Welcome to the new evolution of the Budget Deck Challenge!
Things have been refreshed to be simpler and cleaner looking (and easier to maintain) The old thread was full of old posts with rotated decks, and it's time to shake things up!
With rising costs in standard, it's harder to be competitive on a $10 budget. We are now going to compete directly with Wizard's target demographic for beginning players: The intro pack. Our goal is to build the strongest, most competitive deck for the same amount of money a player would spend on an Intro Pack, namely $15. We are looking to take down decks costing up to 30x more than ours. If you live for challenge and thrive on uphill battles, you have come to the right place my friend.
$10 builds are also welcome, just notate that it's a $10 build in the title so we can all see your supreme budget building skills!
Be sure to stop by and read the rules section, if you want to participate.
UUUUU RULES UUUUU
1. Deck must be Standard Legal: ISD / DKA / AVR / M13 / RTR
2. Deck must be $10 or $15 or less using tcgplayer "low" as a metric
.......... This total includes the cost of your sideboard, if you have one
.......... Prices fluctuate, so be sure to Timestamp your deck to lock in prices
.......... Basic Lands = FREE (people just give them away)
3. Deck should be focused on being competitive, not casual
As long as you Timestamp your deck, it's legal even if prices go up the next day. However, if you mod the deck, you need a new Timestamp and you will no longer be legal if you are over the limit. Plan carefully!

TITLE: This deck has almost 100% flying creatures, or ones that can get flying. Take to the air, get ahead, then lock it down to keep it that way! STYLE: Aggro Tempo
Most of the blue white decks you see in RTR styles are the kind with board wipes, control cards, and big bomb finishers. So what happens when we try to do aggro instead? Well you get aggro with control elements.
How do we go about business? Drop a threat, then start racing. Almost everything in the deck is evasive, and the support cards allow you to race, and stop counter attacks cold. A fast, smooth curve and 22 lands ensure you have a constant supply of fuel, not flood. Cheap counterspells and removal such as Oblivion Ring and Detention Sphere ensure they never land anything of value to stop your race.
POWER PLAYS:
1) Judge's Familiar + Civic Saber - Make your own delver w/o needing to run 24 spells maindeck
2) Anything with flying + Hands of Binding - Anything you don't detain or remove, you just tap it down forever
3) Lyev Skyknight + Swift Justice - One example of anti counterattack. Drop Skyknight, detain one potential threat, then when they attack with the other, tap one white to gain 4 and take it out on the block!
*** DECKBUILDER'S NOTES ***
-Sideboard has the ability to turn this into a more frontloaded aggro deck for the mirror, but also more aggro defense and an extra land just in case.
@The Dork Knight: I do understand where you are coming from. However, the price of cards 6 months ago were a lot smaller for most playables than they are now. Compare cards like Grimgrin, (>$1) to efficient beaters at the same rarity such as Armada Wurm ($14) or even lesser rarity like Loxodon Smiter ($3).
Prices and hype are up, and just like adjusting for inflation, we need a bit of breathing room to gain access to more cards.
Supreme Verdict is dropping in price, and is almost $3. If you remember my old version of Grimgrin Zombies, I had 2x Gravecrawler maindeck, and that was @ $3.25 each. Death by Tokens had a lot of playable $1 rares, and even $1.50 uncommons. So even with the old $10 system, you could still cram strong cards in if you built the rest of the deck properly. Playable $1 rares are now costing $2-$3 in RTR. I also should mention the $10 challenge had $1 extra for sideboard, this one $15 has to cover everything (+$4 in actual budget)
I don't think $15 is enough to build a functional cheap version of any of the top tier decks properly.
Personally, I don't think a $4 difference in price is a challenge breaker. You are right the most expensive cards in the format are from ISD, however, those are cards we couldn't fit in the deck before, and can't now. (GoST, LoTV, etc)
The cards I'm talking about are the staple $1 rares. Those are now $2-$3 in RTR. (I gave a few examples above). Back to the old format vs new: M12 was legal back then, and Day of Judgement was $2. Supreme Verdict which for our purposes does the same thing, is $3.50, and was $5 just two weeks ago. We are getting replacements that are more expensive.
I agree that the further up you go the closer they resemble archetype decks. If RTR prices were not as high as they are across the board, it would have been ok to stay at $10 + $1 sideboard vs $15 total deck. In retrospect, It might have been a good idea to poll the community to see if an increase was something everyone wanted.

personally i think the $15 budget limit is fine. Its only natural for someone to "copy" an archetype out there it happens, but with the amount of viable cards out now, with some prices flucuating the way they are i feel this was a necessary adjustment. think about it. notice how active the $10 budget challenge was until card prices changed alot. then it slowed down. I think this will breath life into the challenge again. i know i have a deck brewing now that i will send in later today.

