This R/G mid-range deck can effectively play a controlling role in aggro matchups and an aggressive role in control or combo matchups. It is resilient against removal, while packing lots of answers itself. R/G also gives us access to some truly awesome sideboard cards.
CURRENT DECKLIST:
These do triple duty, with the ability to accelerate our mana, chump block or hold a sword, and trigger Vengevine returns. It's important to keep these slots cheap, so that we can play two in a turn and trigger Vengevines.
An uncounterable, hard-to-remove threat who's pretty good at carrying a sword.
Spells
Lightning Bolt - Cheap removal, efficient burn, can return Phoenixes from the grave. Dismember - Cheap removal, a great answer to Splinter Twin. Slagstorm - A board-sweeper against aggro decks (which is not entirely fair, since we have recurring creatures, Emissary fetches a land when it dies, and it doesn't kill Thrun or sword-equipped creatures), while still being able to act as another burn spell and Phoenix-returner against control decks. Sword of War and Peace - Turns early creatures into threats, helps us stabilize against aggro decks, and can end the game pretty quickly if the creature connects. Once equipped, the pro-red and pro-white nullifies Squadron Hawk, Lightning Bolt, Pyroclasm, Dispatch, etc. Beast Within - An answer to any permanent that is giving us trouble or in our way. Red Sun's Zenith - Another win condition, serves as removal that gets around graveyard triggers, and can return Phoenixes.
Anyway, it was a really fun deck to play, and it went undefeated at the first FNM I took it to. I like the prospects of a similar type of deck in M12 Standard. Here's a first draft of the decklist:
This deck has a similar strategy: hasted threats coming out a turn early. There's even some recursion with Phoenix, Vengevine, and Red Sun's Zenith, but it's not the main focus of playing these cards. Chandra's Phoenix won't be returned from the grave as easily as in a Mono-Red deck with tons of burn, though Vengevine's ability could be triggered fairly easily by throwing down a BoP/Elves and another creature. But again, it's not the main focus of the deck; these creatures are good enough by themselves.
Urabrask isn't as efficient as the other creatures, but has some cool effects and fits in the curve at 5 mana. Urabrask into Titan would be nasty if we pull it off. Vines of Vastwood seems like a nice surprise card to protect our expensive threats from the mass amounts of removal out there, with the added bonus of a pump effect so that the card never goes to waste. Tectonic Edge could potentially delay our opponent's threats after we've played ours.
Other cards I've considered:
Lotus Cobra - Another accelerator. Starts working a turn later than BoP/Elves, but can attack at the same time as giving mana. It could be nice since this deck's Turn 2 is kind of weak as of now, but I don't know what I'd take out to make room for it.
Hero of Oxid Ridge - Another efficient 4-drop with haste; can get our army past blockers, and pumps up our other dudes. But the 4-drop slot is crowded, and I think Vengevine and Koth might just be superior.
Fauna Shaman - Discard BoPs/Elves/Vengevines to tutor for creatures. Could alter the more expensive threats to be a toolbox of 1-of's. Though, it seems like this could be a little too clunky and slow.
Primeval Titan - Trample is nice. Is it the better Titan for this deck, though? I want to be ending the game ASAP.
Swiftfoot Boots - Reusable protection for our big threats; the haste is mostly irrelevant, though.
Grim Lavamancer - Whoa, whoa, whoa...a red deck without Grim Lavamancer?! Could force some damage through, but doesn't really fit that well in this deck.
Leatherback Baloth - A second 3-drop might be needed; a 4/5 on Turn 2 seems pretty nice, but could be hard to cast mana-wise.
This deck is all about tempo; we need to mulligan aggressively and can't afford to get mana- or color-screwed. I'm a little worried about the match-up against the current control decks. Mana Leak (or any sort of countermagic) and cheap removal could really throw off that tempo. Against the faster red decks, our creatures will out-muscle theirs, but I think they have a more reliable Turn 4-5 kill and more burn. Obstinate Baloth and maybe a better 3-drop could be sideboarded in. We have a maindeck answer to the Splinter Twin combo with Urabrask. I've been away from Type-2 for a while, though, so I'm not yet familiar with the environment (and, of course, Post-M12 is still unknown). Can this deck be moderately competitive? Please let me know if you have any suggestions!
