I think that Ritual of Soot should be really good and probably going with 2 or 3. Detection Tower is a really cool idea, I will def try this out.
I will be going with a similar list Star City Games posted for my first week. 4 Nicol Bolas, the Ravager and 4 The Eldest Reborn both seems a little too high, so I'm going to try it out and see and see.
So can you guys help me out here. Help pull the wool away from my eyes. Please explain to me why on earth you’d play a card like Risk Factor in a control deck? I understand in a burn but not in a deck like this. Especially when this deck has access to Chemister’s Insight. I mean, imo Browbeat was a pretty decent card and it saw nearly no play. This isn’t MUCH different and yes, it IS better but doesn’t belong in a non burn control deck.

I was doing a little goldfishing with the counter-burn dec I posted on the first page of this thread and had so much fun! You basically did nothing but counter and draw for the first few turns. Throw in a Thought Erasure to disrupt their tempo and finish the game within a couple turns.

Ya I know, I was telling the guy that couldn't wrap his head around playing risk factor, why they were playing risk factor
Excuse me? Risk Factor is a TERRIBLE card, in a control deck. Which, correct me if i'm wrong this is a control thread is it not? By all means however, play it and good decks will simply beat you. I'm just letting you know so you can wrap your head around playing cards that actually fit a deck or an archtype for that matter. Or are you the type of player that plays Night of Souls' Betrayal in a BW Token deck? sheesh....

Divest is in the board specifically against Vine Mare, if one of those hits the board against this deck it folds like a wet paper bag.....The one thing I'm not a real fan of is the lack of real sweepers in this deck combination so I've been thinking about maybe doing Esper?

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated!
The Eldest Reborn or Plaguecrafter are both possible answers to Vine Mare (or Carnage Tyrants), and play well in Grixis. Keeping the rest of the board clear is pretty achievable, and the so the edict effect can be pretty reliable. Eldest Reborn has some great synergy with Nicol Bolas, as well (and a flavor win!).
Not sure I'm fan of Divest, since that kind of matchup gets topdecky pretty quick after you stabilize the board. You have to draw the Divest pretty early for it to have any impact.

You're right my wizard! Risk Factor blows in control and also right that this was deemed a control thread so your point is valid. We were just talking about a counter-burn version that looks sweet!
In this build I tried to see what could be done without pw/creature based wincons.
There are a lot of great burn spells in this format.
I like the idea of just counter-burning the opp to death, bypassing creatures/planeswalkers entirely.
Ral G2 should be a nice surprise as well.
Do you have a sideboard for this deck? I like the look and feel of it and I have pretty much all of it. I am still fairly new to Magic and still struggle with my deckbuilding skill and trying to learn. what situations would cause me to sideboard certain cards and why?
I think Azors Gateway would work really well in a Grixis control shell with old St. Nick. I already see lists running banefire, so it isn't that far fetched to throw in expansion explosion as another win con. A control deck isn't going to be short on spells either.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
What do you think about using Enigma Drake as a finisher in Grixis Control ?
It grows rather quickly and is a fast clock if left unanswered.
Sure it can get easily removed but with The Eldest Reborn it can come back bigger and it is also easier to cast it and leave up mana for cheap interaction than with the more expensive threats.
So can you guys help me out here. Help pull the wool away from my eyes. Please explain to me why on earth you’d play a card like Risk Factor in a control deck? No one suggested putting Risk Factor in a Draw Go - Passive - Permission Style Control deck. Relax.
Control is more than that Archetype, there's lots of Archetypes for Control shells...
Counter Burn with win cons such as Banefire and Lightning Strikes and Ionize combining together to put a good tempo clock on your opponent is still Control - and Risk Factor slots in nicely in that Control Archetype.

Narrow - It's not a Terrible Card in the Right Deck - In the Right Deck it's actually an amazing card.
It's Terrible in a deck where you're looking to be out on Turn 10 waiting to drop a 5/4 Creature or a 5/5 Creature to beat down for 4 Turns.
It's a great card if you're having them be stuck at 10 Life or less around Turn 10 or earlier and then force the opponent to choose to take 4 more or let you Refuel your hand...

