hey everyone,
after posting the individual card thread about domni rade, i just wanted to make a thread about sideboard options for the naya blitz deck. i feel that blitz is still very well positioned, but on the draw it relies heavily on getting full value out of its sideboard cards to make up for the slow start. but first i went to talk about the main 60 as a setup to diving into the sideboard
while i know there are a few variations, i think it's rather safe to say naya blitx has this core
some might disagree, but i believe spell heavy decks like hexproof, bant and esper control, merican flash, etc make thalia a must MB, and that means spells need to be cut back. i like frontline medic, but i like a 1 of malcontent because it forces my opponents to play around him, he grows experiment the same way as frontline, and he's slightly easier to cast off of BTE. i like ghor-clan as a 1 of for the same reason, and because he doesnt coast the extra mana from thalia since he's a creature affect.
as far as the sear to growth ratio, the argument can be made, but with the resurgence of rwu flash and the fact its one mana vs 2, i feel growth was the way to go. vampire nighthawk is one of the few cards that will make me eat those words...
moving on to sideboard options
thalia, guardian of thraben -i feel like she's the sure thing. between your MB and SB their better be 3 copies of her, and the only reason she's not a 4 of is because she's legendary
boros charm - a good multi-purpose card. i run a 3 of, some like 4
gruul charm - like mirror matchups, but i wasnt getting much value out of him so i cut him. aristocrats might make me regret that
pacifism - good for bant not hexproof (lulz) but seriously this guy shuts down thragy, reckoner, and a few other very strong cards. i have a 2 of
fiend hunter - has seen a great deal of sideboard play, a human with 3 toughness so he evolves champ and experiment in the spot. good in aggro and midrange matchups. I run 3, to trade off with frontline
ray of revelation - with the resurgance of bant hexproof, this card he's been seen a lot of sideboard action. other uses include deadbridge chant, detention sphere, and assemble the legion
pillar of flame - voice, strangleroot, he has his uses, i just really worry about having to many spells in the deck. the spear should fill this spot very well
boros reckoner - i get it, he's awesome. great for trading in aggro and blitz matchups. but he HATES cavern of souls.. and bte. personally i just can't do it, but to each their own.
madcap skills - gene richtsmeier is currently into the semi's of the SCG open running 3 madcap skills MB. is this a new card to replace growth and rancor? does that extra affect throw off blocking enough to get the win?
traitorous instincts - madcap skills, and a few others, pretty much a card that finishes the job. along with it are a few cards like azorious arrester for the mirror matchups. personally i dont want to waste too many cards on the mirror, because if your on the play you should be fine anyway, so really your filling up your SB with cards for half a matchup.
for those of you have been counted, you may notice i named most of my sideboard and then stop. for those of you that havent, i understand that your probably dont care, but i've only named 12. that's because the last three are a card i found last night and am very excited over
splinterfright
t1 they burn your champion. t2 the y burn your emissary.... it goes on and on until you get about 6 creatures in the graveyard and that UWR player has the smug look on his face and then BAM! 6/6 with trample that should grow every turn. and that smile goes to a frown... and i beat american flash 2-0 on the back of this guy game 2. seriously, if you havent, check him out. let me know if i'm completely insane
thats all i have, i just feel like the sideboard is the most important part about blitz because it lets us survive through changing meta's. let me know if you think i've missed something or disagree with some of my statements here.
his original purpose was for UWR and GWR flash decks. he also works well with jund, and esper/Bant control matchups. the one worry with bant is that if they sweep with terminous instead of verdict he's no good. jund usually boards in any mortars and bonfires they have. im also going to test him against the beefier aggro deck. I feel he gives us the option to be more aggression even though we may lose some of are smaller creatures in aggro matchups, as lon gas they dont catch on to what we're doing.

20 lands (you know the drill here)
4 boros elite
4 experiment one
4 champion of the parish
4 burning-tree emissary
4 lightning mauler
4 mayor of averbruck
4 flinthoof boar
that leaves us with 12 other slots, which get filled by non creature spells and a few other complementing creatures and humans. personally i run
2 thalia, guardian of thraben
3 frontline medic
1 kessig malcontents (shoutout to john milner)
2 searing spear
3 giant growth
1 ghor-clan rampager
