Despair is obviously Tendrils of Corruption, but what is Distress if you also have Duress in there?
Fixed, just got back into Magic so was typing them from memory.
I've built, built and re-built this deck on the beta. I took this to a 14 man standard tourney yesterday and when 3-0-1 in the swiss 6-0 in games. Then lost to mono white control 2-1. Mull'd to 5 the 1st game I lost kept a 3 lander and got stuck on 3 lands.
The card that i see mostly no one playing is consume spirit. I think that card is an absolute must in the MD. This deck has problems with reach. Consume spirit is the reach you need in the late game...it's a must against Jund Aggro which is the new faeries...in case you haven't seen the SCG top 16 yet. 14 Aggro lists and like 6 of them are straight jund aggro. 6 blue cards in the entire top 16...there needs to be a control deck and I think this is the best one...
Splashing white gives you access to Brave the Elements" target="blank">Brave the Elements, which would help a lot versus red strategies and as an alpha strike move. Even as sideboard, I think you'd find yourself happy with it.
How about something like this? Tendrils is slightly weaker here, But grim discovery+7 fetches and removal magnets should still give you strong board postion. This also ensures you're not locked down by a randomly fast Iona.
sculler doesn't really do anything in that matchup.. i feel that a mono colored version is best.
Unless you were willing to try a red splash via Armillary sphere and grixis panorama, run 2 mountains.. and the red cards are blightning terminate and burst lightning/Lightning bolt..
Doom blade unfortunately needs to be a SB card IMO if you run consumes
Consume/tendrils/Disfigure can all deal with black creatures AKA thrinax/leech from jund and everything from vamps.
Also, you have too many finishers
cut bloodwitch to 3 and drop lilliana.. IMO she's not worth it, just put in the cards you're most likely going to tutor for...
As for sb... i would find a way to throw in ... ready.....
Executioners Capsule.
If anything with Iona gets big... you want to have an answer.
I don't think disfigure is nearly as good as you think. Your example is for Jund to kill Thrinax and Putrid Leech...um...disfigure doesn't kill either of those creatures. Not sure who your playing against but if I'm playing jund I don't lose my Putrid Leech to your Disfigure. And in that matchup Doomblade is better IMO i can hit bloodbraid just like you can with your disfigure and on top of that I can nail the red dragon token off of broodmate.
However, it is better against vamps, but doom blade is better against EVERY other deck that exists. I'll stick with my doom blades...you go ahead and try to take down your thrinaxes, leeches, broodmate tokens, Rampaging Baloths, Wild Nactl's, Baneslayer Angels, Sphinx of Lost Truths with your disfigures...
I've liked liliana everytime I've drew her; however, I could see making her a 3rd Markov. Markov is soooo awesome. I'm never sad to see it.
I have no idea how you think my deck has to many finishers. That I just completely disagree with. I wish I had some more finishers. The reach in this deck as previously stated is just not very good. People are running answers to bloodwitch and she hasn't been getting there for me. I may actually try Ob Nixilis.
Executioner's Capsule is cute however if you lose to Iona I think your just a bad player. It's such an easy deck to beat. You just keep killing there accelerators. I'd rather have sadistic sacrament in the board for that deck if your worried about it. Just remove the 3 iona's from the game. Capsule's not a practical sideboard card. SCG top 16 featured 0 iona decks...if it's prominent in your meta by all means go for it...
Splashing white gives you access to Brave the Elements" target="blank">Brave the Elements, which would help a lot versus red strategies and as an alpha strike move. Even as sideboard, I think you'd find yourself happy with it.
You have a problem with red decks? Really...no way. I don't see how this deck ever loses to red. We have Tendrils, Consume Spirit, Removal for the aggro creatures, even nighthawk is decent in that matchup, they have a tough time with sorin and bloodwitch...red is a great matchup definitely not a need to move into white for a sb card in Brave the Elements. What are you even trying to protect with Brave...we only play 12 creatures...
