Gaze by itself is not enough to beat a BTE draw, just as Verdict often isn't. But our gameplan vs these decks is usually to conserve lifetotal by trading one for one with their earliest drops before stabilising with haymaker card. Since their threat density is so high, where a Thragtusk may not be enough, wiping out three plus creatures with this might just be.
I agree, but the statement that was made is that Gaze is consistent against aggro. If turn 5 is the earliest you can reasonably drop this (ok... turn 4 with Farseek, but that's not a consistent play), and you are still only killing their 1 and 2 CMC stuff. That's not good enough, Verdict by comparison comes down a turn earlier and kills everything. Perhaps against Blitz this doesn't really matter, but people still play Reckoner, Hellrider and Thundermaw Hellkite based aggro decks and you can't afford to wait until turn 6 to be able to wipe a board with Reckoner on it.
Again, not to say Bonfire is the best anti-aggro card, either, but at least against Midrange the card can result in far bigger blowouts than Gaze, which kills your own creatures.
If we're looking for a 4 drop wrath effect, we should probably be looking at Mutilate. But I wouldn't bother, I think the current plan of throwing dudes in their way and backing it up with single target removal is a solid one.
If you attempt to Return their hand and they revelate in response, it effectively blanks your card, allowing them to keep a few of their best cards in their hand. Sire turns Revelation into a bad stream of life since they will lose any advantage they get from it each and every turn.[/QUOTE]
I really like where this deck is going to be post-Maze, and it is going to see a ton of hate to compete. I expect a lot more Blood Baron of Vizkopa in The Aristocrats and Esper Control, but that would not stop me from running Jund Midrange at all.
Putrefy is the answer the deck needed to everything. Murder is now out, and Putrefy occupies a central place in the overall structure of the deck.
Sire of Insanity is actually insane, and I definitely would like to run multiple copies in the main deck with one sideboard as well.
I am still on the fence about the number of Arbor Elf in the main, I have vacillated between 2 and 3 for some time now. I went to 3 when I had Acidic Slime in the sideboard, but the Vraska plan is very different.
Thoughts on my list at the moment:
1. I hedged against Blood Baron of Vizkopa with a 2nd Mizzium Mortars in the board.
2. I would like to find room for Duress in the board to help clear the way for Sire of Insanity against Control.
3. The 3rd Putrefy in the board probably isn't good enough.
4. I still like Slaughter Games, but the time is approaching when it has completely outlived its usefulness. Still need a long-term answer to Angel of Serenity......

Very similar to where I am, the differences being:
1. I think you pick whether to run Cavern based on the week...sometimes it's a 2 of, sometimes a 0 of. Running it as a one of seems like a gamble that you'll draw it at the right times and it won't starve you of a colour at the wrong times. Better to read the metagame and play it in quantity to see it when the price is worth it?
2. I've found Abrupt Decay a bit reduced in usefulness...I like Dreadbore as a hedge against walkers while Jund aggro is willing to bring in Domri, Junk is happy to bring in Garruk Relentless and there's a new walker people will want to test.
3. Rakdos's Return and Sire compete...I come down on the side of wanting the creature so I like 2 maindeck. Not sure more than 3 of this effect is needed though in the 75, so far I've been happy to see one and make it count.
4. Duress and Liliana are both excellent ways to open up control. Former checks coast is clear, latter forces them to spend mana to answer. Both have a great chance of letting a threat resolve, the nut high being Sire.
5. Not sure Putrefy in board is the best use of a spot, it seems awkward. What matches do you bring it in for? If it's just one or two maybe a more specific tool?
Any one think Zhur-Taa Druid belongs in this deck? Repeatble 1 dmg per turn and makes it much easier to cast Huntmasters 3rd turn and Thragtusk 4th turn. Seems like a great substitute for Arbor Elf.

If he cost one mana he'd still have to compete with arbor elf because arbor elf can tap for other mana than just green
@Deadbridge Chant
It is mainly for the Midrange/Mirror/Control decks where any incremental card advantage you can receive is a positive effect for the deck. It replaces Staff of Nin.
@HandwrittenHero
1. Completely agree about Cavern of Souls -- it probably needs to be a 2x, but I need to check out the mana base before I decide which land to cut. Probably a Rootbound Crag, though....
2. I still like Abrupt Decay. I think the deck needs instant speed answers to aggro decks that like to tap out for cards that make serious threats on our turn. Putrefy helps with this, however, so I could see dropping the Abrupt Decay count to 1 for a 1x Dreadbore in the main deck.
