So I'm looking at making something between the old Hoof Rites and the current Junk Rites lists. This is what I have so far. I'm running a one-off Griselbrand while I try to wrangle up some Angel of Serenitys. Big G's actually been pretty solid too, which is nice.
Couldn't Liliana of the Veil fit in the deck very well ? Discarding flashback cards and heavy creatures in your hand while muzzling your opponent seems a good idea, isn't it?
I've been auto-siding two against any non-aggro match-up. So many Midrange and Control players worry about her.
I'm playing Junk Rites this weekend at a SCG Open. I'll post my list later when I can organize my deck.
I'm really having trouble with aggro testing right now. I usually board in 3 Tragic Slip, some Blind Obedience if we're dealing with hasty creatures, and the occasional Sever the Bloodline. Feel like I'm doing something wrong, or maybe just need more Abrupt Decay.

Liliana is good, especially when you get the nut draw of T1 Arbor Elf, T2 Liliana. That said, you just give up too much synergy with the deck by playing walkers instead of creatures. After enough games I ended up dropping her from the MB and SB.
You have to consider that everytime you Salvage or Mulch her into the GY that could have been a creature to reanimate or pickup with AoS.
The decks I played were as follows:
Round 1: rando commando jund. Not really relevant. 2-0
Round 2: Jund midrange. G1 I rolled him. G2 he T3 bramblecrush me and then bonfires my mana dorks. I fall too far behind. G3 I T3 acidic slime him, bounce it, rites it, and win. 2-1
Round 3: UWR flash. I don't remember this one very well. G1 I rolled him and G2 I kept him off mana with slime. 2-0
Round 4: Jund midrange. I rolled him 2-0. G2 I won through both grafdigger's cage and ground seal.
Round 5: UWR. Same thing as round 3 pretty much. He sticks assemble the legion in G2 but I slime it immediately. 2-0
Round 6: Junk rites (2nd place deck). G1 he just drew more angel of serenity than I did. G2 I learned that acidic slime is key in this matchup. I didn't side them in and he did. He kept me off mana and rolled me over. 0-2.
Round 7: Naya midrange. I don't see any salvage, mulch or unburial rites through this entire match. G1 I won strictly through tusk/resto/healer beats. G2 I pretty much draw nothing and lose to double thundermaw. G3 I win through tusk/resto/healer beats. Turns out he sided his rest in peace out after G2 because he though I was a midrange deck, I might as well have been. 2-1
Round 8: Jund aggro (8th place deck and a friend of mine). I draw nothing but lands game 1 and no lands game 2. oh well. At least one of us made it to the top 8.
Round 9: I'm in 16th place at this point and playing to stay there. I play the mirror and win G1 simply with better draws. G2 I lose to acidic slime. G3 I win by acidic slime.
so acidic slime is an absolute house against everything but aggro. The only thing stopping me from playing 1-2 copies MD is I foresee a rise in fast aggro these next couple of weeks. Many players realize that Junk reanimator is decimating UWR and jund midrange, which is only paving the way for fast aggro to return, since junk reanimator is slightly weak to fast aggro.
obzedat was boss in the UWR matchups. They pretty much just have nothing to kill him. Generally if they do kill him then you can usually bring him back pretty easily. You should never really need to attack with him. Just let him blink in and out until they're dead.
I loved running 2 severs. They're so clutch in the mirror, being able to take out a field of spirits or mana dorks, or simply taking out their angel of serenity.
I feel like lotleth troll is far superior to centaur healer, even against fast aggro. the fact that he can trade and still stick around to block again next turn is the key thing. not to mention he makes your nut draws into early angel of serenity that much more viable. he is a little tougher on the mana however.

fast aggro is really our toughest matchup. Lingering souls are very key to providing multiple blockers against BTE draws. Personally I would see siding into a full set of lingering souls and a full set of abrupt decay and hope your draws get you there. In my list I side out 2 craterhoof, 1 angel and 1 unburial rites for 4 abrupt decay
I don't like blind obedience at all. It sets their hasty guys back a turn, but it doesn't deal with them, and the extort is generally irrelevant. It would be different if we ran sweepers, but we don't so...

How is everyone liking resto angel? I can't say I'm much of a fan of her since we can keep doing unburial on thrag against aggro?
I think having Resto in the deck gives you a little more resiliency against aggro/midrange strats. I was playtesting this deck against Gruul, and occasionally I'd get hands that were like mana dork, Centaur Healer, Resto and hands like that are just impossible to deal with for an aggro player.
I came across this link a couple days ago when I made the switch to Junk and started doing research on it. It's a deck tech from Brad Nelson when he piloted the deck a couple weeks ago at an event. I kind of like how the deck is slightly more resilient to graveyard hate because it has a lot of the same tools that mid-range decks have.
I think resto angel helps thosee games which you could not execute rite game plan .... this is very important post SB, you can just play this deck like a Junk midrange.
I love junk rite deck becoz GY hate didn't help a lot against this atrchtype.