I think BW is practical but then you use a strong discard package with scullers, duress and the works to protect baneslayer angel. But I don't think that's worth it at all since baneslayer is dropping fast in value imo. Everyone has answers for that card now int here md. Jund aggro crushed baneslayer all day long at Saturday's 5k and that's the deck to beat right now.
The SCG top 16 DID have an iona deck... it was called Mono White control
I agree that this matchup is easy but if they get to 9 lands with emeria active no matter what you do you can't even buy one turn.
Haunting echoes is better than sacrament 24.7 IMO
And you're right about disfigure not answering these cards but if thats how you feel they can always double them up..
Consume also doubles as removal to remove some cards like broodmate and you're bound to have tendrils
If you're running infest main disfigure looks even better.. Ill disfigure your broodmate then infest. (assuming you have dealt with one of their dragons already) your guys chump block thrinax tokens so you're not worried about them and you also have infest
HOWEVER disfigure DOES answer putrid leech, you swing i say effects you pump i kill in response, having them even thinking this is a possibility you essentially have remova a card in hand from the game, gain 2 life per turn during your opponents combat step.
That is why i advocate disfigure over doom blade
Consume+Sorin will finish the game for you 99% of the time, the bloodwitches inability to get there is irrelevant.
The fact that she mini drains and you can almost always get in some beats with nighthawk/hexmages you can get them low enough to capitalize.
If they're running MOST of the cards you implied though in your disfigure argument they're playing control
You rape control through Discard and Powerful life gaining removal IE tendrils/consume.
Also your disfigure statement, you can hit bloodbraid with doom blade.... I can do the same for one mana less and hit bloodbraid just as easilly
@doomdg: I don't think the expanses are necessary, but Gargoyle Castle is something I'm still toying with - I'm not currently convinced that it works well at the same time as the white splash however (I want to be able to hit Gatekeeper no later than turn 4, which means no more than 1 non-black land) and may disrupt Nighthawk if there. My first build had them & I was unhappy with the number of the times I looked at two non-black lands in the opener, hence cutting them. Note that Scullers can grab Iona as well so there is a slight gain there.
However, I haven't tried the Grim Discovery inclusion; the main issue I have is being dead to larger creatures without the straight removal of Doom Blade or Path to Exile. As always - it's testing time!
I'm still testing a mono black version, that previous list was off the top of my head. The grim discovery engine thins your deck out significantly without missing land drops, although I hesitate to run more than 6 fetches.. I never had problems with big creatures, between the whole slew of sacrifice effects and targeted removal they nothing really survives.(Except bloodghast+Nightmare..lol)
One interesting S/B tech for the white splash is safe passage. When your opponent FINALLY has a black card on the top of his deck for that nocturnus.
I'll post up a list later(have an exam tmr) once I get the time.
I've been testing a little with Vampire Nighthawk- I like him a lot- but I don't like that he competes with my Gatekeeper and Infest at 3cc-Disfigure is pretty useful, though Doom Blade still does it for me most of the time.
I have to say I totally disagree about Iona only beating MBC players- MWC matchup is going to be a slow for us, meaning that they're going to have an easy time working up the mana to cast their Iona. Without Sadistic Sacrament, its just a matter of time.
I'm also going to bat for Consume Spirit one more time- I really think it fills a necessary hole for our deck- it's a way to bring down our opponent at the end of the game- or bring down pesky creatures or planeswalkers. Is it the best at any of those things? Not even close- but it can do ALL of those things- it's a really versatile card, and I've never been unhappy to see it.
For those using Sorin- has he been useful mostly as removal or as a win-con?
Sorin has been great for me. He requires a ton of attention to remove aside from Vampire Hexmage, and you can honestly just use his +2 every turn and not even bother with his other two abilities. Typically, though, I will use his Mindslaver once I'm up to 10+ loyalty and have some form of board presence, as tapping them out or making them waste removal on their own creatures helps to make sure that the turn after I can seal the win.
I ran Lilliana Vess on the last FNM and she got the job done right. Haven't tested Sorin yet though so my two cents on this is that Lilliana works well with this deck.