I replied to you sir, sorry for the late response.
I haven't been on MTGS for awhile...
Hope my response helps!
PHEW --- Glad to see after I haven't been on here ina while, the Discussion picked up some!!!
This list has been my PRIMARY focus of testing over the last few weeks since the Set went live on MTGA and in Shops.
The deck has gone through a few minor tweeks from when I posted it in the Thread a few weeks back... the deck has tested extremely well on MTGA, and did well the first week I brought it to FNM.
I think it's a great deck... Bolas, as someone mentioned in another reply turns on Removal, yes... This is true, however; that's precisely what I want.
Turn on their Removal, but slowly Disrupt your Opponents Hand. This deck plays like a TEMPO Control deck. Drop Bolas out there, they either answer him, or they will probably die fairly quickly.
The great thing about BOLAS is late game, he becomes the Tool we use to REBOUND in Grindy Matchups too.
I've absolutely had plenty of mana in Grindy matchups to Cast Bolas and ACTIVATE him, Down Tick and get RAL out of the Graveyard and take over.
And Ral.... Geez, what can I say, this is a great card, I think alot of people are sleeping on this card.
I destroy the Teferi Decks, mostly due to the Disruption that Bolas and Black Discard spells give us... while also RAL will close out Games quickly.
It's definitely my FAVORITE deck to play right now, I love casting Bolas, and Ral, I think the pair make for a great wincondition.
That said, I'm still toying with my Creatureless COUNTER-BURN Control deck as well...
While I haven't TESTED this deck - and have only Gold Fished it... I think this deck is incredibly efficient, and I have actually sleeved it up to get it a test run this week.
I'm preparing for a IQ at my Shop and store Championship and some other events that are bigger than FNM and I wanted to give this deck a try.
While it's not nearly as fun, or flashy as Casting Bolas and going nuts with him, and then Casting RAL - I think the deck is every bit as good and has potential.
How do you fare against Carnage Tyrant? I both hate and love that card and it seems like it would be a game-breaker for your Grixis Control deck if your opponent draws it. The lack of The Eldest Reborn is striking to me, both from a gameplay standpoint as well as a flavor standpoint.

Vona's Hunger deals with that creature just fine - but also; I recently made an update today and I agree... I've been debating and playing with having x2 Eldest Reborns Main, or in the Side.
Eldest Reborn is a great card with the Control Version and the Win Cons, but Vona's Hunger still deals with Carnage Tyrant efficiently.
I see only one copy of Vona's Hunger in your mainboard. That seems like a weakness against Carnage Tyrant which is now probably going to see multiples in every G/x deck now.
I've actually been mainboarding Duress and it has overperformed for me. With the trends toward bigger Mid-Range decks and with the power of Planeswalkers fully developed there is ALWAYS an excellent chance that a T1 Duress will be able to rip your opponent apart. I had one game where I curved a T1 Duress into a T2 Thought Erasure into a T3 Disinformation Campaign into a T4 Nicol Bolas, the Ravager. Winning was pretty easy when I was able to shred their hand so completely.
Due to MTG Arena, I've actually made the full jump into Standard now and I've been testing a bunch of different Control decks. Jeskai, Dimir, Sultai, Grixis, and Esper are all ones I've tested. I like the Sultai and Grixis versions best so far since Discard effects are pretty premium right now. The Grixis list I've been toying with, for reference, looks like this.
Results have been quite promising with this list. The only games I've substantially lost is when MTG Arena decides to mana screw me. I had one game where I never drew a black source of mana for 7 turns. I think I have a decent chance against every deck that's currently playable and the chances get better after Sideboarding. This list has been wonderful against Jeskai and UW Control decks. The heavy amount of maindeck discard is very relevant against them and it's a struggle for them to defeat Disinformation Campaign eroding their hand nearly every turn with Surveil.
Made an UPDATE to my Control List -- I've pretty much - atleast for now - nixed the Counter Burn list... it's simply not nearly as much fun as jamming Bolas and/or Ral, or even the Disinformation Campaign lists. Much more fun to be had than trying to grind and burn out your opponent.
I'm really HIGH on Discard effects right now - and so I'm examining Disinformation Campaign lists, but also have gone back to my Primary Control list till I iron out the kinks in the Campaign list.
Thought Erasure is a great card out of the board for Grixis Control. IT can target Carnage tyrants and (more importantly in my opinion) Vine Mares out of an opponent's hand until you can get down a non black blocker.
I have been using Nezahal and Niv Mizzet as my finishers against anything playing vinemare and or carnage tyrant.
is it hard to get to 4 lands on turn 4 for your list? other lists have Opt, Discovery, even Thought Erasure as early game selection
4 Chemister's Insight seems like overkill with no easy way to Surveil them away if you're having to fight for your life
the deck looks very top heavy
something like Perilous VoyageRadical Idea
maybe I just don't like the Lightning Strikes
every deck that can run Black seems to love Fungal Infection more and more

4x Dragonskull Summit
1x Memorial to Genius
2x Dimir Guildgate
1x Island
1x Mountain
2x Swamp
1x Niv-Mizzet, Parun
1x Disdainful Stroke
3x Negate
2x Thought Erasure
1x Vona's Hunger
1x Ritual of Soot
1x Lava Coil
4x Moment of Craving
1x Fungal Infection
4 Chemister's Insight seems like overkill with no easy way to Surveil them away if you're having to fight for your life
the deck looks very top heavy
something like Perilous Voyage Radical Idea
maybe I just don't like the Lightning Strikes
every deck that can run Black seems to love Fungal Infection more and more
