I know a lot of people have been asking for mono-black to be viable in Standard. Could this be the start of a powerful mid-range mono-black deck? It makes the "dies to removal" argument void for a LOT of good Black creatures ie. Bloodgift Demon, Vault Skirge and Phyrexian Obliterator
His second ability is meh, although a hilarious answer to Mirran Crusader, but his third ability is incredible. The only downfall is no immediate impact on the battlefield if they have instant-speed removal
I really like what this implies for Zombies and maybe for the Undying Pod deck that seems to be building itself
I don't know how I feel about it. I love the whole, Human mikaeus and zombie mikaeus thing, though. For the current meta now, with haunted humans and tokens and g/w humans being huge, he might work pretty well, and even if his second doesn't work, all of your creatures, provided they aren't human, get buffed and undying. I think over all, cmc and p/t in mind, I'll give him an 8/10.

Yeah, I agree that this is sad face if dismembered within the turn. Would it be too much to ask for him to also have undying..?
Didn't even think about that G/B Pod deck that exists; makes Phyrexian Rager a bit more playable.
Indeed, that guy gets pretty good with Mikaeus on the field. So does Solemn Simulacrum and Skinrender and Acidic Slime
It really sucks that it's so fragile as a 6 drop though
You probably couldn't play this without Unburial Rites and Liliana of the Veil. This works well with Sorin 2.0's Emblems, but the tokens it makes can't come back even with Undying.
Unbreathing Horde would get a cool reset from this guy if not for the Lord effect.
Still, another thing that abuses his ability to always survive damage. Trample becomes ever more important against Black.
I love that Black is getting love in the attrition war, and yet it doesn't look over bearing because it doesn't work with Tokens and the Lord himself does not get the benefit. I say well played Wizards; a very nice piece to add to uh... anything.
Double (or single) Carnifex Demon never looked so good in play!! Oh... You DoJ? My board returns and I reset them for another huge bout of Undying while weakening your board (replays Mikaeus with Havengul or Rites). Pass turn.

I don't think Carnifax can ever die with Mikaeus in play...or the rest of your creatures, for that matter.
Instantly putting this in my heartless deck. I'll use a metamorph to kill your geist, now I get a double pumped fatty. This guy seems possibly completely broken. Also, the flavor is amazing.

Thanks to Argetlam from Hakai Studios for the awesome sig.

Isn't he so cool!? Carnifex Demon already totally hoses this Mono-Black Infect thing that exists for no reason; Uh... Block with Demon, give your guys the counters, I win.
But now he can reload the Undying and not ever feel bad! If he kills anything (other than Mikaeus) that creature will just come back with a +1/+1 on it! So weakening your board as well doesn't mean a thing!
And this will still never be a deck... Have I mentioned that I'm sad the Titans exist?
Can Undying stack? Strangleroot dies while Mikaeus is in play; does he get 2 +1/+1s? Hypothetically you can have 2 or infinity instances of Double Strike (which does nothing), so does Undying stack (except matter)?
For any creature 6cmc or greater, the following questions come to mind.
1. Does he survive the Dismember test? In Mikaeus' case, he doesn't. Saying that Dismember is hardly used in the present meta is a poor argument. If powerful creatures of 4 or 5 toughness start seeing play on the basis that Dismember is not being used, it will start getting used. Simple as that.
2. Is he better than the Titan of his color? Grave Titan provides a quickest clock out of all Titans, he cannot be Dismembered. Even if he dies, he still leaves 2/2 Zombies on the board.
3. How easily can he win the game?
-Without other creatures in play and without a combo of some sort, Mikaeus II is 6 mana for a 5/5 Intimidate. With other creatures in play, the opponent must kill deal with him, or lose. This is usually the case for all viable 6cmc spells anyway. Mikaeus II seems like he needs in a deck based around him that can really abuse of the Persist ability, such as Birthing Pod. He needs a deck that is fragile as he is.
Overall, I can't see this guy being seriously played in constructed.
This gives a very nice effect to other zombies like gravecrawler and skaab ruinator. They both come back on there own after they leave play for the SECOND time saving you the cost, then its back to the field and they both start over again!

Actually, you are wrong, it's not that simple.
Even if Mikaeus becomes widely used in a top tier deck, you still have lots of aggro decks that dismember sucks against, and lots of titan ramp decks that dismember sucks against.
Dismember is less of a concern in a varied meta, especially one heavy on aggro. Dismember is no longer so ubiquitous, so you don't have to avoid playing any creature that dies to it. In most games Mikeaus is not more vulnerable than Consecrated Sphinx.
This card plays well with Phyrexian Obliterator, it also plays well with any board wipe. Now all I need for my mono black deck is a good ole fashioned decent discard spell.

And for Damnation and Phyrexian Arena to be reprinted but yeh apart from that go for it.

Gravecrawler will also be nice. With undying he will never go away.

I think this has a lot of truth to it. Dismember saw a lot of play because Exarch Twin was around, it is still a good card, but it isn't the same meta. If the meta doesn't form into something dominating like Caw-Blade did (which it won't, nothing is that degenerate in standard), or a degenerate combo like exarch twin, then it becomes an "I almost killed your titan" spell.
If you are running a zombie tribe, cemetary reaper would be an auto-include almost.
That means the +1 affect from him puts Mikeaus out of Dismember and it's not a counter.
I think you also run a pile of hex parasites to remove your own undying counters.
Personally, his second ability is just fantastic. If a mono-black deck ever made it into standard, THIS would be its problem: Mirran Crusader. Dare I say it again? This card swamps him. Yes, sure, at this point taking 4 damage from a crusader is not the best course of action, but killing him through this is just, as I've said, fantastic. this would kill a near lethal swing from most speedy decks in standard right now, it kill Cshampion, it kills hero, everything. A mono black deck's worst enemy is a creature deck that outspeeds it while still having relatively medium-sized creatures. The undying ability in the right deck almost seals victory. In the right deck, he can certainly trump a grave titan. However, Mikeus II and a grave titan on the same team would make me feel quite tingly inside, so why not. I love him.
Sorry, I meant 4, not realizing that it would die after the first strike damage. Even better. With very few black ways to deal with large numbers other than zenith, this card is quite good for the right deck

Mikaeus gives +1/+1 to other non-humans, not +1/+1 counters. Undying only checks for the counters.

Mikaeus also survives Victim of Night and Doom Blade, both of which see more standard play than Dismember and Go for the Throat. Could that change? Yes. Will it? Who knows.

Very true, this is minimum a 1-of in any Heartless deck, or at least it should be.
