Welcome to the Mono Black, or as i prefer to call it "Dark Eldrazi", Standard Primer!
This deck is inspired by Seth Manfield's brew, which can be found here.
Being very new to standard, please note that this is a work in progress and all constructive opinions are much appreciated! Also note that this a post-Fate Reforged and KTK deck
I am trying to model this deck to something like Jund's gameplay in modern. Discard, removals, boardwipe and get a 5/5 Reality Smasher smashing you down!
Creatures
Like all Eldrazi decks, you will need the core creatures. We all know them well enough, so no point delving further.
Spells
Duress
This is the card i want in my opening hand. It may not be a Thoughtseize or an IoK but for B you'll get to peek into your opponent's hand and take out an early threat. In this current meta, i think it's better than Transgress The Mind by a mile. It's also the only 1 drop in the list.
Flaying Tendrils
Potentially a T3 boardwipe, that exiles all creatures instead of just killing them. With alot of graveyard shenannigans in the coming set, this might just turn out to be our ace in the hole.
Lands
This is where i think we tend to get edge our opponents out. We have about 9 utility lands, not including the pain lands, to help with board control and card draws.
Mirrorpool
For 4C u can bring in another TKS and get an opponent to discard with its etb effect. We'll seldom use the copy spell imo. The downside is the "Enters The Battlefield Tapped". However, with just 2 of these, it shouldn't disrupt our tempo.
Blighted Fen
4B and you can get your opponent to sac a creature. Definitely doesn't work as well if you're facing lots of tokens.
Foundry of the Consuls
The only flying creature in our deck is Bearer of Silence and it can't block. So getting 1/1 thopters attacking your opponent or defending an aerial assault seems good, with all those Thopter Engineer running around.
Crumbling Vestige
Other than the painlands, this card also helps with the mana fixing in our deck. Never disappointed to draw it.
Sideboard
A fairly standard sb with boardwipes and removals. Looking forward to Chaplain's Blessing for life gain. Helps alot for a midrange deck.
Is a monster in this current meta, just not sure on which sb slot to replace it with.
Upgrades
I was thinking of replacing Endless One with Hangarback Walker. Hopefully a few games with it can give me a clearer picture.
Matchups
So far, my matches have been against GWB Planeswalkers, RGU Midrange, Mono Red Thopters.
GWB Planeswalkers
Won G1 and G3 by a hair. Reality Smasher and Mirrorpool combined well for a hard fought victory.
This deck definitely needs a strong opening hand to overcome decks that plan to go wide.
Lost 0-2
One of those token decks which basically kills you with attacks from above. I think we need to mull aggresively for a Flaying Tendril for this matchup.
Drana, Liberator of Malakir: A must answer threat with evasion. She quickly builds your attackers. Devastating with Reality Smasher or Pitiless Horde.
Pitiless Horde: Simply a hard hitter with dash. This 2x has been great at pressing the opponent. Trades with the majority of the field. Wins against most when attacking with Drana.
Endbringer: A mana dump that helps you grind out games. Repeatedly dealing damage, drawing you cards, or paralyzing an opposing threat. It's always "untapped" status is huge.
Rogue's Passage: Allowing a heavy hitter to break through the line late game can change the tide or finish the game.
I played a bit of this deck during Oath standard, including winning gameday with it.
Losing Tomb sucks bad. But maybe Blighted Steppe could do a reasonable impression. I'm relying on activating it off Caves of Kolios only. I suppose there is an opportunity there to also include Shambling Vents to up the source count, but that seems almos equally hard to activate, but also involves adding tapped lands.
I've replaced Ghostfire Blade (was only a 1-of by the end) with Endbringer. And Murderous Cut with Warping Wail. I'm unsure on the side. We'll have to see how things develop.
Yeah, it's like Eye of Ugin going up to $50-60, and now down to 20. The deck still gets Legacy Play, but it's not as substantial as the demand was for it for the big GP Modern weekend. With a ban incoming, the shell for Standard was already inexpensive and getting cheaper since no one has been talking about it being a viable archetype in SOI standard. I think it's still pretty great. My list is only $150 and was able to keep up with the decks last format. Great budget option imo.
Hey guys.. I was thinking of mainboarding 1x languish and adding 1x or 2x virulent plague inthe sb.. I think this meta has lots of creature generators and i seem to suffer alot with decks that go wide..
Languish might not be a good card in the list anywhere. It destroys everything we have besides Reality Smasher.
As a guess, I believe some of the better SB options week one would include:

Shoot, TKS cost me 25$ each and Smasher 10$ and Mimic 10$. Pro Tour weekend prices! haha!
Nev, Do you think you will get any more reps in with your BC Eldrazi deck?
Languish might not be a good card in the list anywhere. It destroys everything we have besides Reality Smasher.
As a guess, I believe some of the better SB options week one would include:
My prediction is that BB is going to be the strongest color in SOI as it has answers to everything.
But a T3 Matter Reshaper followed by a T4 Languish might turn out well for us. Followed by a T5 Reality Smasher. If everything goes to plan.
We also have to take note of token decks and that the more popular creatures in this meta has toughness of 3. Flaying Tendrils won't do much, except maybe against tokens.
@Sam - Point taken. We could try a couple in the Sb and see how it goes. There also seems to be a case for main deck Ruinous Path as there is good chance that a lot of Planeswalkers emerge. But that is the problem right now: The great unknown.

