really happy about that illusions deck doing well im so sick of people thinking existing and popular archetypes are the only thing that can win touroments, yay for creativity doing well
LOL this ruined my ideas for what to run at states. I told my friend yesterday that if your not running something aggressive your doing it wrong in this format. Also lol at U fear mongers complaining about snappy.

In life all we can do is try to make things better. Sitting lost in old ways and fearing change only makes us outdated and ignorant.
Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
Making a good 3 color mana base is impossible right now, well at least inconsistent (without using mana dorks, artifacts), saying that it's not surprising that T8 is all about aggro.
It's annoying as hell when you hear Gavin Verhey praising Liliana of the veil, and how it changed everything, it's a powerful card but it's not the new Jace, on the draw is just sub pair against aggro, you drop her turn 3 and tap out you're basically dead. You need a bigger card pool to make full use of her and snapcaster mage.
I'm really into G/R Kessing Wolf run deck but without Garruk Relentless, it needs some fine tuning SB Tree of redemption is crazy tech against mono red and other aggro .
Liliana is REALLY hard to get off of when a deck gets behind it. It's definitely not the new jace, but Lil 2.0 is an incredibly powerful planeswalker, especially if a deck is designed to break the symmetry of her +1 without playing bad cards.

Illusions are good because they fall under the new updated Standard environment:
(1) Get 4 Snapcasters....build a deck around them that fits your play style.
(2) Get 4 Birthing Pods....build a deck around them that fits your play style.
(3) Play aggro red burn and simply say...you have four to five turns to do whatever you're doing with (1) & (2) before I kill you with burn and Stromkirk Noble/Kessigs. This also gets the added bonus of stealing from (1) also...splash blue...add 4 Snapcasters...flashback all my burn spells in addition to while I kill you with Stromkirk Noble/Kessigs.
That's pretty much it. Illusions fall under (1)...get four Snapcasters and build around them using illusions.
Wow, both of those pod lists are just awful. No wonder they didn't do better...
Seriously. That Naya list looks very untuned. I mean, 2 Hero of Oxid Ridge and 1 Hero of Bladehold? Mayor of Avabruck? Only 3 five drops (to 3 six drops, no less)? A lot of this seems very off. Geist Honored Monk could be a techy play though.

Mayor of Avabruck lets you pod a mana guy late game into a 2 mana creature that's a very real threat.
He's probably not one you immediately go for, he's something to get later, when you don't have any high CMC guys.
The same reason boneyard wurm might see play, late game birds becomes a big scary guy.

I didn't even consider that.
Well then, I'll concede on that point, but I will stand by my statement that the list looks very untuned. Really, it looks more like a Naya aggro deck that has some pods thrown in for value.
Illusion deck are half beaters half counters and removal. When you draw correct number of both you win against everything. When you draw only one half you lose big time.
Dunno about Todd's secret tech, but in both his feature matches he drew like a Topdeck God. Either that or somehow he built legacy merfolk with standart cards.
Burning vengeance deck is super sweetx2. Certainly could be a strong deck by the end of the block.
I'm surprised the field wasn't ready for Mono Red - looking at ML results this week I thought the writing would be on the wall
Seriously. I'm not seeing many Tree of Redemption, only four lists in the top 32 are running them at all. Timely Reinforcements wasn't as prolific as one would think... people didn't even seem to be considering mono red as part of their gauntlet.
I guess oxid ridge is also tech against Tree of redemption. How convenient. In the 1st place list would volt charge be better than brimstone?
I mean It proliferates the 4 stromkirk noble, 4 stormblood berserker, 4 shrine 3 koth, and most of these new mono red creatures are evasive dudes (stromkirk, stromblood, chandra phoenix, lavamancer)that you dont want to die so morbid shouldnt trigger that often off your own creatures (unlike with goblins where youll be trading into their monsters or goblin grenading yourself), and you dont want to waste burn on their creature either. Setting up a arc trail + brimstone volley is good but too mana intensive.
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.

Volt Charge *sometimes* 5's them for 3, with some support cards. Whereas Volley almost always 5's them for three, without very much support.

So glad I bought a pair of Hero of Oxid after I saw magic league testing and mono red thrashing everything. I dont even play red or like it, but I can turn them around soon hopefully.
Can anyone oblige me and tell me if any of the red ddcks in the top 32 used any new chandra or koth? my buddy playtested with a pair of chandra just as a way to fetch back his phooenix, and to also sometimes fork an arc trail here and there and he was pleased
normally id look myself for this but im not in a situation where i can

There were a lot of Chandra's Phoenix, even in the finals, and the deck that won ran Koth. I'm not going to do numbers of the entire top 32.
Gut Shot was another breakout card this weekend. It can Time Walk against WW or Ramp Green Decks, activate Stormbloods and bring back Phoenix well and such...

For those who did not watch or see results, Mono Red beat Mono Red in the finals.

So, a format with control decks, aggro decks and in-between decks sucks.
I'd give good odds this format is at least as healthy as the one after Jace and Stoneforge got banned (which is to say, quite reasonable).

Hero of Oxid Ridge keeps red in the game against Tree of Redemption and Timely Reinforcements. Koth is great in the midrange version of the RDW, compared to the Furnace Scamp version.
I like Spikeshot Elder going forward against WW and Steel decks.
The scariest card for RDW right now is T2 Honor the Pure, IMO. Might start seeing more Slagstorm in the boards.
