Interesting. I find that virtually any time I drop a 2nd turn troll, it's toast before my next turn (in some cases unless I'm willing to discard 2-3 cards). I've tended to treat them more as a 3-drop. With an Arbor Elf on the board, I'll also play a T2 Geist + Rancor / Tracker over a Mangler. I feel like the only time Geist is clogging my hand is in the rare situation where I have T1 Arbor, and T2 nothing to play but the choice between solo Geist drop or Predator Ooze. Wolfir Avenger, on the other hand, seemed to always clog my hand unless I could chuck him to a Troll.
That said, I'm still very tempted to give Grisly a shot. I feel like it helps find Nighthawks or removal against aggro, and extra threats against control. In this case, Geist would probably the lowest on my list of creature picks, and has no impact in the graveyard aside from Deathrite (which again favors your list more).
Have you ever thought about Treasured Find? It has a ton of synergy with Grisly, and the troll. Too bad it's not an instant!
PS -- Funny that you mention splashing a 3rd color. I'm tinkering with a Gruul deck on the side, so I already acquired the manabase for G/R and have strongly been considering more of a haste-geared version that splashes red for Falkenrath Aristocrat. Sure would cover our issue in the sky! Problem is, there's not much more I think I care to add MB other than Aristocrat, everything else I can think of more belongs SB, like Rakdos Return, Slaughtergames, Skullcrack, Gruul charm (> crushing vines?).
Grisly Salvage wouldn't actually put the removal in your hand, unless you consider a creature card as removal. That aside, if you are thinking about Jund colored aggro deck, you should check out the thread that I started in the Deck Creation area. Wasn't really thinking about pursuing the deck, but shortly after it placed at the SCG events. Red adds Burning-Tree Emissary, Flinthoof Boar, burn spells, Kessing Wolf Run, among other things.
About the Lotleth Troll, I usually find that I do discard creatures to him to keep him on the board because he can take out anything they play, period. I love casting him turn three with Deathrite Shaman in play with Evolving Wilds somewhere, because opponents always try to kill him because they think that I have no mana sources, then Deathrite Shaman does its' thing. Put all four Deathrite Shamans in the maindeck, you will quickly finding yourself loving it, it is so versatile. In fact, I'm finding that I am building the deck with it in mind.
Shuffled around the list. Bioshift could be useful. move tokens from a ramped creature onto a trampled troll making it a x/y trample regenerate creature
Like the list, nice and streamlined, but I would try to fit in one more land if you are going all the way up to five to play Wolfir Silverheart. Also, you have 16 cards in your sideboard?
What have you played against and how has it performed for you?
Still not a fan of Garruk Relentless in this format... between Searing Spear, Boros Reckoner, Olivia Voldaren (though he might be able to bring this down for you as well though), Restoration Angel, Flinthoof Boar, etc. he just seems like a weak link for the deck. The best I usually see him being is an overcosted 2/2 Wolf Token with a prevent 3 damage to you.
I would look at something else for that slot, maybe move Yeva, Nature's Herald into the deck from the sideboard, and we can look into some other options.
Slater -- Yeah, Tracker counts as removal in my build.
I just really need to suck it up and go get a playset of Shaman's. I've only got one, and have had a lot of trouble justifying the cost to pick up any more.
I'm very curious to hear about little Garruk results as well. If you're relying on him to tutor at all, I think I'd be tempted to run more one-of utility drops -- like just 1 Silverheart, 1 Nighthawk, 1 Tracker, etc.
I think the problem I keep having is that I want to turn this into a removal heavy build with a few really persistent threats, rather than an actual aggro deck. So I keep getting conflicted builds.
What's the verdict on Strangleroot Geist? He's 2 power haste that self-recurs for 2, but usually he just gets Pillared on me, or outclasses by a Boros Reckoner or Loxodon Smiter. I'm thinking about just dropping him so I can run Deathrite Shaman mainboard in that slot.
And how many black sources do you need to be able to consistently get Nighthawk out t3/t4?