(O_o) .....the face I made the moment I realized that deep down.... I am a mill deck player.
If it is one thing i noticed, is that haste is an undervalued ability in magic and many players take this ability for granted, either excluding it or writing it off as a "tier 2" ability. We also know that no one will ever give credit to RDW decks saying that they are short lived, easy to play against decks that "run out of gas" in every match. Well me being the guy that i am, decided to take my hand to RDW and modify it a little. Make it stronger, and give it the ability to put every deck in my shoes.....play fast or run out of time.
I give you the Time Clock deck. The name simply means that at some point (as early as T2) a clock will be put on the game. This clock comes in two staple cards of the deck Curse of stalked prey and Curse of the pierced heart. both 2 cmc curses gives your opponent two different time tables. Every creature in this deck has haste, so Stalked prey says "act now before they get hideously huge and you lose" and Pierced heart says "No Time to wait you keep losing life while getting attacked and burned"
the big synergy in this deck is the 17 Hasting Creatures creates constant pressure while you curse them, and keep their board clean with your burn spells. Electrikery is an easy overload trigger to deal with pesky early game 1/1 tokens, mana dorks, or dare i say it....Invisible stalkers Devil's play is simply a win more con and another versatile option do take bigger threats off the board.
the side board is just simply a change of pace. You have the option to enhance the control side of this deck by including the Traitorous cards along with Zealous conscripts for matches against planeswalkers, and creatures like Trostani.
Even with part of this deck it has the potential to be a mid to late game threat, something not known in RDW decks. now for the list
-Creatures in this deck are here to turn sideways. do not by any means hesitate to attack even if they have blocks
-for those looking to remove budget restrictions, Vexing Devil adds early game pressure in this build since his board pressence is not needed, Ash Zealout would be a staple as you get a 2/2 beater and pwns snapcaster players.
-Mizzium Mortars would be a no brainer non budget substitution, but is not necessary in this deck.
Any possible way to squeeze a playset of Rakdos Cackler in there?
I'm also thinking you should take out both Hellriders, and use the budget for some Ash Zealots instead. It's rough, because rider used to be just $1.50ish, and now it's almost $4 each. Standard is getting pricey. Zealots are still $2 each, but not for much longer!
I'm also trying to think of anything that would combo with Pierced Heart Curse...

Well, i left Rakdos cackler out because having him in there is the same as playing a 2cmc hasty creature. I wanted to focus on the haste rather than the unleash, thats all. Not saying he won't fit but there is no real tempo advantage with him in this case.
Ash Zealot i feel like is situational. Awsome creature and awsome card, but if im playing someone who has minimal graveyard interaction, i feel like that extra 3 damage ability would be a waste and im just stuck with a 2/2 that will fall victim to a pillar of flame. Once i play test the current list i will evaluate more though. But as of now, i like the more proactive approach with hellrider and automatic damage.
As for the Curse of Pierced heart, it is a clock. the only real thing it does is upkeep damage, and then stack them as you get them. It makes your opponent respect the enchantment, making them side in enchantment hate, lowering their creature force/ spot removal for game 2. coupled with stalked prey curse then they are stuck with 2 clocks, 1 that winds them down and the other winds my creatures up.

*** BACKGROUND ***
This is a slightly modified (for budget reasons) RDW deck that I played at the begining of this Standard season. The deck is extremely fast - it regularly goldfishes turn 4-5 wins - and will punish the popular durdly decks that see competitive play and rely on Turn 4-5 Thragtusk to stabalize. It has the option to either kill the opponent before they have the chance to cast Tusk, or simply kill them with burn/flying creatures after it hits the board.
The deck is your standard RDW and plays like it... if you know how to play RDW, you'll do fine, if you don't, you won't.
Prices should be right - I actually built the deck last night, but my computer did... something... with it. I'm working under the assumption that prices didn't change in the last 12-ish hours since there was no major tournament or anything.
+EDIT+ I updated the decklist in the following ways: -2 Archwing Dragon, -1 Brimstone Volley; +2 Zealous Conscripts, +1 Mountain. I did it for 2 reasons:
1. Zealous Conscipts is amazing, and
2. Archwing Dragon is nearly worthless in multiples

Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.
@redthirst: Q: How do you beat Thragtusk? A: Turn dudes sideways. Sweet build man!
Basically.
Thragtusk is the biggest roadblock for Aggro, but I've been successfully playing around it for a month now:
-If they don't play early disruption, acceleration, they simply stumble on mana, or even if you just go first some games - you can easily kill them before it sees play.
-After it sees play, you can sometimes finish them off anyway with a kamikazi charge + burn.
-If you have to play a longer game (not optimal, but doable) you can kill them with threats Thrags can't interact with - Archwing Dragon and Hellion Crucible.
-Post board you can side out Pillars for Traitorous Blood and hit them with their own guy.
And thanks. Glad you like it.