Well... and it depends on what the hate is. Because if its Grafdigger's Cage or Ground Seal, I actually maindeck 2 Acidic Slime and can bring 1 in sideboard to deal with that. If it's Rest in Peace or Deathrite Shaman you might have a slightly bigger issue.
has anyone tried fog out of the sideboard? I'm thinking of running this at a large tournament tomorrow. I find that my hardest matchups are against fast aggro like jund and naya blitz.
How to people tend to side for control matchups? What do you put in, what do you take out?
I took this deck out for a spin at my local FNM today, and got trounced. Round one was janky UWR Control... I had the Angel loop going on and he was at 14 while I was at over 30, playing 3-4 Sphinx's Revs during the game. He swung in with Reckoner and some Angels to bring me to 27... and then Harvest Pyre for 27 won him the game. I'm sure I messed up with what I should've targeted with my AoS's, but that's just the learning curve of the deck.
Round 2 was a jank deck and a little bit of bad luck. Round 3 was a lame Grixis deck (I'm 0-2 at this point so I'm just playing bad players). Round 4 was Jund that maindecks that DRS, and some 4 and 5 drop beaters to put me on a fast clock. I still think I might've sideboarded for that deck wrong.
I've gotten in a few playtest matches against aggro and I seem to know what to do. I either win or lose. Control seems to give me issues and I think it's me and not the deck in that case.
I'm probably taking out Slimes from main for Abrupt Decay. And I know I need that 4th Resto. I think the maindeck is pretty solid, maybe Lingering Souls could get thrown in... maybe Lotleth Troll as an extra discard outlet. I've seen people side in Obzedat. I've seen Caverns sided... and I guess they would take out some mana dorks against control decks that tend to play board wipes. But I'm not completely sure what cards are best to side against control and what would be taken out in that case.

your 2 caverns and MD acidic slimes should do tons of work against control. Obzedat out of the board is also pretty boss against control. Personally I've never really had a problem with the control matchup. Maybe you could specify what cards you're having troubles with or what situations you're unsure about?

Play Sam Black's version. The trolls/LS are strictly better than Resto/Healer in this archetype unless your meta is full aggro.
I don't like sam black's version at all. I don't feel he really knows how to play the deck very well. His recent vids of him piloting the deck on SCG are just horrid.
That said I feel lotleth troll is a house in this deck, but dropping the resto angels entirely is a mistake as well. The angels really help as both flying beaters and to get extra value out of your creatures after your opponents drop something like RiP.

It's not even really that I'm having trouble with a specific card, just in general don't know what cards are good to take out against control (other than my 4 Centaur Healer). I know there are some situations where you want to side out parts of the "combo" and just go for more of a midrange deck. Maybe not necessarily the Unburial Rites themselves, but perhaps Mulch or Grisly Salvage or perhaps Mana dorks in some matchups. The aggro matchup is pretty straight forward to me, side in removal and side out things that don't help you stabilize (maybe parts of the "combo" here as well?).
From what I hear, control matchups are among the easiest, but that's what I struggled with tonight.

Against Control (assuming esper/bant) my plan would be try to craft a turn where I can one shot them with hoof. These decks have no real early threats, so you have plenty of time to set up. You don't want to overboard for these matchups because having a bunch of reactive cards rotting in your hand is just terrible.
The good thing about the Troll/LS version is you can just sit there with 4 power on the board and peck at them while you make your land drops. Any time you draw a hoof you just 25 them on the spot.

Take out the mana dorks (bad vs Verdict) and some amount of reanimation stuff. Lingering Souls also gets a lot worse; those are basically a straight swap for Abrupt Decays (for RIP/Cage). Caverns, Slimes, and Obzedats are the cards you want. You want enough graveyard interaction to threaten a Craterhoof kill, but that's just to keep them honest - you're mostly going to midrange them to death. Don't get your Rites Dissipated.
Control (especially Bant) isn't a freeroll. Esper and UWR can't really compete with our creatures' innate card advantage, but Bant has its own Tusks and often Angels of Serenity.

Well, and you don't have to use the sideboard I use... I just kind of threw that sideboard together. Is there something better than Duress and Garruk Primal Hunter to put in the sideboard? I guess Obzedat and something else.
Play Sam Black's version. The trolls/LS are strictly better than Resto/Healer in this archetype unless your meta is full aggro.
Well, yeah. The deck is just much much better. I've played both versions and it's not particularly close. It's just much much better than the other version, largely because of how much better Mulch/Grisly Salvage are and because of how powerful Lotleth Troll is. Centaur Healer is not a very good card, and you shouldn't be playing it (it's actually just worse than Loxodon Smiter). Capitalizing on Restoration Angel synergies just makes your deck worse, and it's not worth it without the synergies.

If you don't have access to SCG Premium, there is an old list on the daily deck list feature.

You have to have very real reasons for not playing this version. I'm not even sure if I want to change a card in the 75.