3. If I cut the Rakdos's Return, it would be for Duress, which I think is a valuable addition.
4. Duress is going to be quite good moving forward. Taking Turn//Burn from an opposing UWR player's hand before I drop Sire of Insanity is going to be tech. I would play a 3rd Liliana of the Veil in the board, but I do not own a 3rd, and I am not going to spend $65 on one.
5. Perhaps Putrefy should be Dreadbore, but again, I value instant speed answers to threats like Angel of Serenity/Thundermaw Hellkite. Sometimes I like the extra spot removal spell. If I was to make a 2nd cut in the board for Duress, Putrefy would be it, as I mentioned in my previous post.
@Ben Delat
That is really pushing the deck to hate on certain matchups. I like your list, and I look forward to hearing your results. I would drop a Forest for the 2nd Cavern of Souls in the main deck, which should free up a sideboard slot for something else.
Your current Game 1 plan against Reanimator is...?
@RichardHaro
You have 23 lands, please say that is a typo. I believe most current Jund lists run 25.
Sire is not a maindeck card. Just accept it folks. Rakdos's Return is always a x-for-1, except when you're playing against super fast aggro. Sire on Insanity sucks against aggro almost as badly as RR, and it's also bad against BWR and Junk. It's a great card but playing three in the mainboard is just plain wrong.
Deadbridge Chant is just horrible. You guys should do some actual playtesting before posting your new decklists.
Here's my list, for what its worth.
Deadbridge Chant seems awful mainboard, though I might consider one sided.
Hedging between mained Sire and Rakdos's Return for now, as I'm not sure which one is better.
Sire seems way better against control, but slightly worse against everything else.
@Sire of Insanity
Is it the best card against aggro? Absolutely not.
Is it better than Rakdos's Return against Midrange? It's close, but I like the body. Unfortunately, it doesn't kill planeswalkers as well.
Is it better against control? Absolutely yes, if you can guarantee its success with Cavern of Souls.
That said, I already run 2x Rakdos's Return main deck before Dragon's Maze. Trading off Rakdos's Return for Sire of Insanity seems better against the field at this point in time. There are times when I will want to keep my cards in hand, however, so I could see how Return is better against Midrange when I am behind on board. In fact, my original list had a Rakdos's Return in the sideboard, and I might have to go back to that.
That said, Sire of Insanity is probably best in Dark Naya, so you can have a developed board, wipe out both hands, then live off the top with your bodies in play. Turn 1 Removal spell into Farseek into Huntmaster of the Fells into Thragtusk into Sire of Insanity seems like a beating against the majority of the format. This is better against Midrange/Control if you can guarantee the Cavern of Souls.
@Deadbridge Chant
It is not even close to a main deck card. It is sideboard at best, and I would only run it for fear of Putrefy in the mirror.
I just finished watching the latest Brad vs Gerry on SCG.com. I have to say that what everyone is saying about Sire seems to hold true. He is definitely Sideboard only material, unless your entire meta is packing Esper control or flash.
So really what Jund gained from DGM is just a strict albeit better 3cmc removal spell. Going from murder to Putrefy is all the deck really gained but the mana won't be as strained at this point with Liliana being the only double black casting costed card.
Here is my list now that I am looking to test and play at FNM.
Edit - I don't see how that helps us. I want to resolve an Olivia to control the board but I get a huntmaster. I need health but my thrag turns into a dead draw Olivia. I want to abrupt decay a no creature and I get a murder.
Sire of Insanity should be played against decks that can't create enough board-presence to combat ours and that are quaranteed to have more cards in hand at any given moment of the game (unless we're already winning). Otherwise he's gonna be more harmful to us.
Possibility Storm looks like lots of fun, but I doubt it's a good card for us.
Deadbridge Chant seems decent from the sideboard, but only against Esper. The card will get you killed super easily against UWR and Bant. It's like staff of nin that will draw you pure gas after ~5-8 turns. Countering your creature spells becomes ineffetive etc.
@Tiemuuu
I would definitely like to see Deadbridge Chant vs. the mirror, since the mirror largely revolves around board control and wiping out your opponent's hand. Dumping all of my cards into the yard with Deadbridge Chant in play just seems...bad.
