Slagstorm over Pyro or Lightning Bolt I think
the biggest threat to our deck is super fast aggro and Slag really fixes that problem along with your other defenses.

I main deck x4 pyroclasm and I have x3 slagstorm in my board. It's nice having access to basically 7 pyroclasms against the aggro decks!
Bolt is an amazing card, but against any match up really, pyroclasm can do what a bolt can do... although it does kind of waste a turn, which could be huge, but I've never felt the effects of pyroclasm crippling any of my games due to sorcery speed.
Last night's FNM turn out wasn't so great... We only had 3 rounds and I probably had the worst first two matches out of anyone there. I went 2-1... had there been a another round I probably would have snuck in another win!
Match 1 was EPIC! I played against UWB Caw Blade and won 2-1. Game 3 is what was EPIC! There is like 5 minutes left in the round, I mull down to 5... BUT IT WAS THE NUTTY 5 CARD MULL! My 5 card hand was forest, mountain, growth spasm, and x2 GSZ. He turn 1 Inquisitions and take my spasm. I draw a battlement, I play Mountain and pass turn. Turn 2 I draw a mountain I think. I play forest, then battlement. my next, i go mountain, tap 3, GSZ for another battlement. Next turn, I play another mountain so I have like 3 mountains, 1 forest, 2 battlements i believe... then I play GZS for primetime, fetch 2 valakuts. next turn i top deck a primetime, play a teramorphic, fetch another mountain... attack with primetime for 6 and triggering 12 valakut damage, then play my second primetime for gizzy with like seconds left in the round haha!
Match 2, I was the lucky guy to get paired up against another UWB Caw Blade deck... this one was piloted by one of the better players in my state who is preparing for Dallas. I had good enough opening hands both games, but he had all the answers both games... lost 0-2
Match 3 was against an interesting RUB homebrew deck by another real good player in my state. All it consisted of was tons of counters and removal... then like 2 inferno titans, 2 grave titans, and 2 wurmcoil engines haha. I won 2-0, but dang it was the toughest 2 wins i've ever played for! game 2 was epic as well... check this out!
I have NOTHING but a ton of lands on my board, he has a freshly summoned wurmcoil engine and 2 creeping tarpits, that he's been working me over with all game. In my hand, I have GSZ, Slagstorm, mountain, and teramorphic i believe. I have 2 valakut and like 8 mountainst in play, one in hand, and one in deck. He spreading seas my other 2 valakuts that were in play. I go GSZ for 9!... he's like WTF?! BOOM, big nasty terasty! I blow up the 2 tarpits, and my tumble magnet that had no more counters. Then I go, mountain, 6 damage to wurmcoil engine. Now he has 4 3/3's on the board and I have a 9/9 and a 3/3. I go slagstorm... sweep the board, leaving me with a 9/9! muahahahahaha! At one point, he was up 20 to my 5 life total... I came back and dominated!
What do people think about running x2 Acidic Slime MD? I was thinking about swapping my VE or Slimes, then putting x2 Gaea's Revenge in the SB for the regular U/B and U/W matchups...
I seem to board in slime a lot... and it's been a real good card against the match ups that it has seen action.

I've actually been testing x4 harrow in place of x4 cultivate. It's amazing no doubt... But I have yet to test it against control, which is true... It scares me away haha. And it's funny cuz with x2 inferno Titan... I haven't had a game where it hasn't been n my hand lol. Thank you for you suggestions and tips... i may sway a bit of your tips with a bit of my thoughts, for instance maybe going x4 explore, x4 growth spasm, and x4 harrow for my ramps!
state regionals are in a few weeks... so i have a lot of preparing to do! it may not seem like a big deal, but i want to start getting noticed among my states better players!

Just play tight and know when to mulligan. Always anticipate what potentially could be sided in and go with it. Always prepare for the worst.

