Also, I lost a mirror yesterday to volcanic strength. Effictively puts guys out of burn range while unblockable ash zealout gives you the finger. Was not fun.
LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
You know, I'm really surprised at the hate Red Decks get, but I'm also getting used to it because my record is becoming so much better at FNM ^^
Stonewright is better than I anticipated. Won an entire game just pumping my Chainwalker tonight.
But for real, people got so mad when they were beat by some 'stupid, cheap' red deck. I can't count how many times people would watch a game and be like 'OH, LOL. ANGEL OF SERENITY, YOU LOSE SCRUB'.
Oh, really? Conscripts and swing for game. Or Brimstone Volley.
I love shutting up/pissing off obnoxious players. A kid with Reanimator got mad when I sided in Tormod's. He said it was a bad card. Okay
And people really don't understand the sheer amount of answers that Red has for big creatures. Oh, that's a nice 5/6 flier you have there, let me hit you with it.
EDIT: Oh, and Thundermaw should be in literally every decklist. They can have a field flooded with Angels, and all you need to do is drop a Hellkite if you're within lethal range.. Which happens more than you'd think.
okay here is my red/black aggro deck that regularly gets me 3 wins out of 4 or 5 (depending on turnout)... but wanting to step it up a notch for next events.
right now it is quick to start swinging for damage, but is weak against control once they get the mana out. it does tend to stall out against other fast enough aggro decks till i can play a wipe for their side.
However, tonight is Gameday and I know I could be facing 3 mirror matches and a Rakdos variant! There hasn't been much talk on the mirror so...
Any advice on what I need to change MD or SB for this? (I know the Tormod can go).
Do I need to bring back Brimstone Volley?
What do you think I will be seeing in my opponents SB after I stomped over them all last night? Witchbane orb?
Any help appreciated!
The mirror match comes down to removal and racing. If you can be on the play vs. another RDW, make sure that you're playing the threats if they have haste and attacking. If you have a creature in hand without haste and some burn, burn their creatures before playing yours. Think of each of the opponent's creatures as a shock that hits you every turn.
Lots of stuff will be dying, so Brimstone Volley is a nice card if you can stick a creature with 3 mana up.
Many of the RDW builds are running Pillar of Flame still, so be wary about playing an X/2 creature and not attacking with it that very same turn.
I'd probably side out the Pillars in favor of the Shred-Freaks, since they're at worst a 1-for-1 trade which draws removal or at best a repeatable shock that your opponent has to wait to deal with at sorcery speed.
I might also consider siding out the Thundermaw Hellkites for additional burn and hasty dudes. If you have 3 turns of uncontested haste/burn while he waits for Hellkite mana, he's screwed.
Sometimes I felt like I really wanted 24 lands, so might ditch a keyrune, but when I had them I was really glad I did.
Today however, due to one incredibly bad play that set up a series of unfortunate turn of events I went 2-3. All because I didn't save a Pillar of Flame for a Geralf's Messenger in round 1 against B/R zombies. Then lost to UWR tempo which is an amazing deck and 100 times more sturdy than Americles.
Then beat R/B mirror and Mono-red. Lost 5th round to B/G zombies. He had a good draw with slips for Aristocrat and I was missing a 5th land. Also a big ass Lotleth Troll.
Gonna try not to play so bad tomorrow and everything should go fine. Definitely fixing the side board though.
Pretty standard maindeck; different sideboard plans. Dreadbore is in to deal with the planeswalker based control decks; Sever is well, Sever; extra copies of maindeck removal because it might be relevant.
Instead of trying to combat Bant and UWR on their terms, I'm trying for more aggressive solutions.
Underworld Connections is completely untested but looks fun.
Some of the 1 drops might need to go for Hellhole Flailer so that I can present a more resilient curve.
So I just played a bunch of games in the MTGO Tournament practice room with Windstrider's version of the deck, sans Rakdos's Return (mtgotraders was out). It was a lot of fun. I won a good 70% of the games I played, and what I lost was definitely not the deck's fault. Falkenrath Aristocrat worked very well as either a 5th Thundermaw Hellkite or an option play. It came in handy against a GW deck where the board was pretty static and a Hellrider wouldn't have won the game. I'm wondering if it shouldn't be an even split, or cut a land for 2? It would be nice to have a choice.
Thanks man. It was a lot of fun to pilot.
While I am grateful for any amount of thanks I can get in the forum, I think you may be referring to MattT's decks in #19. I commented on his deck later, but that's not my list. I do not have 4 Hellkites in my earlier list mainly because I do not have 4 Hellkites, yet. The Aristocrat is a beating when she comes down, so I do have her as a 1-of in my list, mainly for the surprise factor.
This is the list I eventually ran at the most recent FNM. I went 3-2, which is respectable with a brand new list, but I second-guessed some of my choices for the deck before I attended, and it weakened what I was able to do. I did, however, make some very profitable trades, picking up another Hellkite, a Blood Crypt, 3 Dreadbores, and a Rakdos's Return, and some misc. other stuff like a shiny Thrill-Kill Assassin. Not bad for trading 6 cards on my part.
Round one: BGR
Game one starts incredibly strong with me dropping Ash Zealots, Knights and Cacklers on the field by turn 4. I had him down to 8 life while holding a Thundermaw Hellkite to seal the deal. I do not draw my 5th land, and he casts Rakdos's Return on me to rip the Hellkite from me on turn 6. Three Thragtusks come down one after the other, and he kills me with them because, of course, I get mana flooded after turn 6.
Game two, I put in Slaughter Games and Traitorous Blood to deal with his 'tusks, removing the Cacklers. Again, I start off strong with Ash Zealots and Knights of Infamy, knocking down his life total below 10. I pair a Stomewright with a Zealot. He casts a 'tusk, I use Traitorous Blood to steal it and beat him with it. We trade back and forth for a while before he stabilizes with another Thragtusk and burns out my creatures to eventually kill me after I run out of gas.
0-1
Round two: Zombies
I don't remember too much of this round other than losing horribly to his incredibly fast list. He floods the field with creatures, and while Zealots are excellent, they can't stop the tide. Both games go this way for me as I start off with creatures and burn, but not enough of either to do much good.
0-2
Round three: My first "winning" round as my opponent has to leave before we can play. I make some trades and play several fun games with a new player also running a BR list.
1-2
Round 4: Blue something
I have no idea what his deck was trying to do since I only saw two spells from him: Jace's Phantasm, which quickly ate a Pillar of Flame, and an Unsummon, which got a Zealot before she could attack. Turn five I kill him with 2 Ash Zealots, 1 Cackler, and a Hellrider. He tries arguing that the Hellrider did not trigger for all of my attacking creatures. I ask a judge, he rules for me, of course, and I win. Both games were absolute blowouts.
2-2
Round 5: BGW
Game one goes quickly in my favor with a Cackler, a Zealot, a Knight, and a Hellrider by turn 4. His first creature, a Vampire Knighthawk, ate a Searing Spear, and I kill him.
Game two does not go my way. After starting with almost the same opening with a Cackler, a Zealot, and a Knight, he brings in Garruk Relentless to fight my Cackler and start pooping out deathtouch wolves to stop my ground assault. The lifegain from a Thragtusk and a Nighthawk is too much for me to overcome after he Tragic Slips my Hellkite.
Game three was fun. I start with a slightly weaker group of creatures but with more burn to kill his Nighthawks. We play lands for a while, and I get a keyrune out for some extra mana, while I build up some ground stuff like an Ash Zealot paired with a Stonewright to slowly whittle away at him. I use Rakdos's Return for three. He dumps Liliana of the Veil, a Nighthawk, and a Garruk. Next turn, He drops a Sigarda, and I'm kinda nervous. In response, I drop a Hellrider, but don't attack, wanting to keep him on the defensive and hoping for a Hellkite soon. He holds back, but drops Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, who makes a vamp token. I pull a Hellkite, slam it down, burn his token with a Pillar, and attack for 16 to seal the game.
3-2, 17th of 44.
So, after a rather horrible beginning, I managed to do ok. I had a lot of fun with the deck, and when it hits, it hits hard. Ash Zealots are amazing, and people really do not like seeing them, especially on turn two. Curving into Hellrider and then Thundermaw Hellkite is brutal, but oh so satisfying, especially with Ash Zealots already on the field. The Stonewright wasn't that great, but he did prove useful in a few instances.
I am going to put Brimstone Volley back in the list and replace Devil's Play with another Rakdos's Return. Appetite for Brains will likely replace Duress.
Edit: urgh. Just noticed I posted this here rather than in the Tournament Report thread. I blame it on the lack of caffeine earlier.
I like having a little bit more instant speed interactivity in case I need to clutch kill a sublime archangel, or lotleth troll in response to regen. Then just go bigger post sb, if they have nothing important to interact with. It might be too creature light, but rakdos shred-freak was completely unimpressive when all the control ran augur of bolas. The sb will probably adjust around some more, but I think I like this for what I saw I was playing against. There was only 1 zombie player and no reanimators. Quite a bit of grixis, bant control, gw aggro, Jund, mixed with random aggro.
I'm going to play this tonight. Pillar of Flame is weak in my meta (no Zombies, lots of midrange + control) so I'm playing more haste dudes. Every creature in the deck has haste except Rakdos Cackler. Counterspells in the board to stop Thragtusk.

Nice. In the SB, Cage is better than Crypt and you don't need 4; -2 cage +1 waif, +1 flames of the firebrand.

i would love to see some captains in the list of dpaine88. too bad they have the same slot as the nighthawks which somehow suck.
need your report soon dpaine
thats the list i've been using with some pretty well results, i don't post sides because thats really a meta call. So my question is what to do for a meta of bant control and black red control? Pretty much im looking for an answer that isn't play sledgehammer?
i've been running this list for the last 3 local tournaments, i've won 2 and made 3rd on one. i think the fervant cathar is a good addition to the deck but i think that thundermaw hellkite is a better option if you have trouble to deal with blockers "thragtusk". I'm actualy able to deal with one thragtusk and some lifegain but i can't deal with 2 thragtusk, usually if they do thragtusk in one turn and another one in the next it's usually game, but also sometimes when you nutdraw you can just stomp them and by the time the thragtusk hits it's already too late

i've been running this list for the last 3 local tournaments, i've won 2 and made 3rd on one. i think the fervant cathar is a good addition to the deck but i think that thundermaw hellkite is a better option if you have trouble to deal with blockers "thragtusk".
