What else can you guys think of to break this card in Standard? This list doesn't feel like it can do broken things (yet).
It probably isn't very good, but remember that eternalized and embalmed tokens are zombie for embalmer's tools.
I think that fraying sanity my have modern applications but I'm also excited about the possibility of mill in standard. Not sure if there is a wheel effect in standard, but if so it would be bonkers with sanity
This really is a combo deck: you want to put together fraying sanity and Startled Awake, and win. you don't really need all the other mill cards. so the rest of the deck should be counters, draw spells, and stuff that helps you setting up like contingency plan and pieces of the puzzle. you might even want to go blue-green to play 4 haze of pollen and 4 commencement of festivities.

I agree with the last post. I have been trying to make a mill deck in standard for a while now, but it either lacks enough defense to stay alive without counters and bounce effects, or it wont have enough mill effects to end the game. With removal I left the opponent around 12-15 cards before losing, and without removal or less removal they killed me before I made it halfway through their deck. I used basically all the same cards as the list above, and even put green in for fog effects and struggled. This new card really needs to be a combo piece like doc.brown said, with startled awake and a lot of control or fog effects. I did like playing manic scribe with aether tradewinds as a nice repeatable mill and bounce, but it wasn't super consistent, just fun.
yeah the only real bounce effect you want is engulf the shore. i know it's pricey, but we might want to chuck in torrential gearhulk to double up our counters/fogs, add a different way of winning and a way to re-cast startled awake without having to go through the whole trasformation and recast cycle. going green/blue means playing also lumbering falls which is another way of closing the game. thing in the ice could be another interesting card to add. provides early block, potential mass bounce and possible closure.

The version I have built to this point actually is UB, and is being tuned. Once I feel better about the list, I will post it in the Deck Construction forum for feedback there. That all said--any other spells that play favorably with Fraying Sanity?

So I signed up just to reply cuz I can't resist a good effort at alt win cons (I played Narset Transcendent/Startled Awake before rotation of Dragons & Mech Production more recently)
With a little play testing UW seems to be a good start - don't forget, Fraying Sanity is an aura...and open the armory tutors for auras
Ali Aintrazi posted a list on Gathering Magic recently - article with other deck lists here. He basically runs mono-blue, and splashes red for Fevered Visions and Hour of Devastation.

it wouldnt be BAD per`se...
but it lacks cards like crypt incursion and hedron crab... which are the backbone of the modern deck
and NO, minister of inquiries is NO hedron crab
