Kiss of the Amesha is a good card. It is highly underrated in a format with mediocre draw in the first place. Divination? Reckless Scholar? Jace Beleran and courier's capsule are the only quality draw in standard at the moment without a black splash for something like Esper Charm. Kiss is probably runner up.
everyone in the top 8 was terrible except ron, rick, and chris. play mistakes all around. they were really really bad, and for the most part you can just ignore these lists. this event was less like a PTQ and more like a big FNM. the guy who won was REALLLLLY bad, i would know because he sometimes plays FNM at my store and can't even win there. he just got very lucky that day.
i'm not trashing anyone, i'm simply stating the truth - they were mostly pretty bad players and just saying that you shouldn't really take stock in these lists.
worlds just happened a couple of days ago, why aren't you paying attention to that?
I think you have a very skewed understanding of the word "truth". What you are describing as truth is only your opinion. You need facts to back up what you think the truth is. The FACT is that someone who you percieve as bad placed in the top 8 at an event that you didn't play in. The event WASN'T a FNM. Maybe you're better than he is, maybe you're not, but its not truth, or fact that these players are bad. It's your opinion, end of story.
Also, just curious, but if you're so good why didn't you participate?

Also, my list was based off the worlds list but TBH i threw it together that morning so the numbers may be off.

Rather easy to call ppl out and say how bad everyone but you is I suppose, after all your too much of an awesome player to EVER make a mistake or 2 after playing for 10 hours.
Maybe luck was involved, maybe not. But from everything Ive heard and read about the event the only one who thinks everyone there was a "REALLLLLY bad" player is you, my guess is you can't win yourself so you trash talk about those that do.
Congratulations to everyone in the top 8, despite what 1 bitter observer thinks, you all did well.

Love your logic. I played at your fnm 4-5 random times with different decks without knowing your meta and I split in the finals twice, neither time it was with you, do you just watch others play ?
Now I win at my local FNM 95% of the time, does it make me a better player ? You're welcome to come to my store and prove you're such a pro...
Anyways, it was a well ran tournament and my deck ran pretty well. Playing 5x jund, naya, jacerator, 2x bushwacker, 4c cascade, uw control. I lost 5th round to Jund, beating it later in the semis.

I wasn't at that event, but I can report from PTQs in the Orlando area that bad players can win them. I remember the guy that Top 8ed in a Lor/Shards standard event this year told his opponent on 2 different occasions that filter lands count tap for one of each, only 2 of either or. Bad players can get lucky in any format, but I think this observer might have been a little bit over critical.
Also: I dunno if I would call the UW deck a control deck, seems more rockish to me. Midrange/Control still is an interesting take on the colors.

lol.
Yeah i know why you split in finals twice.
A)
It's not that hard to top8 at our store. Some kid with Aspurgers does it monthly.
B)
The guy you split in finals with TWICE just wanted to go eat.
But if you WANT us to drop down there sometime I'll be GLAD to do so just to shut you up
Why don't you recount the finals for us alex.
Because if i remember it it was just goldfishing on your part.
PS: you SHOULD board out archdruids vs jund. At least all the good players do
Kevin jonas DID punt game 3 about 10 times against you.
Jund guy with ob nixilis never drew the god awful card game one and promptly boraded them out games 2 and 3.
bad players are allowed to win.
Thats how this game works.

You forget the part that the vast majority of people on MTGS suck at magic. The vast majority also didn't go, and most of them didn't bother to post about it. Those that did probably can't recognize a bad play.
Oh, and FYI I can at least top 8 a PTQ and qualify for Nats so ... yeah. I'm not saying that's great but probably better than most of the people at the tournament, and most of the people on MTGS can do.
I'm talking trash because these players don't deserve to win. Lachmann or Rick should have taken the whole thing but awful players are rewarded for terrible plays and lucksaccery.
In addition the quality of the players at that event was significantly lower than that of your typical PTQ.
I know for a fact that the Elf player is awful; who in their right mind doesn't board out Archdruids vs. Jund? A lot of his play decision were shaky as hell too. Don't even try to say that you won because you're good - we both know what happened in game 3 of the finals.

So is this where you get your crew, and he gets his crew and you have this massive west side story-esque showdown? Seriously though, did he sleep with your mother or something? Or are you just the type of person who likes to talk **** online where your anonymous? Or maybe you secretly love him and cant stand the fact that he doesnt come to your store more often?
He won, you and your firends didnt even play (or didnt make top 8) let it go and keep this thread about discussion of the decks rather then attacking a player you obviously have something against.

