Why do you need path to mantle? makes the mana worse and doesn't add much to the deck that mono red doesn't already have. You have sweltering sun and fiery cannonade. plus 1 damage is too small anyways.
the beauty of Path of Mettle is that aside from creating a potentially one-sided board wipe (against tokens decks, for example), its flip side is also useful vs other creature decks and control decks.
aside from that, having access to white mana could give the deck some good sideboard cards, like Cast Out/Ixalan's Binding/Thopter Arrest for those pesky Hazorets, Phoenixes and Scarab Gods.
Clifftop Retreat has been reprinted and it made the mana base much better than before.
5-0 mtgo league yesterday. Deck felt great against any decks susceptible to Goblin Chainwhirler. Goblin Chainwhirler is the truth in so many occassions. I plan on playing this in the ptq this weekend.
It seems that every white deck on mtgo is running Lyra main/side so I believe the best answer to that is Puncturing Blow as it doubles against Scarab God.
I'd like to improve my control match up, any suggestions of additional cards? The Kari Expertise in the side is for Galta, but could be replaced to improve the control match up. Thanks!
I went 3-1 at FNM after modifying this deck. Lost to RG Monsters (Dinos?). He slammed me with 3 Glorybringers in the third game...not much you can do about that. This is my list:
I've been playing mono red since Dominaria dropped. Chainwhirler has been so amazing in most games. I've been running a list that recently 5-0'd and I've had moderate success. My biggest issue tends to be U/W control. That deck is just ridiculous.
This is the decklist, how can I help my control matchup? I was thinking about running Vance's Blasting Cannons
I've only been playing "competitively" for a few months. Do I just need to get better at playing magic?
Seal Away is definitely a problem, but its mostly just the deck in general. Once Teferi hits its been pretty much game over for me.
That's why I'm testing the R/W version, it's not as fast but it gives me cast out main deck and ixalan's binding in the side board. They are good in mirror matches as well to take out opposing hazorets.

Knight of Malice is hexproof vs white so it can't be targeted by Seal Away, Thopter Arrest, Ixalan's Binding, Cast Out or Teferi, Hero of Dominaria.

seems decent to me.
that plus Duress against board wipes and Sorcerous Spyglass vs Search for Azcanta and planeswalkers like Teferi and Karn should be effective vs U/W Control.
I have had a lot of fun with the deck, and some really good results. I had a lovely 4-1 last Friday, coming in 2nd out of 23 for Standard. I only lost two games that whole night, so quite a night of playing...
I have a more "fun" deck for Standard, but I do like "winning." I'll be playing this list a lot until rotation in September.
As always, early pressure plus reach is hard for UW to deal with. The Flame of Keld is an all star when it comes to getting across the finish line. Even in a more midrange list I think it's worth trying a few out of the sideboard. The draw two by itself is a solid boost and the ultimate gives you a puncher's chance even in games that looked out of reach.
There's no silver bullet for UW. They can deal with any one card just fine. You have to try to arrange your deck to present more threats than they can handle. Also please allow a moment of silence for Ramunap Ruins.
How has that more burn oriented list been treating you u/jacobk? Ive been having a terrible time with blue white control at my store. The lists are pretty stock only running Teferi to win mainboard and a couple of Lyra and gearhulk in the sideboard. I recently added a blue splash for saheeli, and spell pierce/negate which seemed to help some, but feels worse against the field. A friend suggested flame of keld and wizard's lightning to me but I was skeptical. How does it feel vs UW control and how does it feel against the rest of the field?

Honestly I lost with it enough that I'm off the deck for now. While the UW matchup was pretty good the BG matchup was abysmal. They start getting giant blockers down early and they close the game out quickly with giant monsters.
Flame of Keld is slower than I initially thought. Usually you won't get to the ultimate until turn six at best, which is just too slow against a lot of decks.
If you really want a UW killer I'd go with the mono blue aggro deck. I think I'm lifetime 10-1 in competitive leagues against UW/UB/Esper control with it. Ironically that deck is a little soft to R/x aggro. Circle of life.
If you're sticking with red I'd think RB with a bunch of discard in the sideboard would be a good bet. Sorcerous Spyglass can at least slow down the Teferi nightmare scenario too.
ETA: Even the UW matchup was getting worse once they started running History of Benalia out of the sideboard.
Though there seem to be lots of different lists and mildly different play-styles because of varying card choices, it does seem that Mono-Red Aggro or some variant is "the deck" to beat in these early days of Dominaria Standard. Some decks are foregoing 1-toughness creatures because of Chainwhirler, most decks are running 4 Chainwhirler themselves, and others are incorporating black.
I've been playing a mono-Red burn deck, but didn't have any Rekindling Phoenix; I managed to pick up one this weekend, and although that will only be seen occasionally, I'm curious to check it out. I often found myself in situations where I alternately loathe/love Bomat Courier. A lot of times, I'll be wanting that fourth land forever, and usually it's because of Bomat. They can be really great; they can be tricky and terrible sometimes. I've opted to cut them for this current build, and hope to pick up another Phoenix in the week ahead.
Sideboard (15)

2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
2 Chandra's Defeat
3 Fight with Fire
3 Glorybringer

