Tier 1 right now? and post rotation

  • #1
Tier one I think right now is Gruul and Dragonstorm. Tier 1.5 Dralnu,Flare,Angelfire,UR tron. Everything else tier 2.
    Post rotaion probally Narcobridge,Gruul,Dragonstorm,Dralnu.
  • #2
Tier 1 Gruul, AngelFire, UR tron. Tier 1.5 Dralnu, Pickles, project x, Dragonstorm. Tier 2 everything else.
Same with post rotation although I think Pickles might be making a showing.

I think Narcobridge will be tier 1 just based on popularity.

Just because a deck is popular does not make it Tier 1. People love the crap out of MGA, Boros, and people still cherish their "Dimir Grind" decks....That doesnt make them Tier 1.

Aside from that NarcoBridge is a very potent deck, butif it ever becomes a dominant force in the meta most decks have several answers to the combo. It will be Tier 1 if it somehow stays under the radar.....oh.....wait......

Right Now Tier 1: Gruul, Angelfire, UR/x Tron, Pickles(Mono-u or U/w)
Tier 1.5: Dralnu, Dragonstorm, Solar Flare
Tier 2: Project X, Dredge, Zoo, Panda, Glare, Ignite the Warrens, Mono-B Rack etc...etc...etc..

    Post-FS Tier 1: U/w Pickles, UR/x Tron, Dralnu
Tier 1.5: Dragonstorm, SolarFlare, Projext X, NarcoBridge
Tier 2: Anything else that pops up from FS

although these are totally jsut my predictions...

Well what does NarcoBridge do against Tormod's Crypt?

Any competent player wont play it until he NEEDS to, and until you are tapped out, so there goes your Krosan Grip opportunity.

What about the first time a Bridge hits the bin, only to be Extirpated that very instant? What do you do against Turn 0 Leyline?

It can sideboard itself to even the odds against other decks.

How Suspicious... How? Call me crazy but I havent seen any super tech that saves NarcoBridge from all the above mentioned hate.

Admittedly though, I originally was in love with the idea of the deck, and still think it may have some merit, Im just fully convinced right now that it is a bit to unstable. However the Non-FS legal version of Dredge, with Svogthos and Troll as the WC's, seems to be much more consistent and gives much greater fits to control players. Sure its not gonna pull of the consistent turn 4 win, but is gonna controll and stall long enough to slam in with Grave Troll and Svogthos like an angry bull. I think that version has more staying power.

I cant deny the power of BridgeDredge. I mean a God-like hand and the perfect dredge could give you the turn 2 win... but the chances are so slim... Time will tell I suppose.

Well what does NarcoBridge do against Tormod's Crypt?

Trickbind from the side (Everything non-black runs crypt, so it's not really hard to anticipate). Don't overcommit before exploding.

What about the first time a Bridge hits the bin, only to be Extirpated that very instant?

Alternate win conditions, Brain pry MD Naming it before starting engine. Research from the side.

What do you do against Turn 0 Leyline?

Naturalize, Boomerang, Krosan Grip, Wipe away from the side.

Plenty of tech to bring in from the side, only problem being fitting all of it into it. Metagame call though, depending on your personal preference. There's also Darkblast for Yxilid Jailer and Leylines of your own to counter decks that can sack their own creatures. Also most NarcoBridge players play UBG versions for the aforementioned Troll and Svoghthos win conditions in case the main combo kicks it.

Is this a joke? Seriously? I'm sure more than a few people will be all cutesy buttons with a cute little combo deck, but in an environment where remand is the dominant card can the deck really win? It just seems that every deck is either almost as fast, or packs more than one card that annihilates the deck.

Tier 1 right now is Dragonstorm and Gruul. Dralnu comes close. Other than that, every deck is Tier 2 (regardless of how good hatching plans is).

Post-FS, Dragonstorm and gruul are still the most popular decks. Dralnu is still very good, maybe even Tier 1 along with dstorm and gruul. Non-combo dredge decks get a huge boost and seem pretty good. Other than that, I think the same decks are up there as before.

    What exactly is tier 1.5?

Last time I checked there was 3 tiers.

Tier 1 (This would be the most dominating, consistent decks in the format, aka the decks to beat, they post regular top 8's (not at FNM's and but at regularly competitive events such as GP's) and will as a result of netdeckage be part of the current metagame)

Currently: Dralnu, Gruul, Dragonstorm, Tron Variants, Angelfire,
After FS: +MGA, I hate MGA, I don't like MGA but the fact is MGA could post decent results somewhere...

Tier 1.5(This would be something someone made up to make the tier system of ranking even more complex and convoluted. There isn't a 1.5th Place, either your part of the decks to beat or your an aspiring deck in the next tier.)

Tier 2 (This is the decks which may not have proven themselves but have viability to beat tier 1 decks. They could very well post results in the smaller events and could rogue in the top events as well. They actually have a chance to win the tournament given the luck and play skill.)

Go see Competitive Subforum for T2.

Tier 3 (Everything else, why is this important? Cause little Timmy is going to bring his sliver causal deck to FNM which you know won't win a lot however you deck is an aggro deck and his sliver deck is plays a midrange type game you have to find a way to deal with that might sliver or your toasted. Tier 3 is the jank that you actually have to consider in the early rounds of low level events? EX: A player plays a watery grave tapped, followed by an underground river, is he playing dralnu? Turns out he was play playing some jank U/B aggro without strong counters, knowing this would effect your game plan alot.)

