I'm looking for the most competitive deck that can beat decks like Caw Blade and UB Control. In doing so, RDW or Goblins?
Neither because of timely reinforcement. You can still win but you have to play super tight and mistake free.
For example watch the final of SCG open pittsburgh between Gerry T and Max Staudacher. Staudacher punted game 2(or 1, don't remember) because he got too greedy and attacked with his goblin chieftain into 2 squadron hawks, killing the chieftain.
If I played red, I wold play Hero of Oxid Ridge, at least in the sideboard. Using it will probably mean that you'll need a high number creatures. Not using it means that Timely Reinforcements beats you.
I also saw a RDW variant at SCG Pittsburgh that had all 1 drops and Searing Blaze and Incinerate with 20 or so lands. Could be worth testing out.
I'm tempted to say Red Deck Wins, because I dislike tribal nonsense. However, Goblins seems pretty sweet right now (Goblin Grenade, holy crap). But if you're interested in playing tribal, I would posit Vampires over Goblins.
Goblins are better. They have goblin grenade, and spikeshot with lords is really good. Also, they're just faster than mono-red, which is better right now.

personally what I'm doing are using arsonists + grenade
Goblin deck has so many power boosters in it. Chieftain, wardriver, bushwhacker and in some cases even hero of oxid ridge make this deck lightning fast. Grenade gives it a tremendous reach and with grim lavamancer it's essentially a 7 or 8 damage (with arsonist) removal.
Goblins are super-quick, and you want to be as fast as possible in this metagame to avoid auto-losing to Valakut and Splinter Twin if you're not playing blue.
Hey guys, I'm debating on getting into the game right now or not. I quit right as Caw-Blade first broke out. I played it very briefly and, despite liking it, I realized it was becoming a super popular deck and just decided to get out of standard at that point.
Right now, the decks that interest me the most are Pod decks, UR Twin, and Caw-Blade.
I really...REALLY...want to play a pod deck. I'm just not sure how well they perform. I've read opinions along the lines that pod decks are "cute" but aren't really putting up results. This makes me really hesitant, especially when they're some of the more expensive decks to build right now. I'm also just not sure which to play. There's so much variation. The one that intrigues me the most is the Bant version, but it doesn't seem to be played much, let alone have results, thus making it a crap shoot to invest in. With all that being said, they do seem like decks that might take a while to get right, plus I can see them surviving rotation.
If I don't play pod, I'll probably give UR Twin a go. I'm not usually into combo, but it doesn't seem to expensive to make. If I don't enjoy it, I may just wait till rotation or play Caw-Blade.
Caw-Blade seems to be the safest to invest in right now as it has been getting lots of praise. I just wanted to avoid the deck and play something new, despite the fact that I like playing U/W.
would Pyroclasm take care of timely reinforcements/weenie? or is there a better counter?
Probably the best answer. Then chip away at that extra 6 life.

Hey guys new player here i just got a 2011 Deck Builders toolkit and have no idea what kind of deck to make or where to start i have looked and searched everywhere and can't seem to find any help.
So I'vebeen away for a while, and just coming back into the fold. I played seriously back inthedays of Kamigawa/Ravnica/TimeSpiral blocks, then quit when Lorwyn came out, using the arrival of Planeswalkers as an excuse, but really it was for personal reasons. Either way, I sold everything and stayed out for a while. I briefly came back last year, couldn't afford to play the deck I wanted to play (stupid JMS!), left it and have recently dived back in. Im going to go out to FNM tomorrow and can't decide what deck to bring. I don't quite have the right peices for them, so Im trying to decide which sub-par list to bring. My options are:
Valakut Titan - this isthe deck I would most like to play overall, but I only have three Primeval Titans and cant find more (I can afford, but there are none to be had around here right now), and no Inferno TItans at all.
Tempered Quest - A mix of Tempered Steel and Holy Relic, its actually pretty good. Bouncing tricks with Glint Hawks, Memnites and Ornithopters power out the Quest, and it's a deck that doesn't mind that I only ahe singletons of the three Swords and BAtterskull.
Knights - I have all the peices for this (I think), but I'm not sure how good it is overall.
I also have things I've acquiredbecause I htink theywill have a place but not sure where yet, like Gideons, Baneslayers, Grave Titans, Lilianas, and other goodies.
Still, I have no idea what to bring. Any advice? Is itbetterto bringa subpar version of thedeck Imost want to play, or the best version of adeck I am lessenthusiastic about?

of those three deck, Valakut is a tier 1 deck that you can win alot with, Tempered Quest seems like a worse version of regular Tempered Steel Aggro and would probably improve by removing the Quest part, and Knights is not a deck.

My metagame consists of the following: 4-5 valakut ramp decks, one b/g pod, 3-4 u/r splinter twins, 2 tempered steel variants, 1 goblins/rdw, 1 'heavy metal red', 2 vampires, 1 u/b control and one u/w control.
I used to play elves, back when caw-blade was more prominent, as its absurd explosive qualities allowed me to push past the control and aggro decks, and it was sometimes fast enough to beat valakut in the race. Now however I find valakut is back, more popular than when I'd play elves, and it has a whole bunch of anti-aggro sideboards now that u/w control isn't such a huge contender, which makes my elf deck cry in games 2/3 (unless I open with 2 leylines, which is funny). As a result I've had to choose a different deck to play, one with more control and a much stronger valakut matchup. This bizarre U/W/R pyromancer deck has actually proven to be very resilient against valakut, infact one game I gained so much life he simply resigned, having no more mountains left in his library to search for and all of his creatures burned or countered away. It plays a much slower game, but I've found that since it has the lifegain to survive rdw style beatdown long enough to get the ascension active (the look on that guy's face when I gained 24 life from a single rest for the weary... priceless), and enough board control to survive and disrupt long enough to make that happen more than once every 5 games.
For some reason this deck loses really hard to U/W control though, specifically spell pierce was giving me real trouble since there isn't anything in the deck it doesn't counter, and playing around it causes some serious problems in the speed department. I refined the sideboard and put in spell pierce and combust over splinter twin and deceiver exarch, because the 'transformation' wasn't really a surprise, infact I expect most players were confused at its absence, assuming I simply didn't draw it game 1...
The reason I post this here is that it is a solid and more importantly very cheap deck option for players who find a metagame with an absence of u/w control, and it is truly fun as hell (and deceptively difficult) to play.

playing oxid ridge requires you to up your land count to around 23-24 which means playing with less goblins. I guess that's the trade off.