Actually our buddy Rick made second and lost because Alex is a lucksac and Rick mulled to 5. Also I never said I was amazing. Everyone just sucks. I suck too - I just suck less than most people here.

I think he was trying to say that its a luck-based, aggro format, not that all aggro is luck based, but that cascade is luck based and aggro makes up a vast majority of the meta. I think that is what he is trying to say, it not then he is a moron.

From the last few posts these groupies of Rick have made imo its the latter.

I didn't play. I was lazy and woke up at noon.
I talk **** about everyone in person and online. You're an idiot.
I actually like the deck.
I think oracles a fine card to play.
But that doesn't excuse poor play and getting lucky.
For someone calling me out as an online warrior you sure seem to be one yourself buddy.

I appreciate everyone who went; please, let's keep it civil. There were players there who have won a Grand Prix and there were players where this was their first "competitive" event playing on Saturday. However the cards came up and whatever plays people did or didn't make, everyone came out and had fun. In the end, that's what matters. Not everyone is the next Jon Finkel, there really isn't anything to be gained by continuing to criticize other players. I really wanted this thread to be for discussing decklists, card choices, and to provide feedback about the event.
Thanks again to all who attended, don't worry, the next one is already being planned (3-man teams anyone?)

I dont recall calling you an online warrior, "warrior" doesn't really describe someone who is living vicariously through a friend. Leach would be more appropriate. Talentless hack perhaps?
Regardless, talking trash about a player while not playing is just stupid. And swarming the boards with friends while insulting everyone is a fantastic way of showing your own childish demenear, and that of your friends.
Rick, if your even here, I'm sure your a good player, but you might want to keep your friends in check before they trash your rep like they did their own.

I think he came here to be critical of the finals and both of the guys that were being negative seems to just come in to give the warning that in their eyes the Top8 shouldn't be giving too much credit because of bad luck on account of players having to mull 4-5. Granted that it is part of the game, when it happens that badly in the top8 it can distort outside observation on how good decks did.
If you going to tell him he can't be critical of someones playing, or telling him he can't tell people that he lucked out, then you aren't much better than his trash talking. Lets be fair.

I dont even hate the guy.
I'm happy my friend made top8. It was his 1st and it was very well deserved.
Luck is part of the game. It's as simple as that.
So when the elf deck, completely unprepared for the jund decks wins. People should realize he got lucky, not that he was in any way shape or form the best dec from that top8. People like to make assumptions based on that shiny "1". They shouldn't or it will be their downfall.
And what makes you so much better for talking back? Does it make you a better person? How are you not childish? Last time i checked, claiming to know you're right despite not knowing anything about the situation is rather chilidish.

It's been a long time since I've seen that one. A few things;
- Rick Karattenmaker = PJ? I get some frat guy thought it was his name, but I dont get how that stuck.
- xpolosport does indeed suck. However if he says that other people aren't good then they probably aren't mtgpros. I'm almost as bad at magic as Mike Flores is, yet I was able to T16 something like 11 straight tournaments at the church because the average play calibur was so low.
- Why are people saying ridiculous things like they win fnm 95% of the time? Who cares? Is that even true? Have you really won 19 of the last 20 fnms? Once again, who cares?
- Like Nick said, no one is the next Jon Finkel... except John Price. I've been telling all of the "good" northeast players that he's actually the nuthigh. Now that he's beaten everybody many times (q'd for the pt on rating... ding!) everyone believes him.
- I think I'm poised for a really big comeback. I'm going to be participating at States and I'm probably the odds-on favorite to win. Current state champion Dan Sondike ran all the way up to upstate New York because he understands he basically has no chance of beating me. John Price will still probably win though.
- T8 is half Jund? Cool. John's list was easily the best, and is probably the "deck to play" and "the deck to beat" in T2 right now. I like the Spreading Seas personally. Spread 'em!
If anyone would like to challenge me to an honor duel at states, I will glady accept this challenge, any time, any place, as long as it doesn't interfere with one of my T8 matches. Bring it on!
Edit: This thread isn't nearly as teched out as the JSS Super Series thread was a few years ago. For top magic strategy, I highly suggest someone dig that up.
Spencer, I'm challenging you to an honour duel at States because we both haven't played in forever. I actually touched some cards on Saturday. It felt good.
But anyway, xPolosp0rts can vouch that the best deck from the event didn't top8. If anyone is curious this iss the list:
