Lost to mono red aggro twice tonight. On cell phone bso list is a pain to type. What can we do about peak eruption? Got taken out by it in games 2 and 3 both matches.
How was peak eruption that decisive? Not really one of my top concerns when going against rdw so far, and there are a lot of them.
on the play game 2, he turn 3 and turn 4 peak me stopping me from wiping his board with anger of the gods. 2 turns in a row.
I decided to speed my list up a bit and lower the curve. I will post both lists. lower curve list is still untested but there were 6 RDWs out of 20 people at my Local magic store tonight. I can only imagine it is just as bad at large events.
Have you tried Frostburn Weird? I have had a lot of success with him against most decks. He is in range of a couple more burn spells than ember swallower but he can do just as much damage and can be played the turn before the reckoner instead of after.
Sorry I haven't been particularly active here, but this is the busiest time of year for me at work so I haven't been slinging much cardboard to contribute much.
@Menace: I would personally -1 Shock and +1 Chandra just to help shore up game 1 vs Midrange/Control as you look to be doing fairly well against WW/RDW. Either way the new list looks much better.
I don't really have any epiphanies to share with this deck, but I thought you guys might be interested that this is what I'm taking to Pro Tour Theros in Dublin next week. I'll let you all know how I do over 10 rounds of standard... assuming I make day 2.
Alright boys, help me tear this deck apart. I have been shadowing this thread since it was in new card discussion. I'm not great with specific numbers on how many lands to run, copies of each card, etc; but the general idea here is a much more white-based midrange designed to abuse vigilance to block Gx decks and swing over blockers with Ajani / Madcap.
The only real pet card in here is Fabled Hero, I really want to give him a try. Without flat out telling me the red versions are better (which I fully understand they most likely are,) can anyone help me tune this?
I have tested against mono red only thus far. Works well though! They have a very tough time with Paladin, especially with a Madcap Skills on him. I'm not a great deckbuilder though, would love it if some of you guys would clean this up a bit.

It doesn't look like a bad starting point. If it were mine I would quickly take out Heliod, I still do not care for him in these decks, then replace Brave the Elements and chained with more burn. I would also strongly look at how many 3 drops you are running, you have 13 in the main fighting for that spot. I think fabled hero and ajani are your weak links here.
Perhaps I should pull some of those 3-drop copies for a 1 or 2 mana creature? Soldier of the Pantheon and Imposing Sovereign have both seemed desirable. Soldier's ability to laugh at Cackler among others seems good.

While I understand the drive to test pet cards, I can't imagine running Fabled Hero in a list with only 4 cards that can target him, and 2 that you probably don't normally want to target him with since it grants an ability that he already has and would be 2 mana and a card just for a +1/+1 counter. As much as you like him, either play more things that can target him (I'm a fan of Madcap Skills, though you're asking to get 2 for 1'd), or play something else in the slot. I think your mana can support Chandra's Phoenix and it's a really good card.
That doesn't really fix the problem of having another 3cmc creature though. I still like Frostburn Weird, you could also try ember swallower if you want something slower and bigger. But if you're looking for something white I really do not know how I feel about those cards. They seem like magma jet fodder to me, then you're just back to trying to hold them off with your 3 drops because you won't be able to race them. They belong in white weenie decks, not midrange. You could try hundred-handed one to stay in white. He's big and can get bigger and he would also help activate Heliod, God of The Sun if you want to keep him.
playing multiple reckoners then anger of the gods is cool. Against aggro decks they just let you attack them then you and hit then for a total of 6 to 12! Sexy move! If you have legions initiative then they survive!
Direct damage removal makes is less bad against control.
Really cant wait to get it assembled.

