Come rotation blue will be number one again. I see many lists with Jace, architect of thought, Supreme Verdict, Sphinx Revelation, Far Away, and Aetherling.
Seriously?
Someone starts a "this is dead" discussion every freaking two weeks I swear.
Give it a bit and I'm sure blue will be popular again, since that's all it is with this standard - a popularity contest. Which is good, it means that standard is healthy enough to have decks coming and going and not cawblading. Make a blue deck since really it can be considered "rogue" now that it's not a popular color. Use Aetherling and counterspells and you'll be fine.
tl;dr Blue isn't dead... shut up, stop whining, and play magic.
edit: and black is splashed quite a bit in decks. Just because it's not on TCG or SCG doesn't mean anything.
Have you looked at block? Its red aggro vs UW control for over 50% of the meta, grixis control is also on the rise. Black gets splashed everywhere while green based midrange is the one in the corner lol.
The standard format will change and a new color will dominate.
It's been a while since Green has been as dominant as it has been. Sets will rotate out and that gives potential for blue to come back. Or perhaps another color.
I don't really understand the fervor over blue being underrepresented in tournaments. If you want to play Esper or UWR... those are both feasible decks to play, even if the results don't reflect that. If you are just looking to net deck winners, then just play Jund or Junk. If you are one of those players that only plays UW/x control every format, you can still do that... but you just won't win as often.
It's just not feasible for WoTC to balance all the colors in every format at all times. There will be periods of time where certain colors dominate.
I certainly hope not, I love blue! Especially the color. So, here it is! Yay!
That said, I'm really surprised this is a thought process, I think Esper Control has blue in it, as does UWR Midrange, or even Azorius Control for block... Sphinx's Revelation is the most valuable card from RTR, not that value speaks volumes, but there it is.

Blue has been struggling for a while. It's not "dead" per se but it's clearly the weakest color currently. This will likely change, which is why I say it's a great time to be buying those Jace AoTs and Verdicts.
I wish Blue would be less powerful in Legacy and Vintage with Brainstorm, Daze, Force of Will, Counterbalance, Jace TMS, Show and Tell, Mental Misstep (yeah I know Vintage), 3 pure Blue in the power nine, and much more. In Standard lets not forget how good Supreme Verdict, Snapcaster, and Sphrinx is. Aetherling and Invisible Stalker can also be really annoying to deal with. Azorious Charm isnt bad either.
I think Blue in general just gets over shadowed a bit by other colors because of the dominance by Thragtusk, Angel of Serenity, Deathrite Shaman, Restoration Angel, Boros Reckoner, Huntmaster of the Fells, Unburial Rites and others.......................
However, despite Blue not as strong now its not dead. Red has a huge grip with M14 and they will be hurt more by the rotation (barring whatever Theros has) as Red loses much more good and useful cards like Huntmaster of the Fells, Olivia Varden, Stromkirk Noble, Falkenrath Aristocrat, Searing Spear (not a great but very useful card), Hellrider, Lightning Mauler, Brimstone Volley, Thundermaw Hellkite, Bonfire of the Dammed, Volcanic Strength, Traitorous Blood, Pillar of Flame (yeah I know Shock), Blasphemous Act....................
I think Mono Blue decks arent that good in Standard now as versus Mono other colors but Blue is more a combo/sprinkle/splash color in the current format.

Yeah, I'm with you.
Blue is very under powered right now, but people implying that blue will never be dominant again don't know how Standard works. And when you look at DGM and see Aetherling, Turn//Burn, Far//Away... blue is going to be solid again soon. We'll probably have to wait for Inn to rotate because the only thing good in blue from that block was Snapcaster.
I can't help but think that blue is positioned for a huge comeback right now. There are 2 silence effects in the format now and tons of interesting mill effects in standard if you look at esper. I don't usually do this kind of a deck and so my ideas are only half-baked but I would be really surprised if you can't make something work with what's available right now.

Yup, standard is very cyclical. I also agree that we're probably going to have to wait till post Theros as I don't think M14 propels Control as much as ISD block hinders it right now.
My confidence in blue rebounding is pretty high really; all signs are pointing in that direction. At the very least, there's no where to go but up. Ultimately, I hope I'm correct because I don't foresee myself ever using Jace, Verdict, Aetherling and etc. A blue mage I am not.
Anyone remember the insane boredom otherwise known as a Nether Spirit mirror match?
I think they're just scared of printing cards that will result in a meta full of boring, drawn out games against permission decks.

Snapcaster is also likely the main reason blue is also so weak. For fear of heavy Snapcaster abuse of blue card draw and counterspells, they have had to shy away from printing them. Most of the cards Snapcaster abuses are other colors.

Yeah. And also, you notice that they wait until basically the tail end of the block to print Aetherling, which is really the only decent blue control creature they had. And they were able to print stuff like Far/Away and Turn/Burn... but the design of those cards weren't that exploitable by snapcaster, because he could only copy one half of the card.
I'm not really that excited to see control come back. I'm kind of a midrange/beatdown type of guy. But it's really looking like Aetherling is going to be this block's Olivia. Olivia when it came out was like a 3 dollar card, and then Jund blew up and it's been a 10-15 dollar card ever since.

Ceiling wise, it's hard to straight up compare Aetherling to Olivia seeing as how it's a rare and will also likely only see play as a 2-of but I do expect it to see a bump in price post rotation.
Blue is definitely weak right now. If it weren't for Sphinx's Revelation being an absurd card and the format's best sweeper being partially blue it would probably be close to unplayable. Those two cards provide enough of an incentive to play blue in current Standard though.
UWR plays blue and UWR is a top tier deck.
Jund/Junk can't function without black.
I don't see the problem here.
Well, "Top deck" is kind of a stretch. I think Bant Hexproof has had more success, and even that deck is probably 4th-5th on the list of decks with the most success in major tournaments recently. UWR and Esper to a degree are both part of that 10-12 group of decks that are somewhat popular in the metagame. So those decks are relevant, but I wouldn't say "Top deck" because at no point in the past couple of months has UWR had a bunch of solid showings at tournaments the same way Jund and Junk have consistently done.
Try to remove an Aetherling before you say blue is dead.
Minor appearance in major events doesn't sign blue's death. But once it dominates, it dominates the whole events (see last season of standard - UW Delver).
Blue will never die, because the only color that will find it's way in every circumstances is blue (forgive my blue player side arrogance). A bit off topic, but to be honest, I think the reason that magic the gathering is different to another TCG is the presence of blue color pie characteristic.
Post rotation signs the emergence of blue control deck (Aetherling) though
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.

Cards with Black in their costs: 33 (4 in top 20)
White: 34 (8 in top 20)
Green: 32 (7 in top 20)
Red: 29 (10 in top 20)
Blue: 19 (1 in top 20)
Black is pretty bad too but at least you can make a tier 2 deck with it.
Keep in mind this is right after Esper's "resurgence".
Thoughts?

Jace, Architect of Thought seems to get plenty of play, I just... Supreme Verdict, too, and Azorius Charm... I don't see it? I don't get you? @_@