I have tried Koth in my R/G deck (see sig) and found him a bit underwhelming because to get his +1 you need to target a mountain and with all he duals and non basic lands it does get a bit difficult... I would either increase your mountains or play Garruk instead to help get your creatures out a turn earlier...
If you do keep Koth also don't forget you can target and opponents mountain too I you need to get his +1. I always seemed to forget that lol...
Good point. To be honest, I didn't put any thought into the landbase yet. I like your deck; Garruk and Thrun are also strong cards, but again, the 4-drop slot is crowded with goodness xD. Thrun seems awesome in the Sideboard, at the very least.
Ok, I could definitely go up +3 or +4 Mountains instead of Forests for Koth. I'm not entirely sold on the new Chandra vs. Koth's immediate damage, but we'll see.
You don't need to replace Koth. The 6 mountains are plenty. I ran 5 in a RUW deck and had mountains out whenever I needed (I was also running Scalding Tarn though)
As for the deck....I'd say -4 Llanowar Elf, +4 Beast Within. You are still going to have to face big threats.
Your deck has 8 creatures that really can't attack. The rav block deck had moldervine cloak you can slap onto an elve or a bird, and invasion block had fires you can use in a pinch. I think you'll stumble in topdeck mode if you rip a bird or elf off top the time or get left with one of them in play.
At least old garruk can get you to overrun. Maybe that would help.
1) The Llanowar Elves can sometimes get in for 1. Not much but sometimes it can be relevant.
2) Other than the one-drops, there are 14 creatures that can attack. That isn't counting the Koth's Mountain, Garruk's Beasts, and Raging Ravines.
3) Topping decking isn't an issue if you have an active Fauna Shaman.
Anyway, it was a really fun deck to play, and it went undefeated at the first FNM I took it to. I like the prospects of a similar type of deck in M12 Standard. Here's a first draft of the decklist:
This list simply isn't very synergistic enough for my liking. Often people will play a birds/elf package to accelerate into a decent 3 CC spell. The only spell you have that fits that is Phoenix. That's simply not worth the juice imo. Cobra w/out fetchlands are pretty sub par since you can't do anything fancy like a 3rd turn Urabrask - so he doesn't make a whole lot of sense either (Yes, I know he's not in your list, just saying in general). Furthermore, your sources of non-combat damage to bring Phoenix back is minimal.
Koth with only 6 mountains...?
Another thing I see is that you're utilizing Urabrask with a ton of other haste creatures. Titan receiving haste is worthwhile, but that's it. Otherwise his first ability is mostly redundant in giving your creatures haste.
My favorite deck of all time was the old R/G Beatdown deck from 2003. With the return of Grim Lavamancer and with Lightning Bolt being in the format and some really good 2 drops I may try and make a modernized version of the list.
My favorite deck of all time was the old R/G Beatdown deck from 2003. With the return of Grim Lavamancer and with Lightning Bolt being in the format and some really good 2 drops I may try and make a modernized version of the list.
I can get behind this with a few changes. Switch out Elves in favor of Goblin Guides and Boar Umbra for Hero of Oxid Ridge. Not a fan of getting 241'd in an attempt to play an enchant. I *think* I can dig Garruk. I'd have to play test it.
Thanks for all the feedback. I see a few different directions that I could take:
1) Maximum recursion and staying power. Chandra's Phoenix, Vengevine, Chandra, the Firebrand, perhaps another burn spell (Incinerate seems good), and Raging Ravine. Beast Within could make the list, so you can deal with an opposing threat and are even more comfortable going into the later turns. This could be a really stable deck that's resilient against removal.
