I have 2 verdict and 3 terminus main. It seems to work, but I don't rate doomed traveller in control, he just takes up a slot I don't want to use. I was thinking about dead weight.
The game just becomes so much harder if they get you down to 8 or so. I do win, but it is still a struggle. feeling of dread has been my MVP.
Snapcaster mage for me was just not working out
here's my current build dude you might get the idea...
the mechanics of my deck is to have a good amount of lands at turn 5 and have terminus by that time or verdict...digging cards through think twice stalling my opponents creature by FOD then snappy supports for reuse of other spells like charm and sweepers...snappy can also be a good blocker and has a good combo on charm...5 sweepers is good if you have a good amount of diggers...i dont rely much on forbidden but sometimes i need to dig for sweepers most of the time it really helps dig...im a big fan of miracle thats why i use think twice to utilize miracle on my opponents turn...jace helps me protect my self from aggro and also dig cards as much as possible... i have only 1 tamiyo so thats much of it...i use evolving wilds again because most of the time i mana flood it helps me to shuffle my deck in need and also fetching basic land is good to fix mana problem...i sideboarded all my counterspell because sometimes it is a dead card in my hand and mostly my opponents in my local fnm are aggro type and midrange type...
btw i remove desecration demon and vamp because i felt my deck is getting far from control and felt like midrange instead of control so i removed it and browse other esper control deck online to look for concepts and thats where i got my current build....
Time to do some updates. I tried out grixis control last week and went 3-1-1 and came 5th/6th or something, and then went back to this deck. Changed a few slots and I think I made the deck slightly more focused/streamlined and I am really happy with it. Went 5-0 in the last standard tournament, over 30 people. Not going to do a full tournament report but played vs Junk reanimator, g/w aggro, rakdos aggro (rakdos wins?), UWR midrange (tempo deck with geist and hellkite), and a white weenie deck (surprisingly this and the g/w aggro decks were the hardest matchups).
g/w aggro deck had 4 thalias main.
the white weenie deck had 4 militants and judges familiars main as well as 4 thalias in the board.
Both went 4-1 and only lost to me but also destroyed all the reanimator/bant control lists in the store (there was about 4 of each)
Notable changes:
- Went down to 26 lands
- Sweeper split in favor of Verdict (due to far less zombies)
- Went to 4 souls from 3, they are just too good vs pretty much anything that isn't rancor/craterhoof
- Added snaps and more counterspells (fight the tempo decks)
- took away a sphere (not sure if i want 2-4, they are really useful vs artifacts/walkers and some creatures but so useless vs things like thragtusk plus there is a lot of hate for it which can lead to blowouts)
- Revelation is awesome and having 2 is great, If i dont absolutely need to counter or remove something with snap, i tend to like to snap back revelations
The sideboard is bounds better than it was before. Game 2, siding in 3 dreads and having 7 sweepers is tough on any aggro deck. While, vs control I can side in a 27th land and going up to 3 drownyards + just overload on counters and Jace 3.0. Going up to 4 uncounterable wraths is rly relevant vs the tempo geist decks as well. Lastly, vs reanimator I side in a bunch of counterspells and with 6 of them exiling + 2 snaps, its usually gg. I no longer try to mill out reanimator decks, and instead just play souls and sorins with counterspells (and just play tempo).
Im loving this deck as it can play super strong control as well as go on the offensive very quickly. Can also play a tempo game to most control decks with drownyards, jace 3.0, and souls being such a house vs them.
Thoughts? Comments?
PS: also went 4-0 and won draft out of 24 ppl, izzet splashing black op
See I like this list, but my meta is a lot faster due to the abundance of red deck wins. I have been thinking about possibly getting the third feeling in the main deck and would really like a playset of lingering souls main but can't find anything to cut. My list is near identical to chaam's except i have mained a verdict over a terminus.
I don't really like tapout as it allows their Thragtusk to resolve and he is resilient to sweepers.
dude can i see your list? maybe i could still improve my deck...i was thinking adding staff of nin because i saw 1 playing in azorius control and it was cool...and btw dude where did you get your sig?
Nephalia is surprisingly good in any control mirror. It can win you the game without you spending any cards to do so, enabling you to sit back and profit.
btw guys about cyclonic rift what are your thoughts about it im thinking adding 1 on my deck(i got lucky got 1 from a booster :D)...so hmm any thoughts
Chaam, I like your list, what are your thoughts on Angel of Serenity? Also I notice you have no Think Twice/Alchemy. Are you relying entirely on revelation/walkers for your draw engine?
