i am a big fan of rdw and glad to see that it should be back after a hiatus. my thought is if you are going to use faithless looting, why not use dangerous wager instead? i get that looting has the flashback, which is nice, but if you play wager at the right time you can draw two cards without having to discard anything. i know a lot of times on turn 5 or 6 i have blown my hand with nothing to play. just a thought
I think so too. I grabbed 4 just in case I decided to go with them, but will run between 2 and 3 as he's not the best turn one play. I've thought about him pretty hard and he seems like a good fit.
It looks good. I just can't get behind lightning mauler. Don't like that card at all.
I playtested three games Friday. The flail in my list feels too slow. Its especially bad in the beginning of the game. Running 21 lands, I found myself casting it one turn the back equipping another turn and having no mana open each time. Then when mu creature gets killed im behind two turns. I think the pagers are enough, and I might even drop them. I was concerned my small first strikers would need equipment for late game effectiveness but we might have enough burn for it not to matter.
Shred freak was underwhelming. Twice I played him on turn two only to be staring down an Elvish Visionary.
Stonewright is very good.
Devil's Play as a two of is strong. It helped me pull out a win late when I was sitting on eight mana.
I also feel like we want Hellrider. It would be nice to get that extra damage through at the end if we get the board stalemated with our opponent at low life.

Is your resistance to Lightning Mauler based on testing or just gut feel? Based on last night's 2-2 FNM, I'd say this:
-Stonewright is essentially a 1/1 for 1. Mid to late game he can do some work but early on I was really unimpressed.
-The sword worked well but I'm not sure it worked better than another threat would have. Needs more testing.
-Relatedly, the sword is most effective on first strikers, which was a really excellent bonus. I might revisit some choices to gain more first strike over more haste, or at least a balance of both.
-I splurged and tossed in two Bonfires main...they feel better in the side after all.
-I tried to get fancy with some Faithless Looting. Don't go down that road unless you make it a core mechanic. Basically, run 4-8 such cards or run 0.
-Cards I'll be putting in/looking at:
Stromkirk Noble (over Stonewright)
Vexing Devil
Nightbird's Clutches
Curse of Stalked Prey
I've been reading the RDW thread on the competitive forum and it seems many of them like Stonewright. I think he's a great mana sink in the late game. I agree that he is underwhelming in the early game.
I don't like Lightning Mauler because he is too conditional. He wants to give haste to our better creatures which either have haste already or are small enough in the midgame that attacking with them is suicide.
Vexing Devil is a very polarizing card. Consensus is that he is terrible. I don't think he's awful but I personally do not like him.
Bonefire in RDW is typically discouraged. The logic is explained in the RDW thread.
I don't like Rogue's Passage in this list, 4 mana to make one creature unblockable is a lot. I think Nightbird's Clutches would be the better option. The average CMC is low enough that the deck could function with 19 lands. I also think Stonewright should be cut down from 4 to 2. You really only want him late game for pumps, and multiples are pretty bad since you're realistically only going to pump one creature at a time. That would free up 2 slots for another 1 drop.
That's pretty close to this one that I put together. Mine runs about $60 and beats Selesnya decks, which is what i have to deal with in my local meta. I'm adding Dragonskull Summit and Blood Crypt to it to make it even faster. Outside of that I can't think of anything to add to make it better.
I started poking around MTGO win rates. RDW is currently the ONLY sub $60 budget deck able to consistently top 8 everyday. Dual lands zzzzzz.
Have people on here been placing well with this deck?
Read my blog. That WotC is now only publishing data from 1 event per day means none of my results are going to be public ~ but RDW is definitely doing well.

I made Top 4 twice for Game Day with this deck this weekend with borrowed playsets Blood Crypts and Dreadbores in the main. No Dragonskull Summits. Should have all of them in before FNM. Considering Vampire Nighthawk to go with Desecration Demon. Dreadbore came in handy several times top deck against Planeswalkers.
Has a hard time against heavy control if they get everything in place. Played the guy who won Sunday. (He went 4-0 then 2-0.) Wasn't fast enough game one before he got his combos. Game two was too much for him and he was done turn 4. Game three he did a strange SB into heavy aggro control that caught me off guard with a mull to 4.
Okay, that's an exaggeration. Twice the card.
Stormkirk will get to be a 2/2 at best before he dies or is just another blocker...
He's worth putting in there as a mana dump imo.
4 Stonewright
4 Ash Zealot
4 Rakdos Shred-Freak
2 Gore-house Chain Walker
4 Splatter Thug
4 Pillar of Flame
3 Searing Spear
4 Mizzium Mortars
3 Brimstone Volley
4 Silver-inlaid Dagger
3 Inquisitor's Flail
Lands (21)
19 Mountain
2 Rogue's Passage
The strategy here is pretty obvious.
Oooh, nasty. I like it. I love the Inquisitor's Flail in this list. And I'm liking the Rogue's Passage over Hellion Crucible.
Have you had a chance to playtest this yet?

I wanted to use Thundermaw Hellkite rather than Zealous Conscripts but it's a bit above my pricerange.

You basically have a RDW win deck. Browse through the competetive RDW primer post (its over 200 pages) it can teach you all you need to know.

Yep just found that thread, thanks