@Sire of Insanity
It's not a terrible main deck card, but I could see you running 2-3 in the board instead of playing them main. I'm not sure if Rakdos's Return is strictly better than Sire of Insanity vs. the metagame, though, so I am going to continue to test Sire of Insanity in the main deck.
Edit - I don't see how that helps us. I want to resolve an Olivia to control the board but I get a huntmaster. I need health but my thrag turns into a dead draw Olivia. I want to abrupt decay a no creature and I get a murder.
You're really missing the point. You are just as likely to topdeck X creature as you are Y creature assuming both are four-ofs. This means, if you possibility storm into a different creature, it was as if you drew that one instead. Now sure, there will be times you are upset, but it will be just as often as you getting a better creature.
What the card does do is shut down control. Sphinx's is gone, azorius charm bounce is gone, and so on. All of their cards are specific on what they do, and possibility storm prevents that.
Obviously it would work better by replacing Rakdos's return with sire.
I'm not saying it's a miracle card or anything, but if landed it against Esper and maybe even UWR, I can't see how you would ever lose. It takes two oblivion rings just to remove it.
I took 9th place last night due to tiebreakers. I played Jund to a 3-0-1 finish. I played against and beat:
Orzhov lifegain. despite him having blind obedience and a tithe drinker with 3 ethereal armor enchanting it and gaining him 11 life he was not prepared for putrefy taking out his life source, allowing me to swing in with a thragtusk.
GB aggro. Very focused on scavenge. Putrefy was the allstar here. Killing a lotleth troll with out the having a chance to regen is excellent.
B/W zombies. To me the deck feels like aristocrats without the red, or reckoner, or....you know what I think Aristocrats is better. Not to sound arrogant but this match was easy.
What I drew to.
Prime Speaker Bant. This match was insane and very long and nothing really ever got accomplished.
Moving forward with the list I may try to add a cavern of souls or two in
place of basic forest. Move a bonfire to the sideboard and play Mizzium mortars number 3 in the main. It was typically more relevant than Bonfire. I am also unsure whether or not Liliana does enough at this point. Cut her for removal? Pillar of flame? More creatures? I don't know yet.
Because Reanimator is a great deck and without the seals, game one becomes incredibly hard to win vs them. With 3 bonfire main deck and a variety of other removal, I don't have trouble vs Blitz game one, unless they get the nut draw, but everyone has trouble vs Blitz nut draws.
Seems like people are dropping arbor elf like i've done.
Reading from mtgo-stats, Arbor Elf sees play in 50% - 80% of Jund decks, which is less than what it used to be, but the deck that placed 5th ran three copies mainboard and the one that got 6th ran a full playset. So don't get too excited just yet. I would like to hear the rationale from the men themselves, Owen and Reid. Why did they drop Arbor Elf?
Keeping Sire of Insanity in against Junk was certainly a mistake. It's good card againts control and flash, but Junk plays even better top-deck game than Jund does.
I'm not feeling Strangleroot Geist. It's a nice speedbump against aggro, but it gets easily outclassed against other green decks and the rest of the deck just isn't up to the speed to make him great against control. But then again, I can't argue with the statistics. The guys top-8'd so at least he isn't terri-bad.
As someone who just started playing Jund, I'm curious what everyone thinks about Liliana of the Veil in DGM lists. Reid went with one main deck and a few in the sideboard while others left her out of their 75 completely. My instinct tells me that Jund wants to move away from her and something like Garruk is a bit different because he's a great threat to have out along with Sire of Insanity. Anyways, I'll be curious to see Reid's explanation of Liliana.
We have no grave synergy to work with, we have a high quality of cards that we don't want to be discarding, our worst matchup loves to discard and has no problem giving up a dork or Spirit to a -2, its terrible against Naya blitz, the various flash decks just bring a guy in EoT and kill her. She is terrible except in the mirror and against Esper Control, and Esper feels pretty auto-win, anyway.
Liliana is good maindeck material, especially in the sense that she's good against control and pretty good against control too (she works a bit like Tribute to Hunger) and good against niche cards like Ooze and Geist of st. Traft. But because Junk and BRW are seeing playing and especially Junk being wildly popular, her stock value is a lot worse right now. It's debatable whether she's good enough, and definitely a pure meta call.
I agree, but the statement that was made is that Gaze is consistent against aggro. If turn 5 is the earliest you can reasonably drop this (ok... turn 4 with Farseek, but that's not a consistent play), and you are still only killing their 1 and 2 CMC stuff.
