So I've been out of the game for 2 years now, having quit around the release of M12, and after some egging on by friends (and after watching TONS of pro-tour games) I've decided to come back. I've already gotten my EDH deck but standard seems to be the new hotness on the block, so I decided to have at it.
I built the deck mostly out of cards I like, but the idea is aggro when I need it and a wee bit of control when the aggro stalls. It's a little bit all over the place and I'm sure it could use some work. (Hence why I'm here :D)
I don't plan to enter competitive play, but I'd like to have a deck that makes you double take, at the very least. I'm trying to avoid cards from Innistrad, hence why I've avoided stuff like Sulfur Falls. When it comes to cost, I'd like to keep it in the range it's currently in (whatever that may be, I'm terribly sorry for not checking), as I'm a little strapped for cash, though going up or down by $10 or so wouldn't kill.
Thanks for looking, and any and all advice is much appreciated!
Looks interesting and creative. I wonder about mana concerns. 22 land seems low for a controlly deck with no card draw before Sphinx's Revelation and Niv-Mizzet. Basically you are going to run out of mana at 3 or 4 and then be waiting for topdecked land, I fear.
12 white sources doesn't seem enough to reliably cast Supreme Verdict.
11 red sources seems like Niv-Mizzet could be difficult. Overloading Mizzium Mortars doesn't seem likely.
Your creatures seem really cool, but not particularly aggressive to me. The Reckoners are OP'd, but otherwise it looks like the Goblin Electromancer is the only one on-curve. The rest are better blockers. I don't see how the aggro can work. The Aetherling is a great control finisher, but you may be dead long before you can cast it.
Playing control seems like you would want to invest in snapcasters, which don't fit your budget.
I agree that it is all over the place. I would pick your favorite card or set of similar cards and try to build around it. If you like Reckoner, find cards that will work with it.
You're right. Right now, your deck is trying to do too much. You are playing enough creatures for an aggro deck, but its set upt like you want to be a control deck. I think you should choose one opton or the other:plan to be an aggro deckorplan to be a control deck. In these color options, tempo is probably how you want to go, but that is a bit more expensive. Personally, since you already have a lot of the expensive control staples, the cheapest option would be to go full control. You can get some more ideas from the American Control Primer.
RealOG47 beat me to it. Check out the American Control Primer thread. It has a bunch of decklists of URW control.
As for your deck, it's playing too many creatures to be considered control. The usual URW Control lists play 3-5 creatures, being any combination of AEtherling and Snapcaster Mage. Some control lists play Augur of Bolas as an addition, but I'm not a fan of him anymore. If you can't afford Snapcaster Mage, Augur of Bolas could be an okay substitute.
Also, as a control deck it's okay to have a diverse amount of spells to always have answers for something. Which means it's usually okay to play spells as 1's or 2 ofs instead of a bunch of 4 ofs.
As for staying away from the Innistrad Dual lands, I'd expect to see some type of dual lands either reprinted or new ones in the M14 format. So I'd look out for them.
Here's my decklist for reference. I'd really recommend looking at that thread as there are a lot of decklists on there and a lot of helpful tips.
What he said ^. But also if you are unsure which list to build off the primer, as far as the control version not midrange, I've actually pretty much stolen RavenJason's list above when he posted it a while ago. Its really really good and has been amazing for me.
