Because the basic is one land type and can produce mana of only one color, in a multi color deck it can be handy to have a card which allows you to get the right mana or "fix" you mana
Ahhh.. Well I just thought with odds alone if I was to go White above Black that I wouldn't need that... But that does make sense.. My initial thought was that it was just a waste of a card spot..
Evolving wilds can also function as an advanced tool for library manipulation. It allows you to shuffle away cards that you do not want on the top of your deck ( for example, after the use of Index or Ponder).
It also "thins your deck of lands", as when you draw it, it is essentially like drawing two lands, which in the future reduces your chances of drawing redundant lands by a very small percentage.
Though these utilizations of the card may not be relevant to a new player, the are still somthing to think about.

This. It's why you see Fetch lands in eternal format (modern, legacy) mono colored decks. It's also why control decks will run cards cantrips and cards like think twice

would be better than just using that card spot to fill in with a basic land?