Have there been games that drownyard has helped out a lot chaam? I'm curious about the late game mill options
Ya, the 2 maindeck drownyard give you a plan B vs control game 1, and when you bump up to 27 lands they are your plan A, a lot of times i side out 3 jace 4.0 for jace 3.0. jace 4.0 is just ok vs control he is great vs aggro and midrange.
Honestly, the only reason to play esper atm is Drownyard, souls, and sorins. I dont really want any more of a splash than that.
I really like your lists, and maining the feelings did feel wrong to me, but I played your previous list and it has been testing really well. Revelation I have always kept as a 2 of so glad to see you think the same.
How do you tend to sideboard against aggro?
Thanks. I did main deck 2 dreads as they were awesome every game, but I'm liking this list without them a bit more. Yea 2 revelations + 2 snaps is just crazy good.
Depending on what kind of aggro deck im against, i usually side in the 3 dreads and verdict + terminus. giving me a million ways to slow them down before 4 mana + 7 sweepers. I usually take out some counterspells, a revelation, possibly a snap or two, if its a green deck with rancor i tend to take out a sorin and souls maybe 2.
btw guys about cyclonic rift what are your thoughts about it im thinking adding 1 on my deck(i got lucky got 1 from a booster :D)...so hmm any thoughts
I used to love it as a miser in the deck, but after testing without it im not going to put it back in. a 4th souls, a 3rd sorin, 2nd revelation, an extra counterspell are all better than having it.
Chaam, I like your list, what are your thoughts on Angel of Serenity? Also I notice you have no Think Twice/Alchemy. Are you relying entirely on revelation/walkers for your draw engine?
Thanks. I really hate that card in this deck, especially when the only creatures im running are 2 snaps. I would run drogskol reaver before I ran her, and i wont be running reaver anytime soon.
Ya the deck has enough draw with 2 revelations into 2 snap revelation, 4 jaces, and the 2 tamiyo draw you so many cards even with 1 souls. (I dont ult her very often as using her -2 is very relevant when you run souls + sorin). I dont think the think twice do enough for a deck like this, but I could see merit in forbidden alchemy as a 2 of or something. Im currently happy with the draw engine though
btw guys about cyclonic rift what are your thoughts about it im thinking adding 1 on my deck(i got lucky got 1 from a booster :D)...so hmm any thoughts
Use it. It's a 90% win with Tamiyo's emblem. (unless synco-ed or dissipated)
In fact it's still good without emblem
Instant speed one sided board wrath is always great. It actually on par with terminus (with different purposes) when hardcasted
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.
I went 2-3 tonight, with essentially the same list as above, except I do not have entreat the angels. I think I want to run them though. I am new to playing control.
How do you go about beating aggro decks? What do you side in? My issue was not being able to stabilize fast enough. The games I lost were: 1-2 to mono red, 1-2 Mono white humans(this deck was very fast, it surprised me) and last was a UW control deck, that I just misplayed against.

Sideboarding strategy i consider (in my list, MB-ed 3 curse of death's hold + 3 Fod, +4 syncopate):
-2 Dissipate
-2 Staff on nin
-2 Syncopate
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.
I had Entreats for awhile and took them out. Most times they were too clunky, just because playing them at sorcery speed sucks. I just use Lingering Souls, Sorin to win, and occasionally drownyard. I'm def playing a more tapout approach more recently anymore. I only play a pair of dissipates mainboard. Too much draw-go seems awkward, since I want to be playing planeswalkers/sweepers/lingering souls often. I also took out all copies of Scmage. I went from 3,2,1, to no Scmages. I just don't play enough cheap spells ot make him profitable. I was on the other Esper Control thread, because I made some changes, and my deck performed much better. The first thing I tried was playing 4 copies of Sphinx's Revelations. I always had 2 and loved seeing the card, and a friend of mine had been playing 3. I watched him chain SRev's at times, which was totally backbreaking. So, I added a third, and last night added a fourth for kicks. I was worried I'd draw them early and theyd sit there. I was wrong, as I used them all the time. It also allowed me to use cards more often (Tapout style) and easily refill my hand with SRev's/Jace and keep on trucking. I'd just keep playing cards and then refilling. SRev's can really push a game out of reach fast. I can't praise Lingering Souls and Sorin enough. Once you start dropping spirits/vampire tokens and Sorin Emblems, thats alot of pressure. Sometimes you get those woops I Miracled a Terminus plus a am able to play a Planeswalker/LSouls the same turn powerplays.
