I run a 'chordboard' of seven chord targets for varios matchups.
Reclamation Sage - Comes in against any deck with problematic/multiple artifacts and/or enchantments
Hornet Nest - Great chord target when the opponent has big beaters with no evasion
Pharika, God of Affliction - Eats creatures to shut down Whip of Erebos, Ojutai's Command, Deathmist Raptor, and important creatures against Rally the Ancestors.
Nylea's Disciple - The life gain is very important against Mono-Red. If you manage to flip Liliana, recurring Disciple back is huge.
Erebos, God of the Dead - Shutting down decks with potentially huge amounts of lifegain. If you can get this out early against GW Constellation or Mardu, it's much easier to ignore them and combo out Shamans. Try to save any Reclamation Sages in hand to deal with Banishing Light, as that's often one of the only ways those decks can really interact with it (Constellation tends to side out Dromoka's Command from what I've seen of the matchup)
Archangel of Tithes - Useful against any decks that try to go wide. Helps push through combat damage if you're on the aggro plan.
Whisperwood Elemental - If you can chord for this in response to Languish or Crux of Fate, you'll probably win the game, especially if they tapped out for it.
Gnarlroot Trapper is necessary. Having a mana dork turn 1 is crucial to this deck's gameplan, so we need the full playset of both. Yes, it sucks we can't cast non-Elf creatures with him, but the best opening line is usually turn two - mana dork into turn two - one drop (preferably another mana dork) and Dwynen's Elite. That acceleration allows you to chord for almost any creature in the deck starting on turn 3, barring Whisperwood Elemental post-board.
Last FNM I kept some match notes for the first two rounds. My dad called to tell me my grandfather died after round two, so I was out of it and not really playing well the rest of the night.
Round 1 - Sultai Control
Game 1 - I kept a one lander and developed a decent board with mana dorks before he Languished it all away.\
Game 2 - I Thoughtseize turn 4 and see 2 Negate, Languish, Den Protector, Swamp, and a fetch. I take Languish and kill him with creatures and a Shaman trigger two turns later.
Game 3 - I Thoughtseize on turn 3 and see Dissolve, Dig, and Tasigur. I take the counter and starting filling the board. A second Thoughtseize take his Dig and leaves him in topdeck mode. I swing to put him to 6, giving him a Sultai Charm from a Tasigur activation with only 2 lands untapped in the process, then show him the Shaman in my hand.
Round 2 - GW Constellation
Game 1 - I build a decent board and get damage in with aggro beats and Shamans, but I can't keep up with the life gain from Courser and Herald. Sigil hits the field and I don't have Chord, Company, or Rec Sage in hand, so I scoop.
Game 2 - He durdles without Herald or Eidolon, and I drop Sorin turn 4. He finds a Herald, but chording for Shaman at his end step, then untapping and dropping Shaman before swinging out with Sorin's +1 ends the game.
Game 3 - I get him down to 11, the chord for Erebos. He has double Courser and a Herald in play. Oops. He gets 3 Eidolons on field, but right before he starts to combo out with enchantments, I cast Dromoka's to put a counter on a Shaman and fight his Herald. He goes through about a quarter of his deck before he finds Banishing Light, but he only has 2 mana and no Herald in play. Next turn I drop a Visionary into Rec Sage to get back a Shaman that had been Silkwrapped, which puts him to 3, and swing out.
This deck I found which is based on a top placing deck. I tested it out online and it's doing great. Try it out and see how fun it is to drop a Liliana and only attack with Shaman, etc. Collected Company is also an allstar on the end step.
I also tried hangarback walker and it didn't work out. i always found myself side boarding them out for more control. Sylvan messenger is the bomb, I played an abzan deck and the messenger kept filling my hand with elves after a languish. I play with one whisperwood, so whenever someone board wipes, i cord for the whisperwood, then manifest from the number of creatures that were killed.
Have you played against Tragic Arrogance yet? That card ate me for lunch... cost me a very winnable match.
No FNM from me this week, so instead I spent an hour updating my signature.

