The list I was running before seemed very powerful but I was losing very close game 3's more often than I would like; mostly having a tough time against GWx decks. So I decided to add more removal.
Considering going -1 Huntmaster, +1 Dreadbridge Goliath. The big bug always requires an answer, and if it doesn't exile the bug, it makes another creature a threat.
EDIT: Went -1 Bonfire, -1 Pillar, +1 Goliath, +1 Farseek. I wasn't seeing farseek + 2 lands as often as I wanted. Pillar is becoming less and less needed, imo, since I put MM mainboard, but I can't completely delegate it to the SB yet.
So I've been testing a lot of Jund lately...just cuz and here is what I came up with...
I think with a 24 land deck we can't have too much of a top curve. Having at least 8 turn 3 plays is huge, and I have that with 3 Keyrune, 3 Avenger and 2 Connections. The 4 Farseek is mandatory and I actually think Avenger is better than Nighthawk at the moment due to Regeneration and interaction with Huntmaster, which is important. Plus, if they sweep you can flash it in after, which is handy.
This is where I'm at in testing and its been great
Fixed the manabase, if you have input let me know. I do respond to all my PM's
Edit 2: The Zombies matchup needs work...switching Avenger to Nighthawk to try out. No regen sucks but lifegain is a big deal, and Centaur Healer helped the Bant situation so why not. Lets carry over some positives
Against control, you take out the 4 Pillar, 3 Wolfir, 1 Mizzium Mortars, 1 Garruk and bring in 2 Thundermaw, 3 Appetite, 2 Liliana, 1 Rakdos's Return, 1 Vraska. (if Bant Control, -1 Mizzium and keep Garruk)
Against Zombies you go -1 Rakdos's Return, -2 Underworld Connections for +2 Deathrite Shaman +1 Blasphemous Act
Against Mirror you go -3 Wolfir, for +1 Vraska, +2 Thundermaw Hellkite automatically. I think you also drop the 4 Pillars for 3 Appetite for Brains and 1 of...I'm not sure. Blasphemous Act? Liliana? 1 Of Slaugher Games? Thoughts on this one...? Maybe even Rise from the Grave...oh I'm gonna try that
Against Reanimator style decks you take out the 4 Pillars for sure for 2 Grafdigger's Cage and 2 Deathrite Shaman. You also take out Garruk for Rise from the Grave.
I also think you want Appetite for Brains, and I'm debating bringing in Vraska. So maybe cut the 3 Wolfir for Vraska and 2 Appetite...this seems decent.
Gonna try it out.
I think I'm on the right track but would love some input
I'm not sure whether I'd call this midrange, as it plays a lot more like tempo, or even control to an extent. Early game removal, building up to efficient threats, all while keeping your opponent's board clear.
Credit where it's due: This list is a tweaked version of what beat me in the first round of the top 8 @ PA States, crafted and piloted by Josh Milliken at legitmtg.com
Why I'm playing this: I've been playing BR Zombies since Dark Ascension, and I enjoy control a lot more. I feel like with Gruul, it can only get better.
Zombies - Favorable. Keep a hand with lots of removal (preferably Pillar) and try to keep the board clear. Once you start dropping your dudes, you've usually won.
GW Humans - Favorable. Same strategy as Zombies, but be sure you can kick Thalia in the teeth as early as possible.
UW Aggro - Tough match up. Keep a hand where you can cast Liliana on Turn 3... because Geist is a pain in the ass.
Reanimator - Can be a rough match pre-board. Post-board, Deathrite Shaman and Cremate do a lot of work for you.
WUR Miracles - Play around their stupid counterspells. Watch out for Sphinx's Revalation and Terminus. Hang on to Sever the Bloodline until they hit their Entreat. After board, Slaughter Games targets (in order of importance): Entreat, Pillar of Flame, Terminus.
Bant Control - Same basic strategy as USA. Side in Slaughter Games and hit their Thragtusks. Hold dreadbores for Jace/Tamiyo.
Bant Enchantments- Liliana wins this match. Golgari Charm slows them down. You may want to side in Slaughter Games in this match, because the only answer to Sigarda main board are your Nighthawks.
Rakdos Aggro - Mulligan into removal. Stay out of the Brimstone zone until you can drop Huntmasters & Tusks. Like any red deck, life gain predatorizes them.
RDW - Haven't seen anyone playing it, but there's always that one guy at FNM. Same plan as Rakdos Aggro. If this becomes a real thing, I'll consider Witchbane Orb.
GW Midrange - I feel like we have the edge here. More reach, and way more removal.
Here is my current list. It is based on my current meta which consists of mainly the mirror and uwx miracles. Ive only seen one zombie player so that is why im lacking pillar of flame.
Let me know if yall have any tips for it.
@Atog: How come Olivia isnt in the MD? I understand that nothing is entirely set in stone, but she's good in multiple matchups, I don't see why you wouldn't want her main except for space. Another thing off the top of my head: No board clears? Geist and Sigarda are manageable with a few cards like Blasphemous Act in the board if you don't have Bonfire, and Mizzium Mortars is good enough against creatures early to warrant it's modular affect late (only losing to Sigarda, Armada Wurm, Angel of Serenity, and Griselbrand). How are Vraskas working in your deck? Most of the time for me, and others who tested, she would only 1-1.5, removing something, but she was either swung at, or removed anyways. Would every other removal spell in the deck work in the same position? How often are you getting off her almost-vindicate two or more times? I'm not trying to pick on you, but I like walker control decks, and want your list to do fairly well, so that I can possibly transition to it at a later date.
My sideboard is iffy, and I might switch the last two bonfire's away for Blasphemous act or Rolling Temblor, maybe even doing away with that and Dead Weight for 4x Searing Spear.
Control: -4 Pillar, +1 Rakdos's Return, +1 Underworld Connections, +2 LotV (potentially -1 Abrupt Decay, +1 Sever for Angel tokens and lack of enchantments)
Mirror: -4 Pillar, -2 Abrupt Decay, +1 Rakdos's Return, +1 Underworld Connections, +3 Appetite for Brains, +1 Sever the Bloodline (this leaves me vulnerable to Keyrunes, so I might swap something out of the board for Searing Spears)
Aggro: -2 Thundermaw, -1 Rakdos's Return, -1 Underworld Connections, +2 Dead weight, +2 Bonfire (messenger and/or lotleth? -1 Dreadbore, +1 Sever)
Reanimator: -1 Rakdos's Return, -4 Pillar, -2 Abrupt Decay, -2 Mizzium Mortars, +1 Underworld Connections, +1 Bonfire, +3 Deathrite Shaman, +3 Appetite For Brains, +1 Sever the Bloodline

Nighthawk is a better call in my local meta. We're overrun with lots of weenie decks, and I need to drop something to protect myself Turn 3 (and I'm not running any Farseeks).
Vraska steals games. In the control matchup, they're so scared of her, that she is a D-Sphere target. So I'll drop her, Vindicate Jace, she'll get Sphered, and I'll abrupt Decay, and vindicate Tamiyo. Her ultimate does go off sometimes, which is unexpected.
Mortars doesn't work for me. Bonfire is going to make it into my sideboard this week, I think. Sigarda is the target of Appetite for Brains & Slaughter Games.
Rakdos's Return has to be one of my new favorite cards since I see a lot of control. Late-game it's a finisher and mid-game it can seriously devastate opponents. The sideboard changes depending on what shows up to FNM but there's usually a combination of slaughter games, Deathrite Shaman, abrupt decay, Liliana, and other good stuff.
@Genocide: Witchbane orb seems like a card we should come back and consider. With the lack of relevant Artifacts, no one is really packing hate, so the only thing left is D-Sphere; the only card WUx control has that targets us (that I can immediately think of) is the Memory Adept you mentioned. How is Borderland Ranger doing for you?
@FromtheCrypt: Can I question why you have the singleton Aristocrat? It seems like another Hellkite or Olivia would be better.

It's actually what I was considering changing about the deck. I like the way they play but sometimes I wonder if with the 2 keyrunes they are really needed. Keyrune comes in and can tap for mana immediately, plus the 3/1 first strike body is nuts against thragtusks and beast tokens. They may become 2 Vampire Nighthawks or maybe 2 more Wolfir Avenger.
I ended up going with 3 keyrunes instead of just two, and that helps getting them much more often. I'd never be unhappy to see multiples; even when topdecking, they dodge board-clears and can beat multiple creatures. I'd consider a 1-1 with Keyrune and Avenger, but another Olivia / multiple nighthawks aren't something to push out of the way either.
The sideboard is pretty rough, and I think the maindeck may need a land or two added (probably 2 Dragonskull Summit if so). But overall I really really like the rest of the main deck.
Considering going -1 Huntmaster, +1 Dreadbridge Goliath. The big bug always requires an answer, and if it doesn't exile the bug, it makes another creature a threat.
I play 3 Huntmaster / 1 Goliath, (+1 Huntmaster in the SB). Goliath is a Juzam Djinn and very effective in the right situation. Also having a 8/6 First Strike Keyrune is fun
This is what I plan on taking to an IQ next weekend, I just wanted to get some thoughts on the direction I'm going before I play. Keep in mind that some choices may be unorthodox but the deck as a whole is mainly tuned for what I expect to see at the tournament.
@Koopa: A singleton Slaughter Games could help you out if you wanted another catch-all in the side, but I think you were one of the people that didn't particularly like the card. In that case, add another Appetite for Brains: it'll help out against the mirror, reanimator, and other midrange decks.
@IT: I hope I don't have to play you, but Ill cheer on anyone else taking a Jund deck to Dallas with us. Keyrunes are way too good in comparison to BLR imo. It survives board clears and cant be hit by sorcery speed creature removal. It also allows for a t4 Thrag instead of just another land in hand. On the flip side, if they remove the keyrune, it's tempo loss, but I think that the first strike is powerful enough to warrant the risk.
I was considering swapping a few things:
~Two land for Cavern of Souls
~The Searing Spears for Abrupt Decay
~Two mainboard cards for Thundermaw Hellkites
I got first out of ~35 people at a competitive FNM beating the mirror twice and an esper Superfriends deck, but I don't know for sure what the overall Dallas meta will be. Searing spears have been doing really well for me since I swapped them for what used to be Abrupt Decay, but if there ends up being more control decks at the Open, then I'll be wishing for the Decays. I had a friend borrow my Thundermaw, and ended up having Relentless in the MB because of it, and he worked really well, but its something else I'm not entirely positive about. I have the 1-1 split of Underworld and RR main since I don't like seeing RR vs aggro (what my lgs meta was for a while). Vraska hasn't really been used yet, so she might come out for something.
Nocturnal God of Chaos of The Æsir Probably the most random person you will ever meet. Trust me on this one. Well, I'm off to poop.
Oh, my username is the same on Xbox and Cockatrice, add me!