With my previous deck list in during my FNM last week I went 2-1 against RDW, I went 2-0 against GW Midrange, I went 2-1 against RB Zombies, then in top 8 I went 1-2 against Jund Midrange, and this was due to not having enough control to handle Olivia.... So I dropped the 4xRevenge of the Hunted added 3x Garruk Relentless and 1x Abrupt Decay.... Garruk could help take down Olivia and I just think Abrupt Decay is needed especially against all the decks running the Boros Reckoner or Blind Obedience . The 16 cards in sb was just a mistake there should have only been 3x Golgari Charm, which I keep for the enchantment hate and the regen against UW control (Supreme Verdict). I have thought about adding 3x Vampire Nighthawk, or possibly even 2-3x Liliana of the Veil.... But I just dont know what to take out as of right now.....
I'm really thinking of scapping this deck and going to BUG for Dimir Charm and counterspells in the sideboard. I keep losing to Terminus, and the only answer is to either counter it or try to hit it with discard.
The Esper decks that I've been running into have been running 6-8 sweepers in them, and it is hard to get them down to 0 between the sweepers, Azorius Charm, Detention Sphere, etc.

The last 3 weekly tournaments I've had to face Esper Control every time. From what I can tell, it's one of our best matches. Azorious Charm gets annoying, but essentially you just don't over-extend because the Terminus can hit at any time. Ride out 2-3 creatures and keep everything else in your hand. Try to keep mana open as well.
I feel like a red splash for Pillar, Dreadbore, and Skullcrack would be nice. Pillar kills enemy Strangleroots, and Skullcrack and Dreadbore improve the matches against Thragtusk, Sphinx Revelation, and Planeswalkers.

Between Terminus, Blind Obedience, Devour Flesh, Azorius Charm, Detention Sphere, and their planeswalkers, the deck can slow us down far better and get's around our "tough" guys, and now has a much easier time gaining life through out the game. Do you play online, because the Esper decks on MTGO are far different then what is seeing play at most local tournaments right now.
The problem that I'm coming across is that the deck tries to play like RDW, but we lack the reach, i.e. burn spells, they have and must rely on "luckier" draws. Sure, Ranger's Guile is a thing, but trust me, the Esper colored decks have changed their removal suite to make it a much harder matchup.

