What are your guys' thoughts on this build. Was thinking of building something that will survive after rotation and can be competitive in standard.

i would say not enough instants or sorceries for young pyromancer ...

We have yet to see a single card from Theros.

So basically your deck is RTR block + M14.

mono red is loosing

Theros is honestly needed. in M14 was limited cards that would work ...

True more burn would be ideal. And yes after Theros is out I would like to make the changes necessary. Burning earth is definitely something I'm interested in sideboarding at least. Mindsparker as well.

Legion loyalist can fit, Ash Zealot will still be around and is a must.

I'd run 4x Chandra's Phoenix, 4x Ash Zealot and get ride of the Firefist Stalkers.

Hard to say what spells to add, we won't know until Theros cards are unveiled

I like ash zealot but not being able to cast it off of burning-tree kinda put me off. But it might be too good of a card not to play.

to me its better then burning tree .. because of the haste and first strike

He can keep burning tree as well, get rid of the Firefist ones, they arent that good for a two drop.

Don't need 24 lands either in a mono colored deck. I would run 21-22. Maybe 18 mountains and 3-4 mutavaults.

if you want the young pyromancer in, then you want creatures with batallion effects to make the best out of the tokens
Also, more creatures to play with BTE and as said above, 17-18mountains 4 mutavaults

Consider dynacharge

Here's what I've got assembled currently for post-rotation pre-Theros:



Sideboard is still in flux and the main probably wants Mutavault somewhere. I can't decide if I want Phoenix or Reckoner main. Also, Burning Earth might not be worth it if there aren't that many 3+ color decks running around.

Here's hoping Theros brings us another 3 damage burn spell, because Annihilating Fire is awful. I could see Lightning Bolt or Volcanic Hammer getting the reprint since they kind of fit in flavor wise...

My suggestions, 3 Mutavaults, Madcap skills to combo with Burning tree, Rubblebelt Maaka is great, definately Firefist striker, Mizzium mortars and Boros reckoners.

i also would say 3 mutavaults.. 18 + 3
with ash zealot, boros reckoner and phoenix 4 multavaults might be a problem


you guys think that dynacharge could take the hellrider spot (role spot)? i mean, with the overload you could hit rly hard out of nowhere..

RDW is in an awkward spot because the deck and the variants all lose key cards. Without Theros there really isn't a clue as to what state the decks will be in. With the loss of Hellrider and Falkenrath Aristocrat RDW, GruulDW, and RakdosDW/Dos Rakis arein a tough spot.

RakdosDW looks the strongest in comparison to the other versions at least in regards a 4 drop spot being filled in Exava, The Blood Witch.



That's a rough list.

All of these are decent burn


But nothing compares to the value of Brimstone Volley.

Pyrewild Shaman is also more suited to a midrange build. If we were really discussing viable 3 drops then Reckoner and Phoenix is pretty much miles ahead of virtually anything else.

With the exception of shock do we have any other cheap burn available to us? I should say direct damage. The RDW usually archtype plays 22-24 creatures and the rest burn that can clear the way or go to the dome. Is annihaliating fire and flames of the firebrand where we want to be?

RDW needs more cheap burn spells as in 1 mana or less to run efficiently, which has to come form Theros.

If it costs 1 its good
If it cost 2 it better be great
If it costs 3 it better be amazing
If it costs 4 it doesn't fit in the deck

So do we need to splash a color like black to have more kill spells to clear the way? ie : doom blade or dreadbore?

That makes sense Larry, and the only other "cheap" removal spell is massive raid but that card is very situational. Can this deck survive after rotation without bombs like hellrider and thundermaw hellkite? Its looking like it is going to be tough.

RDW has been the, de facto deck to beat in RTR block for nearly it's entire run. Trust me, red mages will find a way.

Looks like the red mages just got a boost! Magma jet was just spolied! Thats a huge card for this deck.

Agreed, it should be noted that it works both ways though. Having your guy removed and them scrying into their next answer is equally huge.