2 Magma Spray
1 Aethersphere
What do you guys think about this list ?
Do you have any sideboard strategies and game plan against each matchup ?
What are the best and worst matchups for mono red ?
So, I took my Bomat Courier-less, splash of Chandra and Karn version of Mono-Red Aggro to FNM tonight, and came away pretty pleased with my results.
Match 1
W, 2-1, W/U Control
Game 1: Game 1 looks to be going in my favor pretty soundly. I get off early Soul-Scar action, double abrade Lyra, think I'm going to get in for the win, only to have 3 successive threats get Cast Out. She takes the game.
Game 2: I explode out of the gates, apply early Soul Scar prowess beatdown with Shock and Lightning Strike support. This one goes quickly in my favor.
Game 3: This was a nice, fun interactive match; she had lots of Cast Outs, but I had more threats; eventual Hazoret discards tilt the table in my favor, and I build a superior ground force for the win.
Match 2
W, 2-0, G/B Saprolings
Game 1: I keep a 2-land hand, with mostly 3 CMC cards in my hand. I thankfully find the 3rd land in short order, and 3 of 3 CMC cards were Chainwhirlers. Saprolings HATE Chainwhirler.
Game 2: This game is better for him, more interaction and black cards to kill my threats, but my threat density is a lot heavier than his removal suite, plus I play red spells that melt face when applied correctly. Easy match win.
Match 3
W, 2-0, W/B Knights
Game 1: I play mountains, and my opponents starts groaning. Chainwhirlers coupled with Soul-Scars do good work to his attacking force, and Hazoret seals the deal.
Game 2: On the draw, I keep a pretty solid hand with Khenra, Shocks, Karn and Glorybringer; seems sort of man deficient but I had 2; thankfully, I draw like 2 lands early, the deck gets flowing, and runs Knights over.
Playing for 1st place, but playing Jacob, basically the best player in the shop. He's playing White/Blue Control. I should have a "chance," but Jacob is the best player in the shop.
L, 0-2, W/B Teferi Control
-I'll just summarize the match; had my deck played "well" both games, I might have had a chance. As we approached the critical moments of Game 2, I thought I might have a chance, but he drew the perfect removal, and defeated me soundly in both matches.
In summary, Chainwhirlers did lots of good work; Red is in a particularly fun place right now, having the guns and the firepower to compete with the more complex, more expensive Tier 1 decks, which there aren't very many of at this point in time. Barring some emergency banning of Chainwhirler, Mono Red looks well positioned for the next few months, but will lose so many critical pieces, it will be forced to re-define, and most likely add a second color. Adding that second color might shore up deficiencies, but will make the RRR of the Chainwhirler difficult to negotiate. So, it will be interesting to see what happens to this "shell" after rotation. At the end of the night, I got 3-1, with two 2-0's, and a nice 6-3 game win/loss record as well. I get 3rd place on tiebreakers, but my packs yield junk. Oh well, was a fun night, had good matches (minus the slaughter in the last round) and placed well. I look forward to slinging more red spells next Friday.
I got into Standard by combining 4 copies of the Hazoret Aggro challenger deck, as that's the most valuable one and I like playing that kind of strategy. I am open to other cards like Scavenger Grounds, Rekindling Phoenix or Earthshaker Khenra, though I didn't have them to start with. Phoenix isn't rotating until next year, Khenra and Grounds are only a few bucks. I'd want one of each for my collection binder anyway.
Grounds provides graveyard hate main without taking up a nonland card slot. Similarly, Magma Spray does double duty as ordinary removal.
24 lands led to manaflooding, as I'd expected. I often got manascrewed at 22. 23 it is.
I avoid running 4-of's of legendaries, so I'm not stuck with dead cards in hand. Hazoret is worth it for consistency but even 3 Kari Zev or Chandra almost feels like too much, so I might take those down to 2. Likewise, Glorybringer is powerful but brings up the curve.
Harsh Mentor does not do much mainboard. Abrade is useful, but I'm leaning towards less than 4 main and more sideboard.
Harsh Mentor, Magma Spray and Abrade seem more like sideboard cards, or do they affect things common enough to worry about maindeck?
Pia Nalaar doesn't make sense since I didn't go in an artifact heavy direction.
The other cards from Hazoret Aggro seem too low powered.

I am open to more Rekindling Phoenix and Earthshaker Khenra once I decide to spring for them and find where to put them.
Is triple red for Chainwhirler why you cut Sunscorched Desert? I like the idea of feeding it to Scavenging Grounds if I need to use that repeatedly.
Why put all the Chandras to sideboard?
Fight With Fire is interesting, whether it or Chandra's Defeat comes in depends on the matchup

Yes, Chainwhirler is why no Sunscorched. And its worth the trade off. A single activation of Scavenger Grounds should be all you ever need in a matchup where its relevant. But if youre that worried about graveyard strategies, cards like Crook of Condemnation & Silent Gravestone are SB options you could consider. Chandra is just a meta call. You could swap the 2 Glorybringer for 2 MD Chandra instead and move the former to the SB if you see less aggro. Fight with Fire is for beefy creatures like Lyra, Steal Leaf Champ, etc

I do have trouble with sideboarding, both what 15 to include and what to actually use in a match. I'll see if I need any more graveyard hate as I play the deck more.
I figured Fight with Fire was there mainly for its unkicked effect, but the kicker would be a nice bonus in a long and/or manaflooded game.
Endless Sands is an inexpensive card if your meta has no GodPharoahsGift and/or you don't want to pick up Scavengers
it's not really meant to be good; but it's something to do for longer games to help dodge all the 'remove a creature gain 2 life cards' as a 1 of

You mean Scrapheap Scrounger? I see how Endless Sands is an alternative for recursion. it doesn't impress me, but I might try it if I don't go down the Chainwhirler path.
I like the simplicity and consistency of not having a splash. Legacy Burn, feels like a similar deck to me and I don't splash in that either. So it's not a cost issue, though Scrounger and fixing like Dragonskull Summitare cheap.
