Hey all! New to the forums. I just started playing MtG a couple months ago again after a long time and currently have been only buying cards used in standard so I could potentially enter tournaments one day. The thing is, I have no idea if my deck is good. It's pretty much a "rogue" deck but I've completely crushed everyone else that I've played it against. Before entering a tournament, I'd like some help.
I have gotten all of this stuff from boosters/trading and have yet to buy any single cards. I also just got Elspeth in a booster and want to stick her in but not quite sure where. Any advice/criticism is welcomed! Thanks guys!
Welcome back to Magic!! Orzhov is loads of fun with some pretty nasty tricks.
I'm not much of a deck-building expert, but lands are always a solid investment...Godless Shrine if/when they're within your budget. I would even consider two more Temple Of Silence, but I'm a big fan of scry right now.
No offense intended, but you may want to read up about formatting your posts and all that good stuff to make it easier for folks to take a look at the cards.
What were these decks that you "completely crushed"? I can't see this deck beating any competitive deck consistently.
Just whatever decks my friends had. I couldn't really tell you any specifics. I know my deck isn't amazing cause there's not a very clear theme (but rather a couple separate ones) but I figured I talk to you guys on how to make it competitive. I'm willing to make changes, obviously.
Edit: I understand it's not competitive level, but I'm at the point where I beat all my casual player friends with no problem so I need to move onto higher skill stuff.
^Thank you for that reply. Lots of good info. Usually when I play, I like to use the several different bestows to get one or two really big creatures vigiliance/lifelink/intimidate/etc. Is that a viable strategy? Or would it be better to just pick one or two of those and get 4 of each?
I also thought about doing an Erebos's Emissary/Nighthowler combo with a bunch of kill cards like more Doomblades and Hero's Downfalls. Thoughts?
Edit: And what do you guys think of Erebos? He seems like the worst of the gods to me, but I like the card draw a lot.
If you're gonna go creature killer, Celestial Flare is a definite consideration.
Not a personal fan of Erebos (I like his whip better)...if you're looking for card advantage/devotion boost, Underworld Connections is a consideration.
Basically, you want your cards to work well together so they can do what they do to win the game for you. That being said...as long as you're having fun playing what you want, that's all that really matters.
Erebos is often not amazing (and yes, the whip is better) but if you have it, you can make use of it with the help of alms beast (a 6/6 for 4 with no drawback if you have erebos out) and the whip (which lets you draw with erebos without killing yourself on account of all the life gain.)
If you want something casual and offbeat, you could always do some sort of bestow base using a lot of enchantments, some ethereal armor, and so on.
But since you're new, don't get godless shrines unless you really decide you like the game and want to hunk out some extra cash for the long haul. After all, they are nearly 10 bucks a pop.
Maybe somthing like this. This is a little more aggroish, you can probably increase the curve by taking out fabled and hoplight and putting in bloodbarons/removal/elspeth.
How does this look? I really wanted to keep some randomness in it which is why the higher cost (Elspeth, Obzedat, LotV) only have 1 of each. I also tried to keep it relatively cheap without spending buckets of money (I'll wait on the Godless Shrine).
The agents go along nicely will the whole "kill card" idea. If I lose just 1 alseid and 1 spear, wouldn't that make my deck a whole lot less consistent?
Here's what I'm running:
Alms Beast x1
Cavern Lampad x1
Agent of the Fates x3
Hopeful Eidolon x2
Erebos's Emissary x2
Celestial Archon x2
Abhorrent Overlord x2
Dutiful Thrull x1

Observant Alseid x2
High Priest of Penance x1

Edit: Made the cards clickable as suggested.

Nighthowler x4
Vizkopa Guildmage x2
Hopeful Eidolon x4
Agent of the Fates x4

Elspeth, Sun's Champion x1
Doom blade x4

Ordeal of Heliod x4
Mark of the Vampire x4
Gift of Immortality x1
Edit: Perhaps I should stick in two Whip of Erebos in place of the Mark of the Vampire?
And maybe trade two Hero's Downfall for two Celestial Flare? That way I have the planeswalker killer, and my kills aren't all based on black mana.
I think you should run a heroic themed deck if you like the bestow mechanic.