What about using 4 Zealous Conscripts, and remove the 2 Archwing Dragons?
Edit: @Redthirst. I realize adding four Stromkirk Nobles would put the total over the allotted budget, but would they be a better choice than something present in your deck currently? I ended up picking up a set on whim for a few bucks, so I have those to add if they would improve the overall deck.

Both those options cost too much money to stay under $15. If your budget allows, I'd suggest -4 Waif, -3 Mauler, -2 Archwing; +4 Stromkirk, +4 Hellrider, +1 Devil's Play to improve the deck. Those changes should run you an additional $25 - 30.
If you just want to run the Nobles you picked up, I consider them an upgrade from Reckless Waif - easy substitution.

TITLE: The deck kills a lot of creatures. Tap your lands, flip the switch, watch things die. It's a massacre. STYLE: Disruption Control
I like builds in colors that go opposite of what you think they do. Normally you see Rakdos playing balls to the wall aggro. Well I like control decks. So it's time to go rogue, and make a control deck with no blue in it. Besides, my favorite colors are black and red.
The plan is to lay down a smaller creature that may not seem like a threat, then lay waste to their board and hand. Thrill-Kill Assassin is an awesome blocker, and Basilica Screecher turns every spell into leech, helping you to stabilize. Get Guttersnipe down and really start taking down their life total. Turn 4 drop your resilient, evasive flyer or turn 6 drop your BOMB and proceed to win the game. It's a classic control shell with that black red flavor of destroying everything in your way.
POWER PLAYS:
1) Guttersnipe + Basilica Screecher + Mana and Spells - Add tons of value to anything you cast!
2) Multiple Guttersnipes + Searing Spear - You can wipe out more than 1/3rd of their life total with just two Guttersnipes and one spear!
3) Unblocked Carnival Hellsteed + Auger Spree - Take 10+ to the face!
*** DECKBUILDER'S NOTES ***
-The sideboard turns the deck into a solid hand destruction deck, and also adds more aggro for the control vs control matchup.
So after testing Time Clock RDW, found a few things to adjust. Here is are the updates:
Electrickery is out. I thought it would be a good match against certain things, but spreading 1 damage isn't enough to slow down mana dorks, and tokens don't stay 1 toughness long enough. (-2 electrickery)
Lowered the curve a little by reducing Archwing dragon to 3, and Curse of stalked prey to 3. Added +4 Rakdos Cackler
Zealous conscripts and Searing spear were removed, brimstone volley now mainboard at 4 because its too easy to trigger morbid. Thunderbolt and 1 extra devil's play take up the sideboard now. Also added 2 Ash Zealouts MB reducing Hellrider to 1 MB.
Here is the new list....which so far has been alot smoother and less problematic:
-Electrickery, Searing spear removed for more streamline play
- SB adjusted to bigger deck weaknesses (flying creatures and humans)
- Zealous conscripts removed for more RDW feel.
- Hellrider reduced for budget to fit Ash Zealot
- lower curve and streamline adjustments to take pressure off of drawing into curses, making them "win more-ish"
- Hellrider now a "win more" con behind burning them with Devil's play.
this is just an updated version of the original, as always, i would love more feedback to make me a better deck builder!

(O_o) .....the face I made the moment I realized that deep down.... I am a mill deck player.
So my mind is flowing alot about brewing things, as it always does, and i noticed that defenders are gaining synergy with each other now. why not show them some love right?
So in this deck i don't see how aggro could get through without actual spot removal, but it should be fast enough that Doorkeeper and his band of merry defending creatures can mill your opponent to death, along with Nephalia drownyard for help. Axebane Guardian helps fix mana and makes it easier to drop Manor Gargoyle who can serve as an offense to wield Trepanation blade to speed up the mill process or just beat face.
I think this concept is straight forward enough to be effective especially since the only interaction you have with your opponent is to target their library, or counter spells you cant handle on the board. When all else fails, Devastation Tide can reset the tempo for you.
****DECKBUILDERS NOTES****
-focus on Milling. curve caters to that first.
-Manor Gargoyle is more of an alternate method. Only activate him if necessary. you want him indestructable (Supreme Verdict comes to mind)
-Devastation tide is a desperation reset. No need to miracle cast just because you draw it. Use as situation needs.
-Manor Gargoyle not your fancy? Delver of Secrets fits in this mold to lower the curve and functions as a Trep Blade carrier.
-use nephalia drownyard often.
-Rise from the grave is meant to change the pace if you mill a creature into their graveyard that you might want to use.
I know the mana needs work but i figured i would put it up to get some feed back while i figure out how to fix it. what do you guys think?
I ran the Azorius deck last night in FMN. Some quick notes: I didn't top deck Supreme Verdict as much as I liked. I had two Terminus cards in my side board, both Jace cards, and one Taimyo but I only tried using the Architect but never drew him.
I had huge problems with Knight of Infamy, especially once the exalted got up and going. The primarily mode of exalted came through some land cards (Cathedral of War?) which beefed it up. I could not remove it at all except for a Supreme Verdict draw one time, but I ultimately went 0-2 against the deck. Should I consider side boarding Unsummon? It seems like the best solution.
Overall, I went 1-2 the entire night (we had a low turnout). Any suggestions to beefing the deck up a bit? I know it would break budget but I really enjoy the play style.
so i did a little testing with Mill Defenders....and it works well for what its worth. Now i just need a faster angle to get the mill going quicker. Maybe even a different creature to carry Trep Blade for an aggro threat.
Against fast aggro decks its been solid because of the early combat defense, but im thinking about squeezing in Rootborn defense or Sheltering Word for creature protection.
EDIT: i guess i should say it here but i may be hanging up standard play soon. Looking at my collection and how much money i have spent trying to stay standard legal, i may make a move to playing the modern format exclusively. larger card base, alot of which i have, means i don't have to trade/shop/hustle for cards as much, lol