LMAO... I had a real big itch to test a new idea last night. I used to run x4 Battlement, x2 VE, x4 Primeval Titan, and x2 Inferno Titan for my creatures. I had an idea to test Wall of Tanglecord in place of VE... and you know what?! It was like WHOA! It's amazing versus aggro, it's amazing versus caw blade variants, it's amazing against the mirror with a battlement... it was just an overall improvement to my decklist that I am glad I tested! Another observation that I made... Summoning Trap really sucks haha! It all comes down to luck and packing your deck with tons of beaters that I am not willing to make room for! GSZ is far supperior than summoning trap. I even tested x4 summoning trap inplace of x4 GSZ with a creature base of x4 Primeval Titan, x2 Inferno Titan, x2 AoZ... and Summoning Trap still was HORRIBLE! So my decklist looks like this now!
Spells (20):
Pyroclasm x4 (Thought about switching these for x4 Lightning Bolt and keeping x3 Slagstorm in my SB... thoughts?)
Explore x4
Growth Spasm x4
Cultivate x4
Green Sun's Zenith x4
Sideboard (15):
Tumble Magnet x2
Slagstorm x3 (May even switch these out for x3 ST since I already run x4 Pyroclasm MD... thoughts?)
Koth of the Hammer x2
Nature's Claim x2
Acidic Slime x2
Gaea's Revenge x2 (May get scared and switch these out for ST again lol... thoughts?)
Terastodon x2
I was undefeated in playtesting last night versus the esper blade build. I'll do more playtesting versus other decks, but with this build I have a very solid SB plan... I know exactly what to take in and out versus any match up!

Summoning trap is awful. I Wiff so much on the garbage with 9 threats, its unbelievable. Also Wall is pretty bad against UW caw blade. You played esper whom does not run DOJ, so it definitely owns them.

I am sure the wall couldn't be too bad against UW caw blade... the wall was pretty sweet being able to block and not die to equipt stoneforge and equipt hawks... then i'd destoy the sword and it was all downhill from there! Plus, isn't esper blade the more popular build right now? I was even thinking about doing a 3/3 split between the walls to make sure I am able to get a tanglecord because I can always GSZ a battlement!
So you're with me on seeing that summoning trap isn't all that good in the Valakut builds? I mean I tested it with 8 possible targets and you tested with 9 and we're both missing... it was so disappointing that I'd rather just cut it all together from my 75. I have gotten real good at playing around counter magic that GSZ is just so much better... like overwhelmingly better!

Went undefeated at tonights FNM with the latest list that I posted. Trapless with tanglecord MD! I beat boros 2-0, beat vamps 2-0, then I beat jumanji 2-1 for the final round!
Tanglecord was nasty... I was hoping to play one of the two caw blades that showed up so I can get some testing in... But oh well!
The jumanji deck had SB memoricides... Snuck up on me game 2, but game 3 I was on my toes. I'll post details later... PARTAY TIME!
If you're playing valakut, however, I think there is other option which is way better than the wall like more inferno titans or bolt. One thing you have to remember that valakut is a lopsided deck. It's a deck with 25-32 green spells with only 11-13 green mana source. Tanglecord requires you to invest in green to be effective against caw blade and this will strain the deck's green source even more.

yeah... a lot of people said the tanglecord was a terrible idea... even after i beat them last night with the help of mr. tanglecord...
i am just not seeing why so much hate for me using a big butt that's colorless, can block flyers, and give battlement more mana... having 2-3 green sources on my board isn't hard to achieve. i typically have 2 forests and a battlement and with a battlement and tanglecord that'll give me 2 instead of one green source with battlement... so green isn't hard to achieve. also, last night there was only ONE game where i didnt get a turn 4 titan and that was because he memoricided on his turn 4 and got my primetimes... on my turn 4 i would have casted my titan in hand. my deck has been rediculously consistent... and the tanglecord was a much appreciated addidtion to my deck!