Beast Within is nice removal, and the 3/3 token can be burned easily, traded with Vengevine, or simply ignored with the Sword's pro-green. Sword also gives Birds some use later on. And you always have the ability to just nuke your opponent with burn and Chandra.
2)Fauna Shaman-tutoring version. A couple decklists were posted already, so I won't post one.
3) Fetchlands with Lotus Cobra. Ditch the Birds/Elves and go more Red-heavy.
This is a rough list, but basically, you can randomly hit a Turn 2 Lotus Cobra into Turn 3 Vengevine or Koth and be attacking for 7 or 8 on Turn 3. Better than Mono-R or RW Landfall? I dunno.
4) The original "New Fires" plan with a few tweaks.
This list simply isn't very synergistic enough for my liking. Often people will play a birds/elf package to accelerate into a decent 3 CC spell. The only spell you have that fits that is Phoenix. That's simply not worth the juice imo. Hero of Oxid Ridge in place of Koth so we don't have to worry about any Mountain requirement. His Battle cry also makes Birds/Elves useful. Added Leatherback Baloth as another 3-drop. Ditched the Urabrask+Titan combo.
There's still room for 2 more cards in this list...I'm considering:
I would try out either Slagstorm with the current meta starting to become more creature aggro or stick with Beast Within. I get alot of use with Beast Within because it will either take care of creatures I am unable to burn or Planeswalkers I can't reach. Another plus is if you need a blocker or a small finisher just destroy something you have to create a token...
I can get behind this with a few changes. Switch out Elves in favor of Goblin Guides and Boar Umbra for Hero of Oxid Ridge. Not a fan of getting 241'd in an attempt to play an enchant. I *think* I can dig Garruk. I'd have to play test it.
Yeah, unfortunately Boar Umbra is no Elephant Guide, but I completely forgot about the Swords! Garruk could probably go to 3 of. With Swords, Birds or Paradise becomes better then Llanowar, which makes Stormblood Berserker worse, so he could be Goblin Guide. With that said, updated list would be,
Preety standard Sideboard. Manabarbs for control, Splinter twin gets Naturalize and Combust, RDW gets Naturalize and Baloth, Ramp decks get Mark of Mutiny.
Slagstorm or Pyroclasm would definitely be solid sideboard cards. And Beast Within is starting to look better and better. =)
@RetrovirusX:
I think Plated Geopede and Grim Lavamancer might be a little underwhelming when you're only running 2 Fetchlands. And the Birds of Paradise acceleration seems weak with that deck - no 3-drops and only three 4-drops. Four Swords might be a bit too many.
R/G "New Fires"
To reiterate, the plan with my "New Fires" tempo deck is to skip the 2CC slot completely and ramp up to 3CC and 4CC a turn early. Phoenix and Vengevine are hasty beaters that CAN come back, but the ability to return to play is not why they're being used here. Vines of Vastwood gives your creatures some protection from removal anyway, and burn spells and Beast Within clear the way for them.
Filling the last 2 spots and making the following changes:
-1 Tectonic Edge
-1 Vines of Vastwood
-2 Red Sun's Zenith
+3 Incinerate
+3 Beast Within
Another interesting creature to consider in place of Leatherback Baloth: Mul Daya Channelers
R/G "Red Rock"
The Aggro/Control-type deck; I might try to develop this idea a bit more. I want it to feel like sort of a "Red Rock" deck: recurring threats, removal, mana acceleration, and land destruction.
Giving it some more ramp and a sideboard:
-1 Incinerate
-1 Beast Within
-1 Sword of Feast and Famine
-1 Red Sun's Zenith
+4 Rampant Growth
I actually really like the idea of RG haste aggro.
It's got a lot of good options in the meta right now. I can see it being good vs. Control with Chandra's Phoenix & Vengevine, and the rest is simply a matter of racing the combo decks while being able to play the control deck effectively vs. RDW.
Urabrask is also an effective "answer" to splinter twin too, which is nice.