I tried various counterspell conigurations, but have come back to tapout. I really just wanted a couple of dissipates, as they are relevant from turn three onward and the exile clause is relevant. Syncopate just isn't where I want to be, ever. I don't want to be holding counters up on turn 3 etc. I want to play Lingering Souls/Liliana/DSphere. By turn four I really need to sweep, or play Jace. Turn 5 Tamiyo etc. They're is no way I can keep countermana open often enough and not fall behind. Late game Dissipate for a hard counter, sure because it protects my position. The only time I leave mana open is for UPrice/ACharm for the most part, or if I am wary and want to Dissipate something. Turn 6 foward for SRev, but by that time Ive done some serious work and need the refill.
I think Esper Control has alot of awesome tools. When gatecrash comes out it can only get better.
so last night I made 1 minor change to my sb since control is showing up a lot more. Its a saucy little card that won me counter wars by not even haveing to have them and drawing cards anytime they cast sphinx rev or think twice and such.
so last night I made 1 minor change to my sb since control is showing up a lot more. Its a saucy little card that won me counter wars by not even haveing to have them and drawing cards anytime they cast sphinx rev or think twice and such.
Everyone seems to have so much success with this deck! I guess I just need to pilot it better haha!
I do like it though, it is a fun deck to play. My easiest but longest match was Bant Control.
I am running 4 Jaces, 2 sorins, 2 Tamiyo. Not sure if I should cut a jace for another Sorin? I think I might also try Entreat.
Yes, Esper really needs extremely careful and patient play, because it (so far i know) doesn't have an aggressive finisher, like red in american control do. But, once we dominate, is really hard for opponent to turn the tide.
I personally prefer 2 Tamiyo + 3 Jace 3.0 MB in my recent list(yes 3.0 one ;))
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.
I just need more play time with the deck. My local shop is having a standard tournament on monday. I wont be able to make FNM that friday though. I got all of the cards I need for the deck, I just need a few cards to finish the SB, but I'm cool with the guys at my shop, and last friday they let me borrow 8-10 cards I needed that I didn't have at the time.
I think I might move feeling of dread to the SB, add another Jace, Memory Adept to the SB, and try running 2 Entreat the Angels in the deck. This is what I'm thinking about running for tomorrow.
Does syncopate really help much? I can see 1-2 Dissipate for late game, but a more tapout approach seems better. Most turns you'd rather be playing stuff than holding up counter mana. Most instants will be azorius charms, uprice and late game SRevs. I found when I focused on a more proactive game plan and less countermagic I had a better game overall. Alot of problem cards can be handled with board control or planeswalkers. I know it sounds weird, but I don't think more than a couple dissipates and some sideboard negates is a good idea in today's control decks. If you ditched syncopate, thats 3 slots for more proactive solutions.
If I were to ditch the syncopates, I would add 1-2 more Dissipates. Syncopate has kind of let me down, it helps early game, or against aggro when the tapout to throw down one of their "bigger" threats. But late game, dissipate is the better card in my opinion.
So, assuming I drop the syncopate(which I have been considering), and have 2 open slots. What do you recommend?
Razefire : There are two builds floating around right now : Tapout and Drawgo. Theirs are more Drawgo, playing on their opponent's turns and always keeping mana open. Mine is more Tapout (did you post yours?). It's different playstyles. Most pros and amateurs alike tend to prefer the Drawgo version, though, for what it's worth. I prefer the Tapout version for the pressure it keeps, but I think it really depends on the meta.
i'll try to buy entreat the angels next month(Christmas time :D)
entreat is really a threat yeah problem is if it is in my opening hand i need to mulligan and also if it breaks out at turn 3 i cant miracle it -_-...ill play test my deck with proxies and ill give my analysis on friday....
oh yeah btw guys off topic Q: how to make my foil cards flattened i just brought foil lands and my problem is it curves any ideas guys?

I always keep at 3 lands and 4 good spells, or 4-5 lands and 2 moderate spells.
Intangible Virtue makes u a token deck, not a control deck with token as win con. That's 2 different things.
