Anyone else watching this? It seems a bit more interesting without Jund-Junk-Jund-Junk-Jund-Junk.
It will be interesting to see how the new Dragon's Maze cards pan out - Sire of Insanity, Voice of Resurgence, Unflinching Courage, Advent of the Wurm, and others.

I'm curious to see how Dragons Maze impacts things too. Been watching a few matches, the Aristocrats game was really painful though, a lot of misplays including forgetting to play his land which could have potentially saved him.
Watching the Junk tokens game now which is kinda interesting.
Edit: Same game with the Aristocrats, he chump blocks two attacking creatures with a cartel and soul token (one each), and DOESNT sac the token to keep his cartel alive... just let's them both die Obviously the soul token didn't kill anything either, so missing the sac effect was pretty bad.

Yeah, that Aristocrats game was painful to watch. I just didn't want to say anything because people here are going to jump on the quality of SCG Open players.
I feel that even if there are many subpar players, to win any tournament that has 200 or more players is really something. I think that most of us can admit that we need to tighten up our own play.

Oh absolutely agree. It's also easy for me to criticize a player when Im not on camera in a big tournament. But some of those misplays were incredibly obvious at the same time.
And yes, winning any tournament with this many players is a good accomplishment.

I think a lot of people here are pretty overly critical of the players. It's pretty easy to look over someone's shoulder from an outside perspective and notice mistakes. If you're (example, not directed at anyone specifically) a player who plays magic online rather than playing much IRL, then there is a lot more to focus on in paper magic than there is online as well. You actually have to remember triggers, physically track yours, and your opponent's life totals and there are people and distractions everywhere. Not to mention you're actually sitting across from someone who can physically look at you and vice versa.
that said, I think junk tokens is a strong archetype that has some good opportunity to break out. I think junk reanimator and jund are strictly better, but it makes a fine tier 2 deck.
I also think that bant hexproof is very strong even if it's inconsistent. Same goes for naya blitz. I think the only reason they aren't Tier 1 right now is because they are under played, more than likely because people are afraid of their variance in a 9 round competition.

Big thanks to DarkNightCavalier from heroes of the planes studios for the sig!
Don't hate on Todd. He's there since Osyp missed his flight, and he's not awful. He knows the cards, knows what he's talking about. Usually.
Still, this week is more interesting due to the availability of the DGM cards being (obviously) better. We're starting to see some actual variety. About time.

Yeah there is variety but most of these junk tokens deck are kind of crap :/
Am I the only one thoroughly impressed with that Bant control deck? Sadly, I'm not so sure how it would fare against junk reanimator though.
Probably not the only one? I am not impressed with Bant though. I play tested Prime Bant in hope that I could finally play Control in Standard again. After about 100 play tested games, I scrapped that idea. I haven't looked at Yim's deck list though.
Honestly, Bant Flash a la Matt Costa, seems much better although I understand that each deck has it's weaknesses and strengths.

Two jund players, both failing to realize that a dragonskull summit wasn't a blood crypt. wtf. The guy deserves to have his hand shown for not catching it, cause I'm sure as hell not showing mine without being sure it's legal. This is FNM stuff.
How the heck do "good" players mess up on Pillaring the Spirit so the Elemental from Voice dies?
Missed this, what scenario are you talking about? Pillaring a Voice to keep the token from coming into play or are you thinking about something else, like killing a Voice when it's the only other creature to kill the token? The latter doesn't work.
From the matches they've been covering at the later rounds (6 and onwards) there seems to be a prevalence of Jund and Junk Reanimator (go figure). Once we see Standings for the top 32 we can get a clearer picture, but so far it looks like Midrange is still the King of Standard.

It was the token from VOR itself with 2 lingering souls tokens. The VOR token blocked took damage, and then pillar was cast upon it killing it. He could of pillared a lingering soul token and the VOR token would of shrunk to a 2/2 after combat and died from dmg taken during combat
Im sure anyone complaining about the play mistakes have made similar mistakes at some point. Who ever said they were good players? Its an open, exactly as the title says its open to everyone. Its not the PT where you actually have to qualify.

Very glad you cleared that up for us - we are all back on track now, thanks.
I've seen some Naya Blitz and some Bant decks of different kinds.
A deck I'd personally love to see more of is Aristocrats Act 2. It would be wonderful to see how a really good player plays the deck.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing the deck I personally play, Gr Aggro. I'm not sure why this deck is not played more.