I'm curious, has anyone messed around with assault formation? Seems good with the 1/2 elf and Dwynen. Also makes siege rhino more beastly if you are playing junk and splashing rhinos
Temur Sabertooth is ok but can be clunky and just....extra.
Despite the fact that I am playing Ray Tautic's Abzan Rally because it wins 99% of the time I love elves and played elf rally and went 3-1 at my last standard. It is fun rally back elves but its also just begging for a long game. I think the best cards in this deck are Chord of Calling.
Something I struggle with is the paradox between collected company and sylvan messenger however both deserve their place. Need to come back from a board wipe? Sylvan Messenger. Need to rip a quick block or hopefully 2 shaman of the pack at once(which I have, and it was good)? Collected Company.
Liliana, heretical healer is the recursion that we want with a tad bit of lifegain we lack. It also lets you swing clear with shaman of the pack they do not want you resurrecting him.
I've also found that ultimate price is very good considering the state of planeswalkers right now.
Hello guys. I was recently pulled in into elves after taking a look at my origins collection. Anyway, I'm just trying to put together with this set of cards I have. Kindly take a look.
The concept of the list is to go wide with the elves (hence the 12 1-drops), summon shaman, bounce, repeat. Shriek and might are there to help close out the game. I'm not so sure about anticipate but I'm thinking that slot should be a card that will help pull out key pieces for the sequence above. The land base could be better but I don't have the cards I need to improve it right now.
Havent been able to bring it to FNM yet since I still need to pick up a couple cards but in testing this has done really well. I went for Aggro main with a Midrange sideboard.

Since there's still a month to go before Elvish Mystic rotates out, there's not much sense in playing Leaf Gilders over them... once you get past the terrible art, they're vastly superior. Also, I suggest using something in the sideboard that exiles rather than destroys, because that way you can deal with opposing Hangarback Walkers. I like the idea of plummet against Dragons though.

If I'm going to run Nissa in this deck, how many do I want? My rule of thumb is to never run more than 3 copies of a Legendary in any given 60 card deck. I've seen some run 4 and some run 1. Which is optimal?

Played it tonight at FNM, subbing Lilly for Nissa since I had a Lilly but no Nissa yet, and traded the Revelation and one of the Obliterations since I couldnt get a 2nd in time for 2 Back to Nature ( I have GW constellation in my meta) and ended up going 3-1 (2-0 UB Mill/Control, 2-1 Naya Dragons, 0-2 WUBR goodstuff control, 2-0 Mardu something) during prelim rounds vs, making top 4 (beating the UB Mill/Control 2-1)and split top 2 (was WUBR good stuff again). Sided out the Winnowers and 2 Messengers for Wounds and Volleys vs the Mill deck as it was running Hangerbacks and the Winnowers for the Plummets vs Dragons. Goodstuff was creatureless so no siding needed and the Mardu got mana screwed both games so I never really saw what was in it to worry bout siding. MVP of every game was Shaman, dude was a beast.
Mystics are def the better card but when I built it I was thinking about longevity since rotation is so soon. If anything though I would probably cut the Trappers for them though as the elf clause on that mana dork can be a pain when I need to cast Bellower or CoCo.
@alpagprime 1-2 is good as Nissa is one of the more difficult to activate flip walkers and she generally ends up as a win more card. Now Lilly on the other hand after playing her tonight I might wanna try to fit 3 in as she is just so good and really easy to flip but draws hate quick due to the life link and the bringing friends when she flips.
Did you guys see the spoiler lands? They aren't green and black, and Rosewater had said that there won't be any fetch lands. I'm not quite sure if we can rely on Evolving Wilds alone?
I'm probably getting ahead of myself though. Do you guys see Elves being relevant post rotation?