I'm starting to feel the same. I've been bouncing between the two all week since GTC hit MTGO, but I just feel so much more comfortable with having counters and draw, as opposed to just creatures. Though I'm liking the RUB version more because Izzet Charm is so good in this meta, but now I'm just getting off topic for this thread.
I still really love ooze, but I think it's a bit too hard to play the triple green in a three color deck. I need to do more testing with a slower version of this, running maybe Oozes, Vampires, Garruk, kind of like Jund midrange, but staying in these two colors. Need to see if there's a benefit from that.
I feel like a red splash for Pillar, Dreadbore, and Skullcrack would be nice. Pillar kills enemy Strangleroots, and Skullcrack and Dreadbore improve the matches against Thragtusk, Sphinx Revelation, and Planeswalkers.
I'm also tempted to do this as well. I think aside from Boros Reckoner, the best GTC introduced was manabase, it's making me think to splash red for what you mentioned, as well as Falkenrath Aristocrat, and possibly Slaughtergames in SB.
I also don't disagree with the blue splash ideas, but it just so happens that I already have the R/G and B/R manabase, and would need to spend more to get G/U or B/U, so I may try the other path first and see how it pans in the meta.
I just threw together a deck real quick (and I've gone a more even balance of G and B in the deck) and it's actually been pretty good. It can deal with Boros Reckoner decks, Azorius Charm and Selesnya Charm can't do anything to it, nor can Detention Sphere. Sweepers still hurt it, but alas that doesn't seem to matter overall.
I've dropped the Strangleroot Geist and Predator Ooze from the list. I will post up a list later after some more testing has been done, but early on it has been testing okay, a little over .500 right now with it, so it has a winning percentage, lol.
Went to a new shop last night to try out the deck. Had a great time, good people and I did alright. I placed right in the middle of the pack, 12th out of nearly 30. Diverse meta at the store I went to, good times.
Round 1 -- 0 - 2
Nearly a mirror match here. His was more green with a splash of black compared to mine. I had mana issues (flood and drought) both games that I couldn't recover from.
Round 2 -- 1 - 2
G/W ramp, lifegain subtheme. Dude would hit Trostani, then start dropping Armada wurms and the like. Selesnya Charm sucks. I need to correct my SB for that Charm and other control decks. Very large dudes are hard to deal with.
Round 3 -- 2 - 0
Rouge B/R Vampire/Zombie/Curse.dec I don't know what this guy was thinking. It was an interesting deck, though I blew him out the first game and didn't need to sideboard. Second game he got his curses online, and it got kind of scary. The deck was too slow and trying to do too much. But Curses? Could be a fun rogue.dec to play on the side.
Round 4 -- 2 - 0
Dimir Mill. Looked like a lot of fun, though he didn't get any threats online. Ran through him twice. He did get some good mills in and Jace out both games. Though it wasn't enough, he really needed Kraken Hatchling, Jace's Phantasm, Hover Barrier, etc to slow me down.
I feel like I could have won Round 1, but it was just bad shuffling. Round 2, no chance. Without Murder I couldn't deal with his creatures. There isn't really wasn't any time to get P. Ooze big enough to kill stuff. Appetite for Brains would have helped, along with Duress and Slip. U. Tracker is an all-star, repeatable removal. Amazing. Though maybe a one of Pit Fight or a couple in the sideboard would be good to add in. Once or twice it came up where P. Fight would have made a difference.
Garruk is a great threat, and the deathtouch tokens are relevant against Boros Reckoner.
Also my sideboard is a wreck. I couldn't find all of my playset of Guile, I only two Appetites... I think I should have played Plummet instead of Crushing Vines because it is faster. Though I didn't run into too many fliers. Also I like Tribute over Devour Flesh, because it swings the life total in my favour.
I feel like this is more appropriate. The sideboard should probably look to have more Dreadbore in it, for 4 drop hybrid/multicoloured creatures.
I really don't like the removal of Strangleroot and Predator Ooze. Strangleroot is pressure and gets in there. And Ooze is frustrating for most players to deal with. If they don't have trample, they're stonewalled. I know Knight of Infamy is pro-white, but I've tried him in here before and it gets burned every time by Spear or Pillar. White is being played with Red, and because of that we need a way around damage based removal. Ranger's Guile is probably the best bet for this; as it works on all of our creatures.
Also Slater you need to post that list with Knight of Infamy in it.
Wow -- that list is something very similar to what I was talking about putting together earlier in the thread. For me, I intend to run stomping grounds and crags instead of summits and crypts to have more of green trend. I'm running 4 geists and 4 ooze, so the G sources are way more important to me.
I really like it as a concept, because the Aristocrats give us better reach and help us where we're weak in the air. I'm not sure how I feel about Dreadbore MB. I'd probably sideboard it if using it at all. I also wonder about trying out ExpOne here. It's tough, because the one drop choices are all so good. ExpOne will evolve on everything in the entire list by the Ooze, but I'm not sure if the loss of ramp with Arbor Elf is worth it.
Also in my testing, because I'm running 4 geists and 4 ooze, Nighthawk is too inconsistent for me. Until I'm willing to dump the Geists and Ooze, and run 4 Nighthawks and go more pure midrange, he's out of my build and Essence Harvest is back in SB.
The decks are greedy for G. I just worry that there aren't enough sources available on demand, thus the shocks. Also the checklands have no interaction with Arbor Elf which is fantastic with the shocks.
Dreadbore should be tested as a 3 way split, as posted by slater. I think this gives the deck more versatility from the get go. Aristocrats do fit the subtheme of haste and indestructible creatures. Also I think the Aristocrats fill the curve nicely and solidify our position midgame. I don't think that going with a full on out midrange plan is entirely viable.
EDIT: Previously here was a stupid thing about one Demon that I mixed up with another.
Wild Beastmaster is an all-star, if left unchecked she ends games quick. This deck is fast out of the gate, but is also good in the mid and late game. Let me know what you guys think.
After a few years away, I just got back into Magic a few weeks before Gatecrash release. Golgari immediately drew my interest. After doing a few limited events to get back into the scene, I finally decided to go to Standard FNM using a deck very similar to the one Slater posted earlier: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showpost.php?p=9774541&postcount=115
In my match-ups I went up against GWB Reanimator with Craterhoof Behemoth. I lost game 1 but won the next two.
Next round was WUB Delver. Again I lost game 1 quickly to Restoration Angel and tokens, but after bringing in Crushing Vines and another Ultimate Price I managed to easily win the next two.
Third round was some UBW planeswalker deck. Like I said I'm new to Magic again and don't know all the metas, but it ran Tamiyos, Jaces, Lilianas, Supreme Verdicts, Terminus, Azorius Charms... I played to keep Lotleth Troll safe and managed to get a couple early Predator Ooze which helped carry through the planeswalkers and finish him off two games in a row.
Final round was against a Grixis graveyard deck with Duskmantle Seer, Runechanter's and Delvers. I quickly lost both matches.
I love this deck and after playing it I know some very specific changes I would make to it:
Grisly Salvage was useless every time I saw it. I would take them out completely.
Appetite For Brains was huge every time I brought it in. It helps deal with threats I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. I'd definitely run 4 in the side.
Ultimate Price was very iffy every time I saw it. Whenever I used it, it was usually underwhelming at best as far as the creature I'm taking out. Craterhoof already triggered his ability before I could use it. Many other threats were multi-colored or hybrid and I couldn't touch them. I often sided them out between matches, but I would still consider running a few in sideboard.
Ulvenwald Tracker I never found useful in any of my matches. I would take them out of the sideboard going forward.
Ranger's Guile came in very useful against nearly every deck. Bounce, burn, and even Angel of Serenity were foiled by this card. I would certainly run 4, maybe even 2 main in my meta.
Finally, the creature base seemed very well balanced. Deathrite Shaman was absolutely a beast in every game with how much graveyard manipulation every deck seems to have. Predator Ooze and Lotleth were also major players and won every game, and Vampire Nighthawk saved me in a game as well as Arbor Elf helping save hands I would otherwise consider mulligan.
I really enjoyed this deck. I want to try Essence Harvest in the main if possible. Also, I think I'll take out Devour Flesh because nearly every deck has expendable creatures on the battlefield, and I never thought it would be useful. Perhaps Murder, although the BB can sometimes be a pain. Anyways, those are my two cents and a little report on this deck in action. Thanks!
I took a version of Golgari to my local shop for the Win-a-Box Wednesday event.... ( A double elimination tournament).
In this tournament I placed sixth out of 25.
Round 1 ~~ I beat GW midrange in two games...... However game two was very tough as I had to fight my way through all four of his Thragtusks....
Round 2 ~~ I beat Boros in two games.....
Round 3 ~~ I beat Jund 2-1
Round 4 ~~ I lost to UW Control (2-1)
Round 5 ~~ I lost to RG aggro (2-1)
Im very very happy with this deck in the current format...... Both matches that I lost I was in position to win depending on a the right topdeck...... Which is now why Ive added 2x Garruk, Primal Hunter to the deck for some card draw...
Time to contribute a bit. Abrupt decay
I wish I could play 5 of them. They're that great! My list of cards I love to destroy (IN ORDER) : boros reckoner, detention sphere, vampire nighthawk, thalia, keyrunes, flipped delvers, liliana, all other green/white creatures. People use to build decks with green in it so they can fit thragtusk, now they wanna fit in red or white for boros reckoner. I must admit that the reckoner is one hell of a card.
I seem to be needing to get rid of Blind Obedience a lot too, that card in control just keeps them alive long enough to topdeck that Sphinx's Revelation or ultimate their planeswalker or whatever. I hate having rancor/mangler in hand when they are at 2 or 3 life, knowing that it will be removed if I cast it and watching their life slowly creep up.
It seems like you put a lot of time into this deck. What is your sideboarding strategy?