I'm thinking of playing a bit differently. My deck has performed well but with the meta so slow I don't think farseek is as valuable a card anymore. I might test out a few theories but here's my current deck:
Thoughts? I just don't know... I rarely have problems getting the right mana, I'm just experimenting with less ramp and more removal. And with all the removal Desecration Demon seems even better now.
@Kaiyla: With all the removal, desecration demon is actually worse. Sure it stops very specific decks in their tracks, but most have a way around it. Strangleroot is a bad option if you're having mana issues. Most people have moved away from it anyways. A playset of abrupt decay seems like a little much, but if you have an excess of aggro decks or ones that use d-sphere, I guess it can work. Farseeks are used for mana fixing as much as they are for ramp. A single green mana (+1 of anything) gives you access to every color you need. Olivia and the keyrune activation can be pretty color intensive, and normally if I have at least one green source I only search for blood crypts.
Yeah. Play 4 Farseeks, especially if you have issues with getting the mana right. Desecration Demon is SB inclusion at best (against Sigarda, maybe aggro too?). 3 Rakdos's Return is stupid overkill and very suspicious choice, I personally moved away from playing even just one MD because it can easily lose you G1s. I'd play 1 MD in the most if I really wanted to, maybe 2 if the meta is really heavy on control. Personally I play 0 MD 2 SB. 4 Abrupt Decays seems too much. Rolling Temblor is also questionable IMO, I'd play it MD only if my meta was REALLY filled with Geists. I think you can create lots of slots if you cut at least some of those cards.
EDIT: I'd definitely put in
+4 Farseek
+1 Rakdos Keyrune
(+2 Garruk, Primal Hunter?)
EDIT: I like that you have 3 Dreadbore, 3 Sever the Bloodline, 3 Bonfire of the Damned. It's a great outline. Maybe cut down to 2 Abrupt Decays, 11 removal spells should be easily enough. If you face lots of GW and Frites, I'd prolly play Ultimate Prices instead at the expense of other removal.
Remember to use proper deck tags.
When critiquing a deck, remember to make it clear which deck you are addressing, preferably by quoting the post with the decklist.

I would like to add how awesome witchbane orb has been for me in the sideboard. Stops opponent's rakdos's return, bonfire of the damned, blood artist, slaughter games, devil's play, curse of death's hold, geralf's messenger, pillar of flame, Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, Jace, memory Adept, all mill cards and all burn cards. It doesn't die to abrupt decay. Can't figure out why it isnt seeing more play

The sideboard is pretty rough, and I think the maindeck may need a land or two added (probably 2 Dragonskull Summit if so). But overall I really really like the rest of the main deck.

I play 3 Huntmaster / 1 Goliath, (+1 Huntmaster in the SB). Goliath is a Juzam Djinn and very effective in the right situation. Also having a 8/6 First Strike Keyrune is fun

I'm most likely taking this to Dallas. Love to receive any feedback on this removal heavy version.

This is what I plan on taking to an IQ next weekend, I just wanted to get some thoughts on the direction I'm going before I play. Keep in mind that some choices may be unorthodox but the deck as a whole is mainly tuned for what I expect to see at the tournament.

Here's what I'm taking:
4x Thragtusk
3x Olivia Voldaren
4x Farseek
3x Dreadbore
3x Pillar of Flame
3x Rakdos Keyrune
2x Garruk Relentless
2x Searing Spear

Thoughts?

Thoughts? I just don't know... I rarely have problems getting the right mana, I'm just experimenting with less ramp and more removal. And with all the removal Desecration Demon seems even better now.
I might think about strangleroots too

EDIT: I'd definitely put in
+4 Farseek
+1 Rakdos Keyrune
(+2 Garruk, Primal Hunter?)
EDIT: I like that you have 3 Dreadbore, 3 Sever the Bloodline, 3 Bonfire of the Damned. It's a great outline. Maybe cut down to 2 Abrupt Decays, 11 removal spells should be easily enough. If you face lots of GW and Frites, I'd prolly play Ultimate Prices instead at the expense of other removal.