Yes, I saw the spoilers of the lands, I love them but I do agree with you. I rely on the pain lands and evolving wilds. What does everyone think about the spoilers so far? I haven't really seen anything that will benefit us after rotation but it's too early to call it.
Well we don't lose pain Lands as they were printed in origins. You're correct in saying we lose the temples. We also lose chord of calling and Elvish Mystic. I'm trying out a different list right now that will lose a lot more than that. It includes Nykthos x3 with 1 Temur Sabretooth 1 Nylea's Disciple 1 Whisperwood and a few other 1 ofs to chord for. I also use 3 Chord and 4 Company. This version will lose a lot more. But the usual version will only lose the temples, Chord and mystics. Without help from BFZ no I don't think that the deck is very viable. Especially in the face of a bunch of Eldrazi.
Went 3-1 in standings (bye, 0-2 vs Mardu, 2-1 vs Abzan, 2-0 vs Mardu) made top 4 (2-1 vs WUBR goodstuff control) and split Top 2)
Messenger being sideboarded out almost every game. 3 of is just too many, Between not being able to be fetched with Bellower, not being a legal choice for CoCo and it being a over costed Visionary every time it landed I feel that cutting it either down or completely out is the best move right now. Probably gunna add in Mystics for now and see how that fairs as the mana base being at 20 has been a bit clunky, especially with the Elf creature clause on Trapper.
Went 4-1 in last nights FNM (took 2nd place). Shaman of the Pack, Nissa, Vastwood Seer and Collected Company were the MVPs of the night. Most of the games went 3rd match, with sideboards becoming more and more important. Being aggressive worked well in most matches and the only issue I have noticed was a lack of card draws since you can empty your hand rather quickly. Hopefully BFZ can help with that.
Round Breakdown
Round 1 VS UB Mill.
Match 1: Won, death done via the power of Collected Company. Did get milled quite a bit.
Match 2: Loss. Oppoenent sided in Lanquish and some counterspells. Could not get ahead. Sphinx's Tutelage is evil!
Match 2: Won. Sided out some cards (forgot what) for Naturalize and Back to Nature.
Round 2 VS Azban Aggro
Match 1: Loss. Mana issues. Mulled to 6 and could not get lands.Fleecemane Lion and Warden of the First Tree ate my elves.
Match 2: Loss. Mana screwed to no end. Mulled to 4 and conceded after 4 turns of no lands.
Round 3 VS Azban Outlast/Bolster
Match 1: Won. The elves came out fighting.
Match 2: Loss. I got cocky and did a bad play (played Collected Company in response to declare of Attack phase before attackers were chosen. bah!)
Match 3: Won. Sided in creature hate. Had Nissa come out and play, repeatedly. Flipped every time. At some point I will get her Ultimate off.
Round 5 RU Direct Damage
Match 1: Won but it was one hell of a fight. He managed to keep the elves in check and the lovely Shaman of the Pack and Nissa, Vastwood Seer were the stars of that match.
Match 2: Loss by epic plays. Pyromancer's Goggles and Crater Claws getting copied melted my face after getting softened by Ugin, the Spirit Dragon,
Match 3: Won. Went to time as well. It was filled with epic plays and Collected Company helped get the victory. Sided in Gaea's Revenge and got both out and they kept Ugin in check.
Overall very happy with this build. Nissa, Vastwood Seer is freaking great for the deck and she constantly kept coming out and often getting flipped in longer matches. Using her 2nd ability often got me a good chump blocker and made Nissa a good target. Managorger Hydra was rarely seen and given its great performance in the previous incarnation of the deck I was disappointed (ran this on GameDay few weeks ago and went 2-2).
Dear Painland.
You said that Nissa Vastwood Seer constantly flipped. You need 7 lands to flip her. You play 20 lands. When i do the math it will take a while before you get 7 lands in play.
Here is my math
Youd need 7 lands in play. Thats 35% from all the lands you have.
