i was flipping thru cards, moving m14 stuff to the old box in ready for m15 to take its place and i ran across a card i hadnt noticed before. Corrupt. its a 6 cost sorcery that deals damage to a creature or player equal to the number of swamps you control, then you gain that much life. so im wondering, why doesnt mono black play this as a 1 or 2 of? it lines up perfectly with grey merchent on turn 5 then this on turn 6. its 6 cost yeah but how many decks play six cost cards? everything but aggro, some even play 7 cost cards. so why hasnt this one card seen more play?
It's too terrible as an overcosted, sorcery speed removal spell and gray merchant has an extremely similar effect for 1 less mana and a body attached to it
well im looking past the target creature part and more on the doing damage to your opponent part. playing that deck uses your life total as a resource so much, having another way to replenish that resource plus still doing damage to your oppenent seems good. especially against control
Mutavault dampers the impact of Corrupt for MBD. In the average game, 2 Mutavaults by T6 is not uncommon, so doing what equates to a 6-cmc Sorcery Warleader's Helix isn't that exciting. Most importantly, tapping out for it usually doesn't leave you enough mana to sit back on a Hero's Downfall or other kill spells. Overall, Corrupt's just too costly and inconsistent for MBD to abuse.
very true but you could easily just use it when youll win with it. turn 8 or 9 is a good average turn when mono black can win. by then youve most likely dropped a connections, some 3 or 4 cost creature, and atleast one merchant, maybe two, so then corrupt on turn 8 or 9 could be a win, possibly without even having to go into combat
Actually, no, most decks in this format do not play six-drops. Even the ramp deck (G/R/x Monsters) doesn't play six-drops. U/W/x Control decks play Elspeth or Ætherling, because they're control, and because those cards are extremely powerful and win the game on their own.
Corrupt doesn't put two devotion on the board for Erebos nor is it a 2/4 creature who can attack/block. And the difference between five and six mana is massive. Of course, you can only play four copies of Gary, but I'm not sure the deck even wants a fifth or sixth copy. Right now, it plays only four four-drops and four five-drops. Adding a six-drop that is just a worse version of your six-drop doesn't seem to make sense for a deck that is already built on efficiency.
Urborg would make it a bit more useful, but still not enough to make it used. I've built interesting 5 color control decks using only swamps (swamps plus the swamp based shocks for splash) which abused Liliana of the Dark Realms fairly nicely, but it was in no way competitive. But of course, when I won FNM's with it, hilarity ensued. Thus far that's the only viable use of Corrupt.
Corrupt is a great card but it doesn't work well with devotion. I'm not sure if Tendrils of Corruption would be good with Devotion. I hope that black can get away from devotion at some point and return to a more traditional MBC style deck.
Mono Black DEVOTION runs too many non-swamp cards for the card to be viable. Rather, the deck cares more about controlling the battlefield and maintaining devotion to black for cards like Erebos and Gray Merchant. Plus, Gray Merchant does well at gaining life, dealing damage, and acting as a blocker.

Corrupt would more of a mono black control type thing, I think. Devotion is meant to generate just that, devotion. In any case, I suppose I could see a budget version, all swamps with a higher kill spell count mono black "devotion" running corrupt butthe corrupt bit is a bit on the slow side and isn't nearly worth the cutting of the nonbasic lands, nor is it good in the complete shell in comparison to gary. It is especially worth noting that gary is a stabilizing aid in more than one way. Corrupt would only stabilize by life.
