I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
My buddy ran UW Merfolk to 2nd place in Maine States...and he was begging for RDW match ups. He had the match down to a science. His sideboard had 12 cards in it that he sided in, and he rolled over them, knowing the right plays to make. He rarely even lost game 1, as you really only have to stop their Demigod of Revenge to gain massive tempo.
GB Elves <-man I hate this deck, it has a 50/50 matchup against Tier 1/2 but loses to jank aggro most of the time. UB Faeries <-only reason it's good is because of all those people that's still playing 5CC. WB Tokens <-so boring, there's only 2 ways to play this deck. RB Blightning <-Autopilotting you to victory 0-2 drop.
???B Super Secret Tech <-dude, this thing is nuts! 90/10 against all matchups.
Most of my losses are to Fae no matter what i use. I don't lose to them all the time but its always the hardest for me. I wouldnt use it because everyone else does and im bored of seeing it. The losses are not what i hate, just the mechanical way the deck is played. EVERYONE knows what to expect and even when they know its coming it still happens. Thats why its the best deck in standard atm, most sideboards are built for it, QnT (5cc) was made to beat it, and even when you know what they are going to do its hard to stop it. Altho i would vote for my grixis Prince of Thralls deck!!!
time has passed and different archetype has different look to them
what is the best standard deck now?
Though I haven't changed how I feel about UW Merfolk being a great meta choice, the best decks are still Kithkin and Faeries. I doubt that's going to change any time soon.

I have no idea what the other guy is talking about. I have played faeries over and over again with my UW merfolk and have won every time. I have no problems with bitter blossoms, or mistbind clique. honestly I think the merfolk deck your talkign about must have a horrible sideboard, because usually fae loses to mer.
The "best" deck in Standard is Faeries, no question.
Very few archetypes in the history of Standard can compare to the results Faeries have posted. Moreover, even fewer archetypes can port to Block, Extended, Legacy (to some degree), and maintain Tier 1 status after a rotation.
Faeries also rewards skilled players, and when you have an archetype that is already inherently broken (unbalanced tribal mechanics), you have a recipe for success.
In addition to the aforementioned, Fae is disgustingly tenacious against the "hate" that is available to other decks. If you analyze the Fae hate cards, on paper it would seem that Fae should not even be playable, yet the deck simply does not care, or has tools to make the necessary adaptations.

I think that's really the key to its success - aside from the fact that the deck is inherently strong - it has tons of flexibility and tools to change to the current meta without losing its strength.

Why was he playing merfolk if he dreaded that matchup that badly? what about the other 63 cards? just turn those islands into plains and run kithkin?

2 weeks have passed. Nothing has changed. Ask again after the Philadelphia 5K and Worlds.

It beats Faeries, 5CC, has a good game against kithkin pre-board and better post-board.
It has a hard time against RDW, but its not as lopsided as the Kithkin vs RDW match-up.