So you have to draw 35% of your deck to get them. Thats 35% x 60=21 cards.
On turn 13/14 you have drawn 21 cards. There is some acceleration (Visionary/Nissa).
So i wonder if it was that easy to flip Nissa.
There, edited my first post since writing with a migraine can muddle thoughts.
In my area the meta is very variable on speed. She flipped at least 8 times in 6 matches in the drawn out bouts and usually I get her 2nd ability off before she is targeted and destroyed. One game was fun when Collected Company snagged me a Nissa and a Shaman of the Pack while a Planeswalker Nissa was in play. Granted the Shaman was the killing blow it was just fun to get 2 sides of Nissa out.
This is the list I'm currently running. Went 4-1 at FNM and the in loss was to the 1st place person. Here's a brief run down:
Round 1 vs Abzan Control
Game 1: He had a slow draw and couldn't keep up. As soon as I got Nykthos going, I was off to the races.
Game 2: He dropped a Fleecmane on turn 2 into Courser into Sorin into Rhino into Elspeth when I was sitting on 3 lands. I put up a fight but it really wasn't that close.
Game 3: went to turns and he got me on turn 5. He got another Elspeth down and Sorin late in the game which turned it in his favour. Definitely a winnable match up and game 1 it really isn't that close. Post board it feels like I'm a very slight dog.
Round 2 vs Abzan Control (no Sorin)
Game 1: He was stuck on 3 lands all game and it really wasn't even close. He had Languish and Tragic Arrogance in his hand while I flooded the board and eventually companied into 2 Shamans.
Game 2: I once again flooded the board and he languished. In response I Chorded for Whisperwood and sacrificed in response to the languish. My 7 Manifest Tokens took it from there.
Round 3 vs GB elves
Game 1: I mulligan to 5 and kept a slow hand. I was dead in board for 5 straight turns sitting at 3 life if she attacked with everything. Instead she allowed me to stabilize the board and I eventually won. I really don't know how this happened.
Game 2: went to turns and I won the round 1-0. Not what I would expect from the mirror. In Game 2 I had her at 1 life while I was sitting at 25 when it ended. Just couldn't get that last point through.
Round 4 vs Abzan Midrange
Game 1: I again flood the board and he languished. I chord for Whisperwood and win from there.
Game 2: He mulligans to 5 and it wasn't close.
Round 5 vs BG Pact
Round 1: Again flood the board and get devotion to 12 and go off from there bouncing Shamans and replaying them for the kill.
Game 2: He as well falls for the Languish into Whisperwood trap but eventually loses to his pact that can't be removed.
I'm loving this build of it and the reason for the Sideboard like it is, is because of Heroic. This deck gets completely crushed by them without even getting going.
Is Honored Hierarch even a remotely viable replacement for the soon-to-be-rotating Mystic? I really don't want to have to resort to stupid Leaf Gilder.
As for Friday, I went 1-1-2 drawing my last two rounds, both against Esper Dragons. I hate that deck.

If you're looking for a mana dork, it may be able to produce mana on turn 3. However depending on the speed of the format, he may only be a 1/1 that does nothing. it is also not an elf and would not have the same synergy that Leaf Gilder does. I don't know why there's so much hate for the Gilder. He's always done well for me and if I need to go an aggro route a 2/1 all the time is something that I prefer.

Some other options for the sideboard are Agent of Erebos, Gilt-Leaf Winnower, Temur Sabertooth, Fate Unraveler, Doomwake Giant, and the fourth Sylvan Messenger.
Sunblade Elf has been very good. His pump is relevant, and the one Plains isn't really an issue. Combined with Dwynen, Gilf-Leaf Daen, the pump can save a fair bit of your board from Drown in Sorrow and Anger of the Gods.
Round 4 VS Enchantment Aggro
Cant remember this match to well. Went 2-1. Back to Nature shined. Collected Company and Chord of Calling shined.
The Family

I'll have fun with it while it lasts.