I don't like the scion or legions initiative in the main board. I think ember swallower is a better creature (4 mana and a better butt) and better effects. I also think 2 more burn or pyromaster would be better than legions initiative. Mr. Hammer should also probably be something else too since he has usually done nothing or is win more once you stabalize with elspeth. I could see him as a 2 of in the sideboard for maze ends decks which I am sure will pick up in popularity after the pro tour. Just my 2 cents.
Went 4 rounds at fnm tonight. Beat rdw then Gruul. Then lost twice to naya, I need to find a way around that deck. Especially after they sideboard in glare of heresy .
Match 1: 2-0 against a G/W homebrew
First game he couldn't draw a land with 3 on the board. Turned Ember Swallower monstrous and that was that. I really like Nykthos with that card. Even if the game went longer, I felt safe after saccing my lands with all the devotion from the deck.
Match 2: 2-1 against RDW
I was able to stall him game 1 with a Reckoner and then a dragon and phoenix won the game. He took game 2 on the play. Game 3 dragged a bit longer with a Weird and Ember Swallower holding it down until I played Aurelia. She ate a mortars pretty quick but the attack was worth it. Probably going to move her to the sideboard or just cut her all together. The game was over when I played my 7th land with him on 4. Ember Swallower is a house. Never drew Anger of the Gods
Match 3: 2-1 against Esper Control
He took the first game after pretty much answering everything I played. Double Blind Obedience extorted me to death with an Aetherling out lol.
Sided in 2 Doctor P for game 2 and was able to play him pretty early and followed up with a T7 Elspeth. I didn't get to wake the god, but triggers from the soldier tokens did him in.
I got some early damage in during Game 3 with a phoenix and drew really well (he didn't). I was able to resolve a dragon on T5 and made him a monster a couple turns later after he played a Divination with no Supreme Verdict. He didn't draw a Revelation the whole match
Match 4: 1-2 against B/G Midrange
He took the first game with a Desecration Demon after putting a Whip on the board. I chained the Demon and next turn I played Dragon and swung while he had mana open. Abrupt Decay on my chains and then killed my dragon with his Demon. Whoops!
In Game 2 a Demon arrived on T4 and was followed up with a Reaper of the Wilds next turn. I ended up saccing 2 Weirds and a Phoenix to stop his demon until I was able to resolve an Elspeth. Initial tokens slowed him down and then I wiped his creatures with her. He played another but was shut down by tokens and I won with an opportune Phoenix attack, burn and a bunch of tokens.
Game 3 I flooded aside from the Reckoner and Chandra from my opening hand and a few burn spells I drew. He had two underworld connections out before playing a T5 (surprise!) Demon. Chandra couldn't keep up with his card draw, and was only popping more lands anyway. No scry in sight that game.
- Chandra is awesome. I wanted her out every game. I didn't mention her much above, but she really keeps this deck going and works very well with scry.
- I was hesitant on Purphoros, but decided to keep him in the side. I only got to play him once an wasn't able to wake him up, but there were plenty of times where he would have been active on the board. This deck can get to the devotion really easily.
- Nykthos was better than I expected and really shows its strength with an Ember Swallower. I think running this over Mutavault is the right move, especially with the Weirds and Reckoners in this deck. I would rather be able to consistently play them early and take advantage of their cost to pump Nykthos and monstrous Swallowers and Dragons.
I played against a Dega Midrange deck afterwards for fun and lost, again to a Demon. Without an Elspeth on the board, that card rips this deck apart. I'll definitely be adding another Chained to the Rocks, likely instead of the Aurelia. I could probably drop to 25 lands as well if she doesn't have a place in the main.
I had limited testing before tonight, but I'm really happy with the way the deck plays and had a lot of fun with it despite a few misplays (especially in the last match). I've been following this thread for the past week and a half or so, but am sure I missed some good posts. My apologies if a lot of this is repetition and has already been answered/discussed!

I would make some room in your sideboard for pithing needle. It is a strong card vs all control matchups and stops eatherling and their planes walkers.

I could probably drop the 2 Purphoros. There were times where he could have been active and helped out, but overall I didn't really feel he was necessary and kept him in the side. I didn't get a chance to play the Hammer either, so not sure if dropping it would be worth it. I put it in for the control matchups, but when I saw the 2 blind obedience in game 1 against esper there was no way I was playing it. Would be nice post verdict though.
Update to the fact that I am taking this to a Pro Tour... I'm not anymore. I really like the deck and I'm certain there's a way to to build it to shore up the weaknesses it has to a few cards, but I don't have time to figure out how. Specifically, the weaknesses I've found are that certain midrange creatures are incredibly hard to deal with (Reaper of the Wild and Obzy come to mind). Not impossible, but easily hard enough that they can take over a game before I can find my answer. Then the other control decks just seem to have a better top end. Without real pressure, Sphinx's Revelation out of UW or Esper is just the nuts. Jace is also a real issue since they can deal with the bigger guys without too much problem, so his +1 is incredibly relevant vs the token horde we can create. Sure we have Needle for Jace and Renounce the Guilds for the other creatures I mentioned and Reaper dies to Elspeth (but if they play smart, nothing else), but those colors have answers to our answers that are main deckable (Whip after a Renounce, Sphere on Needle) so they don't even have to dip into their SB and they all play more card advantage than we do (UW obviously, the black decks in Read the Bones, and our one CA engine can be answered where we have nothing for theirs).
I don't want to sound all negative, the deck runs over the aggro decks. Pretty sure I can count on one hand my losses to Rx Deck Wins and GW combined, but the other midrange and the control lists make up too big a portion of the metagame to take this to a Pro Tour without solving those issues, and I just don't have time to figure it out.
So yeah, Fabled Hero didn't work out. Breaks my heart, but he is just bad. I cut him for a pair of Precinct Captains and one Scion. I tried out Hundred-Handed One as well, and he works; he might even end up taking Scion's place. Also, Shrine to Nyx is a house with all this white devotion. Still unsure if I am going to be able to stop a Mono-Red swarm hand, need to test further.
One more week until Montana states!

I tried out Hundred-Handed One as well, and he works; he might even end up taking Scion's place. Also, Shrine to Nyx is a house with all this white devotion. Still unsure if I am going to be able to stop a Mono-Red swarm hand, need to test further.
One more week until Montana states!
