So I'm wondering what are some very good budget rares that are just ever so slightly out classed by a more mana efficient or powerful counterpart?
For example, looking at board sweepers, I see Planar Cleansing and Phyrexian Rebirth sitting at less than 25 cents each while DOJ is around $2.
Another excellent spot removal option in black is Sever the Bloodline, for a quarter, you can get repeatable horizontal AND vertical removal that breaks wurmcoil and undying (I LOVE this card and will play it in every deck I splash black).
Another good card I can think off top of head now is Geist-honored monk from the sheer value it adds to any horizontal aggro deck. Crusader of Odric + Midnight haunting + vigilance for only 2 mana? Sign me up!
Generally speaking, these cards should have broad applicability and not be completely outranked by a common or uncommon card!
All of the black cards mentioned by shinbatsu are great candidates. Ill be scooping up as many of those as I can in the future.
I feel like Trading Post is highly undervalued at the moment and would be a great long term investment as prices will go up significantly once the card finds its niche. I almost snagged four while placing an order on tcgplayer but decided to hold for a bit and maybe try to trade for some at a FNM this week.
Sever the Bloodline
Bloodgift Demon
Soul of the Harvest
Harvester of Souls
Geist-Honored Monk
Mayor of Avabruck
Increasing Devotion
Thraben Doomsayer
Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis
all of them are powerful and would have seen tons of play just a few years ago. I expect some of the 5-6 drops to pick up after the titans rotate (assuming there isnt some other insane cycle of finishers)

Seem pretty common.
I'm surprised no one else mentioned Demonlord of Ashmouth, maybe it's because he needs a deck built around him rather than just throwing him in any deck. Hellrider is running about $1.50, but it's an incredibly powerful card, and you can still pick up a playset for $6. With both heroes rotating out this fall, I expect these guys to see more play. He'll go into pretty much any deck that has red in it and wants to attack with creatures.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
Bloodgift Demon is obscene for a $.25 card. Also Havenghoul Lich is only $2. Who knows what wizards will print in RTR that can combo with Havengoul and Heartless Summon.
I can't believe Bloodgift Demon is so cheap! And it has so much time left in Standard. It's won me so many games either directly or indirectly. A Phyrexian Arena that beats face and has evasion?! Easily my favorite card in standard right now.
Back to the OP subject: Skaab Ruinator seems awesome, even though it can be easily dealt with in the current meta. I'm curious to see how it'll fit into rtr. I'm definitely keeping an eye on that card.
Skirsdag High Priest is also a great card. I'd run a homebrewed B/W Liliana of the Veil deck with him in it. Completely ridiculous when you play tokens/weenies and Culling Dais. Make morbid whenever you want and get some draws while making Demons fairly early in the game.
Just found this thread and it's an excellent resource. I would definitely recommend buying playsets of nearly every card in this thread! A great read. Keep it coming peeps!

You think it's good with those cards, then you should take a look in the Primadox Ping thread for the deck I'll be running with it this Friday.