Went undefeated( 2-0 UR burn control, 2-0 random deck, 2-1 RDW, 2-0 UWr caw) at last nights FNM with this list:
Aggro was my toughest matchup. I won game one by getting turn four titan, lost game two (Which was epic, I had no removal and two baloths weren't enough to save me from lvl 8 Kargan), and game three I mulled to 6 and kept 5 lands and a pyroclasm. He also kept a ☺☺☺☺ty hand, and I ended up top decking tumble magnet on turn 2, then later more burn, then bombs. It was a GG.
I didn't side in Claims, duno what else to use the 2 slots for.

U have an interesting build. Looks more like a trap type build that a GSZ MD build. If you're running all those big creatures MD, maybe consider running the x4 traps MD and go x3 GSZ in your SB... Then minus a slagstorm or pyroclasm for a possible x2 acidic slime or something in your SB! looks like a good build though!

Well everyone, just finished up a day of national qualifier magic! I brought my valakut deck to the show and finished 5th. I made adjustments to my list and made one crucial adjustment right before the tournament that I truly regret. I came there running x4 bolts MD... I feared the aggro so I made a switch to x4 pyroclasm... MAD MOVE!
My list was over all AWESOME... I'd switch backto x4 bolts MD and x3 pyroclasm SB. Anyway here's the list that I brought!

The top 4 above me consisted of x3 UW Caw Blade and x1 UB Tezz artifact infect.
Did you take notes? You should post a tournament report. Very interested to see how you did, especially since I see you had no Tumble magnets. I suppose Wall of Tanglecord does the same job, both in the mirror and against caw, right?

I suppose I can post a little bit about my NQ experience...
Match 1 vs. RUG: Matched against one of the better players in my state. I win the die roll, turn 1 evolving wilds for a forest, turn 2 mountain play pyroclasm to burn his cobra... he's real REAL sad. I then play a turn 6 titan i believe (i was playing around the leak)... he's looking like a sick puppy at this point. He plays double bolt to kill my titan EOT, then on his turn he plays inferno. I play the second primetime from my hand, get 2 mountains, then play the 3rd primetime that i topdecked that turn. Game 2... went about the same. I believe i opened both games with two primetimes in hand... sooooo awesome. 1-0
Match 2 vs. RDW: Game 1 he's mana screwed the first 4 turns... I proceed to land turn 4 titan, and kill him turn 5 with attacking and playing harrow. Game 2 he gets the goods and goes off on turn 2, by turn 3 i am dead. Game 3 worked out perfectly. He has a good little creature army building, turn 3 i have 2 battlements, a tanglecord, a forest, and 2 mountains. turn 4 i pyroclasm, play prime time, play my 3rd mountain, play explore, play my 4th mountain. he double bolts my titan... i play another forest and double harrow for game. 2-0
Match 3 vs. mono white knights: Game 1 he's mana screwed for turn 2 and 3... turn 4 i play primetime scoop phase by turn 5. Game 2, he mulls down to 5, but I still get my turn 4 titan then turn 5 another titan for game. 3-0
Match 4 vs. U/W Caw Blade: Game 1 I have a battlement, two tanglecords, one forest, and 3 mountains by turn 4, I cast titan because he tapped out for Jace and fate sealed so i don't bolt. by turn 6 i believe is when we moved on to game 2. Games 2 and 3 were HORRIBLE for me... I drew too many sac lands, too slow . 3-1
Match 5 vs. U/W Caw Blade: My buddy wanted me to make top 8 because he wasn't going to attend Nats if he won the NQ... so he gave me a win. 4-1
Match 6 vs. U/W Caw Blade: This match was much like the caw blade match that I previously played. It felt like all my cards were clumped together, even after pile suffleing. This was the person who ended up winning the NQ. His deck was VERY unique from other blade variants.
Top 8 played U/W Caw Blade... lost both matches due to HORRIBLE draws and clumped cards. Finished 5th overall.
My new decklist after the NQ would have been a FAR better build for the meta that showed up.
Overall I went 4-2 in regular matches. I thought x3 acidic slime and x3 bolt would be good enough from the SB, but u really benefit from having x2 claim and x2 slime for the swords. The instant speed of a claim is pretty crucial... Even if it's a narrow card so to speak.
the biggest threat to our deck is super fast aggro and Slag really fixes that problem along with your other defenses.