this is defintiely interesting, and I found a couple of Axebane Guardians lying around from my past (and admittedly dissapointing) RTR packs, so
I'll try to make this deck... but I'll have to stay within RTR and M13 since those are the only ones whose sets are readily available. lol
BUT, though very incomplete, here's what I've got, knowing its main purposes are milling and defending:
So from what I've already got, that;s 19 cards, and i want 24 lands with this, so that leaves room for 17 more. I know it needs more counters, but most of them are already sitting in my Izzet deck (except for that one Negate and a couple Essence Scatters... but i don't think this deck needs any anti-creature counters) Inaction Injunction and Encrust are there for control, the Mindsculpts and Vedalken Entrancer is for extra milling. Crosstown Courier might be useful there, too. Rubbleback Rhino and [c]Mizzium Skin[c] are there mostly because of hexproof
I have a feeling I might need more creats with Defender, so I was thinking of splashing Black for Trestle Troll and Ogre Jailbreaker or Red for Walll of Fire and i guess Lobber Crew. I mean, it would introduce me to building 3-color decks, but I'm not so sure.
Thoughts? I know this is quite a change, but the focus is still on Axebane and Doorkeeper

*** BACKGROUND ***

*** DECKBUILDER'S NOTES ***
-Creatures in this deck are here to turn sideways. do not by any means hesitate to attack even if they have blocks
-for those looking to remove budget restrictions, Vexing Devil adds early game pressure in this build since his board pressence is not needed, Ash Zealout would be a staple as you get a 2/2 beater and pwns snapcaster players.
-Mizzium Mortars would be a no brainer non budget substitution, but is not necessary in this deck.
Tell me what you guys think!

I got you shinbatsu.

*** DECKBUILDER'S NOTES ***
—Jaya Ballard, task mage
T1: Cackler
T2: Ash Zealot / Shred Freak -> Swing for 4
What else would you do T1 besides pillar their creature? (if you are on the play it's hard)
Your build does have the HUGE advantage of maindeck Hellrider, and dual curse is a very unique take on RDW. Pretty cool stuff.
@redthirst: Q: How do you beat Thragtusk? A: Turn dudes sideways. Sweet build man!

Basically.
Thragtusk is the biggest roadblock for Aggro, but I've been successfully playing around it for a month now:
And thanks. Glad you like it.
—Jaya Ballard, task mage
I like the build, very well thought out
I see what you are talking about shin. i finally got a chance to test the deck too. I will repost it with some changes soon.
Thanks.
I updated the list and info a bit.
—Jaya Ballard, task mage
—Jaya Ballard, task mage

*** BACKGROUND ***

- Zealous conscripts removed for more RDW feel.

- lower curve and streamline adjustments to take pressure off of drawing into curses, making them "win more-ish"
- Hellrider now a "win more" con behind burning them with Devil's play.

I had huge problems with Knight of Infamy, especially once the exalted got up and going. The primarily mode of exalted came through some land cards (Cathedral of War?) which beefed it up. I could not remove it at all except for a Supreme Verdict draw one time, but I ultimately went 0-2 against the deck. Should I consider side boarding Unsummon? It seems like the best solution.
Overall, I went 1-2 the entire night (we had a low turnout). Any suggestions to beefing the deck up a bit? I know it would break budget but I really enjoy the play style.
I know it needs more counters, but most of them are already sitting in my Izzet deck (except for that one Negate and a couple Essence Scatters... but i don't think this deck needs any anti-creature counters)
Inaction Injunction and Encrust are there for control, the Mindsculpts and Vedalken Entrancer is for extra milling.
