I've been experimenting with Enigma Drake since it will be in the next Standard.
Goal: Pump Enigma Drake by putting cards in the graveyard, with Glorybringer as a secondary big dude. This mostly allows for the needed land drops to cast Glorybringer if you can't find an Enigma Drake.
The way I used to win in my deck was Insult // injury and Fling I played it one FNM as a joke but then I kept winning games so I played it for 6 months (before switching to wizards)
I perhaps don't have enough protection for my creatures, but first draft I really just want to show off the decks engine. Decks with a lot of removal seem like they might be a big problem. I think I want disdainful stroke over spell pierce but I am not sure, seal away and opposing lava coils are a big problem. I have the option to run Blink of an eye somewhere and its a good card just no space atm.
I like electrostatic field mostly because it's a really nice wall that does something, perhaps I want Firemind's Research but I'd be worried about getting run over by aggro.
I have actually not used any jump start cards here which is interesting perhaps I should be using it more.
I feel like a more burn-centric version might work better. Your list draws a lot of cards but it doesn't interact much with the opp's and its permanents.
I also think 20 lands is not enough to cast a UURR 4-drop (despite all the cantrips). Mission Briefing is the real deal in a burn version. Risk Factor may be a trap, but if the deck can burn enough, it might be just good enough to see play. If not, Ionize seems playable.
A better card than Lava Coil might be Response // Resurgence, in order to deal with Lyra, Aurelia, potential things that are bigger than the drakes or gain life. Coil could fit better in the SB for specific threats like Conclave Cavalier or reanimation decks.
Between Opt and Discovery, hard to choose !
I also imagine a white splash for Deafening Clarion (main or side), because none of our creatures will die to it, and on the other hand it's gonna win against creature decks on the spot.
What do you think of this :
The problem with that set up and with the white splash is I never want to play double red and double blue cards in the same deck, its just too much torture on a mana base they has to cast a UURR card on turn 4. Briefing could work except that its not really the instant and sorceries they are doing the killing its the creatures.
Shock vs crash through depends on the format, I like the can trip on crash but if we need to pick off llanowar elves shock goes in.
Response is good against lyra which will come up seems like a sideboard option. Ionize is a neat card but I went with stroke over it, it really depends on what the threats of the new format are, I asumed them to be terferi, lyra, contempt and something huge and green. However we are going to have to consider assassins trophy and how that will effect the format.
Its going to be a few weeks before I know what the right combo of spells is.
I am just giving this a bump to see if anyone else has tried it yet.
I saw a version used by starcity but they just played all the 3 drop flyers and I find a complete lack of a curve annoying.
Atm I am 3 sulfur falls and lightning strike short of the deck on Magic Arena. Without spending any money. (I have gone infinite in GRN sealed using the free one from prerelease)
I am going on holiday this month and won't be able to play standard for a month (other than on Arena)
The goal is pretty simple here, disrupt the opponent and dig through the deck to resolve a Drake and use it to close out the game with enough protection (Stormtamer, Dive, Pierce) to keep it alive.
I intentionally kept the curve as low as possible with no cards over 2-cmc besides the drakes to be able to cast multiple spells a turn as quickly as possible and grow the drakes faster.
The goal is pretty simple here, disrupt the opponent and dig through the deck to resolve a Drake and use it to close out the game with enough protection (Stormtamer, Dive, Pierce) to keep it alive.