@Kpal i'm also weighing up the Eldrazi Mimic's performance in the deck. Is there another 2 drop that would be a good replacement for it, other than Hedron Crawler of cos.
Btw, please update on this thread ur exploits with ur deck. I'd appreciate the insight.
What do you not like about Eldrazi Mimic? You could try Carrier Thrall.
As you see from my list, the majority of my creatures give you something when they die.

As you see from my list, the majority of my creatures give you something when they die.
I'm thinking of Languish and Virulent Plague in the mb. Therefore, the tokens by Carrier Thrall might not be effective enough.
Also, i was thinking of dropping 2 Mimics for 2 Transgress. i guess i'll need to keep on play testing this deck.
i have also updated the 2x Endless one for 2x Hangarback Walker.
Nev, Do you think you will get any more reps in with your BC Eldrazi deck?
Yeah, most likely. Either that or the Mono-Red version. Though, I tried it out and while Chandra was powerful, the deck felt a lot more linear. I think I like the CB version better just because I feel like it can play from behind a bit more. But I can't emphasise the loss of Tomb enough. That might have been our best card in a weird way.
Everything is pretty straightforward I think, just good creatures, I like the hedron crawler to stay just because it will give the extra speed sometimes If I need it. The endless one, essence depleter, and liliana are all just win conditions I added when I was remaking the deck, I had room for four slots so I added these. I don't think Liliana or the Depleter are good in mutiples so I put one of both, so far, they've been pretty decent in my scrub testing, The depleter won me atleast one game on it's own after a board stall.
More unsure of this. the deck used to be B/U but I figured blue was just getting me counterspells and Blinding Drone and I wasn't sure it was worth it. So, I added more discard. One of the biggest issues with the original decklist was when the board clogged up the tokens weren't good enough of a strategy so I changed it to add more removal. For mono black however I'm pretty sure this spell suite is probably decent. The Endurance is conditional removal/protection or at worst a shock
this is the sideboard. Sorry for little insight, I haven't had really good competition to play it against because of time constraints currently. Any advice is appreciated. One possible change I might try out is minus the hedron crawlers and put in Bearer of Silence then I would remove two paths and put in probably Spatial Contortion
I've been brewing on this for a month now while I've been stocking up on cards. I ran white earlier but now I'm mostly black, but I still splash white for Shambling Vent and to run a couple of Anguished Unmaking.
I'm now trying out Ever After while play testing, this won me a game.
I love Hedron Crawler and be able to ramp out Seer and Smasher earlier, more then I love Mimics!
Bearer of SilenceI want to saymust be played for 4 mana or else you will always regret it, I have. Again Hedron helps with that ^^
I'm brewing a B/W version of this deck. I think the white splash gives us a lot of things we want, and I don't think it matters that we play a bunch of ETB tapped lands, since this deck really doesn't have a 1-drop. I'm quite fine playing 4 Shambling Vents and 3 Evolving Wilds.
White gives us:
1. Silkwrap and Declaration in Stone - stuff that helps exile creatures for Wasteland Strangler (a card I've seen in few lists). There are going to be a lot of pesky Humans running around in this format. Being able to go t2 Silkwrap into t3 Wasteland Strangler is going to hurt them badly.
2. Anguished Unmaking - our answer to Westvale Abbey, Archangel Avacyn, and Planeswalkers.
3. Sorin - Sorin's +1 ability is awesome in a deck with a lot of decently-costed cards. +1 Sorin into Reality Smasher is going to be huge.
4. Eldrazi Displacer - our answer to Reflector Mage and removal.
5. Archangel Avacyn - this card is busted, and even though she's not an Eldrazi, she fits well into this deck. We don't even care that she kills our own Hangarbacks and Matter Reshapers - we get value out of them anyways.
The purpose of playing Eldrazi in this format is value creatures. Control is going to struggle to beat this deck because every creature gives us value and card advantage. Our problem is going to be aggro, specifically hyper-aggro. Therefore, the sideboard is tuned more towards lifegain and additional removal.
totally. A lot of our creatures become other creatures when they die.
However, If I were to run a third mana source, in addition to B and C, it would be R all the way. Forerunner of slaughter is badass. Both FoS and Thopter Engineer look real good coming off of Matter Reshaper.
Although I am not certain the mana fixing can be as good in this deck as CBW would be.
Overall, i think splashing white to go tri-color is quite hard on our mana base. but it also depends on the creatures we use. if there is less C in the casting cost, we can splash white.
The nice thing about the white splash is Blighted Steppe and possibly Shambling Vent, even if you don't play any actual white cards (in fact, not doing so makes it more consistent).
Ruins is especially good if you are running Mimic. You can respond to the mimic trigger by putting a counter on the creature it is copying. Mimic will copy the total P/T of the creature (includes counter), but changes its base P/T, any counters on Mimic it self will also apply afterwards. This makes additional Mimics and Bearer pump Mimic. 5/5 Seers and 6/6 Smashers are not bad either.

Warping Wail
A great utility card, which can get you a 4/4 or 5/5 a turn earlier. Also helps to counter cards from Dragon Fodder to Bring To Light. Not to mention exiling an Abbot of Keral Keep or Stormchaser Mage.
Spatial Contortion
You can either pump or destroy a creature with this one.
Grasp of Darkness
I'm still thinking if is should run Flaying Tendrils instead of this in the mb. However, creatures in this current meta are mostly with 3 toughness and above. Eg. Sylvan Advocate and Reflector Mage. Languish is an option but it hurts us bad too.
Flaying Tendrils
Potentially a T3 boardwipe, that exiles all creatures instead of just killing them. With alot of graveyard shenannigans in the coming set, this might just turn out to be our ace in the hole.