i am just not seeing why so much hate for me using a big butt that's colorless, can block flyers, and give battlement more mana... having 2-3 green sources on my board isn't hard to achieve. i typically have 2 forests and a battlement and with a battlement and tanglecord that'll give me 2 instead of one green source with battlement... so green isn't hard to achieve. also, last night there was only ONE game where i didnt get a turn 4 titan and that was because he memoricided on his turn 4 and got my primetimes... on my turn 4 i would have casted my titan in hand. my deck has been rediculously consistent... and the tanglecord was a much appreciated addidtion to my deck!
Went undefeated( 2-0 UR burn control, 2-0 random deck, 2-1 RDW, 2-0 UWr caw) at last nights FNM with this list:
3 Cultivate
4 Growth Spasm
4 Explore
4 OvB
3 Tumble Magnet
2 Koth
4 GSZ
4 Primeval
2 Wurmcoil
2 Avenger
2 Inferno
5 Forest
11 Mtn
4 Valakut
3 Wilds
3 Terramorph
SB:
4 Trap
2 Terrastadon
2 Natures Claim
4 Clasm
1 Slagstorm
2 Baloth
Aggro was my toughest matchup. I won game one by getting turn four titan, lost game two (Which was epic, I had no removal and two baloths weren't enough to save me from lvl 8 Kargan), and game three I mulled to 6 and kept 5 lands and a pyroclasm. He also kept a ☺☺☺☺ty hand, and I ended up top decking tumble magnet on turn 2, then later more burn, then bombs. It was a GG.
I didn't side in Claims, duno what else to use the 2 slots for.
Rock it, Rock it!!
That game was such BS. Im also tired of getting paired to logan every single week.
Ahahaha whoa I didn't know you were on here! Lol u gotta admit that game was epic... FOR ME atleast!
Yeah I dunno y u always get paired against Logan and I never do... Hmmm should talk to Jean about that... Maybe shes rigging the pairings! R u preparing for NQ?!
Are you playing Val for NQ? we should try to play test this week together.
My list was over all AWESOME... I'd switch backto x4 bolts MD and x3 pyroclasm SB. Anyway here's the list that I brought!
Valakut Ramp
Lands (27)
Forest x5
Mountain x11
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle x4
Raging Ravine x1
Evolving Wilds x3
Teramorphic Expanse x3
Spells (20):
Pyroclasm x4
Explore x4
Growth Spasm x4
Harrow x4
Green Sun's Zenith x4
Creature's (13):
Overgrown Battlement x4
Wall of Tanglecord x2
Primeval Titan x4
Inferno Titan x2
Avenger of Zendikar x1
Sideboard (15):
Lightning Bolt x3
Act of Treason x3
Summoning Trap x3
Acidic Slime x3
Gaea's Revenge x3
For the SB, I'd probably go... -1 trap, -1 slime, -1 revenge, +2 nature's claim, +1 terastodon.

Lands (27):
Forest x5
Mountain x11
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle x4
Raging Ravine x1
Evolving Wilds x3
Teramorphic Expanse x3
Spells (20):
Lightning Bolt x4
Green Sun's Zenith x4
Explore x4
Cultivate x4
Growth Spasm x4
Creature's (13)
Overgrown Battlement x4
Wall of Tanglecord x2
Primeval Titan x4
Inferno Titan x2
Avenger of Zendikar x1
Sideboard (15):
Tumble Magnet x2
Act of Treason x2
Slagstorm x3
Nature's Claim x2
Summoning Trap x2
Acidic Slime x2
Gaea's Revenge x2
Overall I went 4-2 in regular matches. I thought x3 acidic slime and x3 bolt would be good enough from the SB, but u really benefit from having x2 claim and x2 slime for the swords. The instant speed of a claim is pretty crucial... Even if it's a narrow card so to speak.
