Has anyone played hero of oxid ridge as a 4 of? With all the caw-go decks and valakut flying around, hero seems to go through it all while koth eats is a chump block. I'm currently playing it as a 4 of and I am never sad seeing it (unless I open 2-3 in my opening hand). I don't play koths in my 75 either. The only match-up I would prefer a koth to hero is U/B, that's it. But our deck is already good against U/B.
I think having it as a 3 of would be the best number. Take note that we still need koth in the deck. I'm currently playing it as a 2 of in the main and 1 in the side. The 3rd oxid comes in vs control and helps me win the game. Also, this card will be better because the meta is shifting to more hawks + stoneforge
What meta calls for Hero over Koth, if I might ask... My meta represents most decks...
Hero is good in most every matchup, in my opinion. Most aggro decks right now are centered around a swarm of 1/1s. Hero says they can't block. Game over.
Against control, he kills Jace the moment they tap out for him. I can't think of many instances where I'd want to take him out, which is why I run 3.
He's also pretty decent against the ramp match. Remove their Lotus Cobra's and Oracle of Mul Daya and swing through their Overgrown Battlements.
Of course, his 2 toughness is what really scares me. That's easily chumped by a Lotus Cobra, Nissa's Chosen, Goblin Guide/Wardriver. I'm currently running 4 Mirran Crusader and no HoOR, but I might make a 1 for 1 swap soon.....
It's good. What I find myself asking, however, is "is it better than Mirran Crusader?" These slots are in direct competition with one another, and basically define the playstyle of your personal list because they are the most mana-intensive G1 cards. Determining which of these cards is better positioned in your metagame is, in my opinion, one of the most crucial aspects in deciding what your whole decklist should look like come Gameday.

why are they directly in competition with eachothher? 3drop and 4drop..im not a boros player just yet but i want to learn my meta
sadams252, Boros has a weak manabase. So anything with a double of a color is in direct competition with other cards that could be in the deck that uses 2x of the other color.

The fetchland manabase makes it really awkward to curve a double white spell into a double red spell. Despite the fact that fetches like Arid Mesa and Terramorphic Expanse can theoretically give you access to both colors, you'll often have to choose one or the other depending on your hand requirements. Examples where this can be troublesome are:
- T1 Steppe Lynx with Goblin Guide in-hand. Which one-drop you play can have a profound impact on the game, since T1 lynx has more EV damage-wise, but it makes it impossible to curve into T2 Goblin Guide plus Bolt.
- T1 Goblin Guide into (Draw:Kor Firewalker). Nonbo FTW.
- T3 Mirran Crusader with Hero of Oxid Ridge/Koth in hand with no mountains in-hand. Using an Arid Mesa for a Plains may screw up your T4 curve-out, sicne there is no guarantee you'll draw a red source

So now that the mainstream metagame has had more time to develop, where do most people stand on this card?

The explosive potential of the card for me makes it one of my favorite cards in the deck the ability to drop in and add 4-7 dmg on board is something very few opponents play around and couple that with a fetch for a lynx or Geopede and he can be a blowout play. Play him as a three of right now. It adds the needed extra punch I feel the deck lacked pre MBS.
I run 2 MD. 0 SB. I like that, because I'm still a huge fan of Koth's staying and explosive power. I hate how sometimes all it takes is a single Tumble Magnet or burn spell to completely invalidate your 4-mana investment before he attacks, and the only way to do that to Koth is with a counterspell. So I have 2 of each in my 75.
I'm quite a big fan of Oxid Ridge and fail to see how he's bad against Elves as some posters have implied. Or at least, they said they prefer Koth in the match-up.
Oxid Ridge helps end games before we get past the midgame. It shines against hawks and mystics. It's pretty good against Vampires if they don't kill it. I think it's fantastic against Elves as they try to muck up the board with 1/1s. It helps you get past Overgrown Battlement. And it's absolutely ABSURD in the mirror if they've already wasted their removal and you have some hawks. It is clearly and aggressive card, but it plays defense better than Koth does. Personally, I play 2 of each MD and I'm actually fixing my sideboard right now. Not sure if any will make the sb.
I'd liked it more than Koth. I'm just a little distraught by the fact that it is yet another guy that dies to Lightning Bolt, Disfigure, Pyroclasm, and the like. This guy's still a solid 2-3 of though. There's a ton of value to be had with each of its abilities.

Feelings? I'm playtesting this this weekend, but I thought it might be better than running a third HoOR, just for varieties sake.

The white hero is probably better if the game extends to a certain point. But boros is all about ending the game as soon as possible. This is why the red hero fits our decks more than the white one.

Yeah, I'm thinking that too. I think it takes 5 turns for the white hero to do as much damage, but i'm just thinking, meh. lightning bolt? well. whatever. if they want to waste removal on the hero. go for it. i have other threats.
Sometimes though it'd be nice to have something big enough to take a slagstorm or bolt. But then again, that's why there's Koth.

On the Elves thing: While they do swarm the board with 1/1s, 4-12 of those elves are either going to pump other elves or help regenerate them when Hero swings. So it's not as helpful as it would seem. I think it's a toss-up which is better because Elves is just a terrible, terrible matchup for us.

For the most part, elves players don't care much to block either, they'll block only when it's opportune to them (which is like, never). Games like this you have to do one of two things, either beat them fast as can be, or trade cards for theirs, blow up their archdruids &/or Ezuri, journey their VV's and try to beat them before they can overrun. Side in sparkmage + collar, hope you can last till turn 5. Make it so it's not worth it to overrun. It's a waste of time.
Doesn't happen often. It's a terrible matchup. Really, elves, is a tough matchup for a LOT of people, the only problem is... turn 2 pyroclasm, ratchet bomb, just seem to eat them alive. They're great against Boros and U/W, but Valakut & RUG... not so much.
