This deck idea was born out of a comment made as a joke at FNM, but as we talked about it I began to wonder if this deck could actually be remotely playable. Obviously you aren't going to top 8 a GP with this deck, but I am legitimately curious if anyone thinks that you could show up and successfully troll an FNM. So, without further ado, here is what I am calling "Counters Tribal."
The concept behind this deck, I believe, is fairly simple: you counter things that your opponent tries to play. And I mean all the things. This deck is basically nothing but counter spells and draw spells. The only ways this deck has to win are milling the opponent with Sphinx's Tutelage, and, to a lesser extent, eventually burning your opponent out using Keranos, God of Storms. In the event that your own deck begins to get a little thin, Learn from the Past can be used to recycle all of your counter and draw spells, and begin the process all over again.
The sideboard is obviously geared toward dealing with aggro matchups, as that should be the one matchup against which this deck should most obviously fall on its face. Lightning Strike is included for spot removal while Anger of the Gods and Displacement Wave are there to serve as sweepers. I am a little torn as to whether I would rather use Displacement Wave or Ætherspouts as the fourth sweeper, as the instant speed of Ætherspouts is extremely appealing. I believe, however, that the ability to bounce non-attacking creatures, as well as any other troublesome permanent is more desirable in this slot. The rest of the sideboard is geared toward optimizing my control matchup. Nullify is obviously bad in this scenario, and would be swapped out in favor of Negate, and while Neutralizing Blast is still not a bad card, it would be swapped out in favor of the much more optimal Gainsay.
Obviously, I am looking for input as to how viable this deck could actually be. Do you think that I could have some laughs with it at an FNM? Or should I just give up and try to jam Sphinx's Tutelage into a more viable control shell? I am very much unsure about my current decision to run just 22 lands. I figure that because most of the spells I actually care about casting on curve top out at 3 cmc coupled with the fact that nearly all the spells in this deck are instants, I SHOULD be able to get away with running fewer lands. However, considering the fact that my actual mana curve tops out at 5 cmc and that Fascination is best used when I have a lot of mana to invest, I am wondering if I should perhaps up the land count a bit. I had initially included 24 lands, but ended up cutting some of them to trim the deck down to 60 cards. Additionally, considering that my deck is almost entirely blue, I have considered cutting a couple of islands and swiftwater cliffs for a playset of Mage-Ring Network so I can save any extra mana I have at the end of my opponent's turn for a particularly ridiculous Fascination. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Of course, any and all suggestions, input, and feedback are appreciated!
whelming wave isn't a bad one if your looking for bounce all creatures. there is a monoblue deck that someguy made a deck tech for on youtube he calls monoblue fog.