Sure, the idea of Snapcaster Mage and Deathrite Shaman seems like they would conflict each other, but if we find ways to fill the graveyard (Dimir Charm, Grisly Salvage, and Forbidden Alchemy do this very well) it seems like it could be a good deck, hard to say though.

Ugh, my mind is fried. I'll be back.

2x Vampire Nighthawk
2x Golgari Charm
2x Ulvenwald Tracker
2x Tormod's Crypt
I actually like this deck. A couple things I would change is drop Strangleroot Geist and Predator Ooze, add 4x Knight of Infamy and 2x Deathrite Shaman. With the ease on the mana base, I would go for one or two Kessig Wolf Runs in the deck so that you have some late game "reach".
As for the sideboard, I would switch the Garruk Relentless for Garruk, Primal Hunter because he is better against control. I would also cut the Increasing Savagery and add another Abrupt Decay and probably another Vampire Nighthawk.
What would you guys do with this decklist?

This looks really fast, and does seem to lack a midrange. 18 land seems a little greedy too. I might at least sleeve it up and test it out.
After a few years away, I just got back into Magic a few weeks before Gatecrash release. Golgari immediately drew my interest. After doing a few limited events to get back into the scene, I finally decided to go to Standard FNM using a deck very similar to the one Slater posted earlier:
http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showpost.php?p=9774541&postcount=115
I really enjoyed this deck. I want to try Essence Harvest in the main if possible. Also, I think I'll take out Devour Flesh because nearly every deck has expendable creatures on the battlefield, and I never thought it would be useful. Perhaps Murder, although the BB can sometimes be a pain. Anyways, those are my two cents and a little report on this deck in action. Thanks!