Even staying low to the ground I think you want to fit Niv-Mizzet into the 75 somewhere. The dude is a beast in any kind of control or midrange matchup. Especially against decks that don't pack Chupacabra.
Basically the deck becomes an Izzet Control deck, taking out drakes and/or electromancers for a very different game. The EFs come in against aggro on the play or against particularly grindy control mirrors where you need to outpace their Niv-Mizzet's damage. The cute part is playing Truefire and Star of Extinction. The star is a boardwipe against Selesnya matches (assuming you get that far) and just combo kills with Truefire Captain on the board. There's enough draw to make it pretty consistent you'll get them into your hand and it's just a matter of holding up protection. Probably too cute to be worth what you have to do to the land base to make it work, but pull it off just once might be worth it.
I still like the transformational plan without the cute.dec. Swap Star and Truefire for a couple of Essence Scatters, more Syncopate, or Fiery Cannonade.
I just got back from my holiday and threw this together for FNM. I managed to pick up that 4th discovery after. My sideboard is trash but I didn't even know what the meta is now. stil... I managed to go 2-2 (which is normal). I punched through jeskai control and Naya tokens (with a little luck) but then just got punked by mono blue aggro he suited up a merfolk trickster with 3x curious obsession and countered all my attempts to kill it. Final match was against the GB explore deck game one he got out 2x varaksa's and game two he slipped one past my disdainful stroke and I just can't deal with them once on board. A little out of practise playing with counterspells.
Because my sideboard is all counter spells I am not sure how much I like all the sorceries in my deck, but they are also really important for set up so I don't know :/. And also I am super tempted to splash black so that I can use dispersal because things like walkers and large creatures are hard to deal with.
Having a whole bunch of 1 ofs that most netdecks seem to have tilts the hell out of me, do you want to draw the card or do you not? argh!.
Went 3-1 but I really need to reconfigure my mana base to run more blue, since I am not running tormenting voice I am definitely blue based, ran into the all red lands a hand filled with blue cards way way too often.
My deck has way more removal and the full 4 disdainful strokes. But without pheonix's it's really hard to kill resolved planeswalkers, so you have to tread carefully midgame.
Atm I have the anti-aggro in the main and the anti-control in the sideboard. If you just don't have enough removal aggro runs you over if you have too much removal I have chart a course and jump start to discard them. I don't want to end up with all those 1 ofs the net decks do.
The control decks seem to be losing to the GB and mono blue decks atm and I am not running into them.
I ended up liking Radical idea more than I expected when I tried it out, I just being able to cycle my lands. however, I do see your point that if I just want a 2 mana instant draw a card anticipate is better.
It works, 3-1 tonight at standard showdown, also good in best of one on Arena. I have been doing better with it than the Pheonix version. Super easy to grind this deck if you are looking for budget options.
I have run into a bunch of online articles suggesting phoenixless versions so I went and tried it
Murmuring mystic has been really good, at first he stabilises with blockers and then you have turns where you can just overwhelm your opponent in birds. Also allows you to generate blockers so you can attack with drakes freely. Niv is really strong but mystic is more likely to leave a mark on your board state and is easier to play and cast a spell in the same turn. Also there are plenty of games where a top deck drake is lethal that you just have to hang on and dig for it and when every dig spell gives you a blocker things are going well.
I bought a phoenix with store credit then won that much store credit again... sadly they only had the one phoenix.

I intentionally kept the curve as low as possible with no cards over 2-cmc besides the drakes to be able to cast multiple spells a turn as quickly as possible and grow the drakes faster.
I'm still not sure if I should up the cantrips count by adding 2x more Discovery // Dispersal or the 8x burn spells should remain.
As a tempo deck I don't have "hard" removal in the maindeck like Lava Coil/Beacon Bolt to avoid having dead cards in control matchups. Blink of an Eye has also underperformed so I took it out of the deck.

Okay what is with the Raptor Hatchlings in the sideboards of all the world magic cup lists. It's nice to be vindicated that pheonixless drakes decks are good by a big tournament even if it's got a weird metagame with unified.
Okay here is my current version pretty similar to the WMC versions but I like murmuring mystic too much to cut him completely and I maximise velocity has won me too many games (and good for picking off planeswalkers).
3-1 at FNM, I finally got to see the raptor hatchling in action against the Token and adanto vanguard decks. I lose game 1 pretty hard but I smashed the post-sideboard games against GW tokens then I got stupidly unluckly against Wr aggro and drew 5 lands in a row and falling 1 damage short (When all I needed was 1 instant and sorcery)
Welcome Pteramander they are great particularly for enabling chart a course.
So the deck didn't do well at the mythic championship, the only deck in the top lists from the mythic champs was a Jeskai controlling list with no Pteramander but Niv mizzets and a total of 4 deafening clarion in the 75.
I get completely destroyed by the gates deck though I just have no idea how to beat it.
The nexus decks are tough, we aren't quite fast enough, I had to put in some negate into the side to try to deal with them, so now I have a lot of cards for control now.
But putting in more cards for controlling decks means I had to cut the raptor hatchlings which are amazing against white aggro and tokens or any adanto vanguard decks.
I've been messing around with Drakes quite a bit recently. Started with straight Izzet, and it was good, but like you mentioned, I got wrecked by Gates. Mono Red was no picnic either. Like it wasn't unfavorable, but they are able to get me down low enough that I had to worried about being finished off with Burn. I moved into Temur Drakes, and that was really good. The ramp from Growth Spiral got me to my Crackling Drakes faster, my Niv's faster, and being in green allowed me to run Hydroid Krasis for late game gas/mid game life gain.
But then I ran into Esper Control, and they relentlessly, wrecked me. Discard was just too good. Drawing a Niv or a Ral before I could cast them just meant I was SOL.
So I pivoted once more to Grixis Drakes. This has been, by far, the best iteration of drakes I've played. I haven't played Jeskai, but I'm not sure what Jeskai offers, aside from Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, that's better than Thought Erasure and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager. I can say, though, that since switching to Grixis, I haven't lost to any of the matchups I was beating before in Izzet and Temur, but now I crush Esper Control too. It feels significantly stronger.

Siren Stormtamer also seems better than Goblin Electromancer as it can protect the drakes and chip in from the air.
I'd also play some number of Spell Pierce and Dive Down to protect my threats and Lightning Strike for reach/removal.

I've decided to update the deck and since one of its issues has been low threat density I've decided to address it by adding Quasiduplicate to the deck instead of my previous idea of using cheap spells like Dive Down/Spell Pierce to protect my threats.