MBC, WB, Slivers... etc. you get the picture Decks built sub optimally, without a defined strategy, or with just not a good enough strategy.

Sorry to sound obvious here, but how on earth does NarcoBridge survive post-rotation? I think it has a lot of potential at the moment (i'm taking my own version to Regionals) but post-rotation... Dredge doesn't exist. Unless you want to do something with Dakmor Salvage I think you're out of luck :p

Heh... the rotation they're talking about is Future Sight coming in, not Ravnica leaving. Though ironically, I pretty much agree with your assessment of its chances anyway ;).

    Anyway, current and post rotation:
Tier 1: Gruul, MGA, MGH, D-storm, Dralnu
    Tier 1.5: Angelfire, Cell, Izzetron
Tier suck: Pickles, Narcobridge, Boros, Martyrton, Triscuitron, Solar Flare/Pox, etc.

Tron has posted, and continues to post tangible results in credible tournaments, whereas MGA/MGH has done nothing on a big stage.

Martyrtron should definitely be able to make a strong comeback imo. What are the current tier 1 decks? Dragonstorm and Gruul. Guess what their nightmare matchup is? Lifegain. Turn 2 sac a martyr for 15 life is essentially good game vs. dragonstorm, and a turn 4 proclamation cycle with tron pieces makes it even worse for gruul. Gruul has sulfur elemental but Martyrtron has like, what, every removal in the format?

Not to mention, Martyr also has an extremely good game vs. other contenders in the format including angelfire and izzetron, since their win conditions mainly focus on dealing lethal to a conventional control deck like Dralnu or the mirror. However, a 15-point demonfire is not a very large threat threat vs. martyrtron which essentially blanks out half their deck.

"But extirpate is out there, have you read extirpate? Extirpate owns martyrtron"

The thing with a well built martyrtron deck is, it doesn't very much focus on the martyr combo. Martyrtron decks are just UW tron decks with a little extra "something-something" vs. damage decks. Often extirpating martyr of sands does even less than extirpating wrath of god, which is a bad play by itself. Also, there's a card out there that acts as the "anti-extirpate", pull from eternity. If an opponent extirpates your martyr, you can just as easily get it back as if nothing happened, turning that extirpate into just an uncounterable funeral charm. Aside from all that, how many decks actually play extirpate? How many good black decks are there out at the moment? Only solar flare and dralnu could possibly play extirpate, but dralnu plays 1 and solar flare usually plays none.

What else is Martyrtron weak against? Let's see: Sulfur Elemental, Detritivore and grave hate in general.

    So...let's see.

Sulfur elemental - Killed by sunlance, wrath of god, condemn, judge unworthy

Detritivore - Pull From Eternity, Sacred Ground

Leyline of the Void - Disenchant
    Moratorium Stone - Disenchant
Withered Wretch - Everything that kills sulfur elemental and more
    Extirpate - Pull from Eternity

So everything that apparently kills martyrtron is solved by easily accessible sideboard and mainboard options. Hate aside, martyrtron is invincible vs. 95% of the field.

    Post FS Tiers

Tier 1: Gruul, possibly Martyrtron, Dragonstorm, Pickles, Rack
Tier 1.5: Dralnu, UR tron, Angelfire, Dredge etc.
Tier 2: Zoo, Boros, Bridge Dredge, Project X
Tier 3: Firemane control, land destruction, monogreen aggro

    PS.
Monogreen aggro in all its forms is a joke. Even jank like blink riders top 8's occasionally while mga NEVER DOES. ANYWHERE. Please, never mention this deck in a competitive discussion ever again, it's actually so terrible. The johnny clinging on to his one-time-ever turn 3 kill might disagree, but the truth is decks like gruul and dragonstorm consistently get turn 3 kills with less cards, while control decks can count on turn 3/4 control of the game. Looking then at Mga, you'll find it's hardly more competitive than a casual deck.

MGA AND MGH, may not be teir 1 but they are solid decks. I have turn three killed in probably 20% of my games. The haste version is very solid, while a little unreliable at times, which again i agree doesnt make it tier 1 but it could very well be the reason some other decks dont make tier one becuase of its explosivness. Its worst match is matrytron and I agree it is probably the most resiliant deck in standard. Gruul is obviously superior to mono-green but anyone can build mono-green, its relativly cheap and even new players can pilot it to decent results with some lucky draws. Even tier 3 can take down tier one with luck.

Pickles is a very competetive Deck, and one that looks to be on the rise, and Solar Flare has just had a rebirth. Mono-G is a one-trick-pony who had it's 15 minutes of fame long ago. You also bother to include MartyrTron and TriscuiTron in your Meta overview, when neither of them have been very alive in the Meta since the month after Worlds.

Im normally not one to rant about other people's ratings of decks/cards etc... But this one was so far off that something needs to be said.

Both Pickles and Solar Flare are far superior and deserve to be in a Teir 1.5 spot at the least for now... and both MGA or MGH deserve to be placed in your so aptly named "Tier Suck"
