So, I came back to magic in April of this year after an 8 year hiatus and already building my favorite U/W control deck for standard, and next a Mono-Red aggro deck also for standard I am up to my 3rd deck in as many months.
I came back right when Amonkhet came out and one card that I fell in love with even during spoiler season was Champion of Rhonas. But because everyone was going crazy over Aetherworks marvel decks no one wanted to use another way to get creatures into play for free, now that is out of the way it's time for this champion to rise up and pick up the mantle.
I was wondering what kind of deck he would fit in and realized that a straight up aggro probably wouldn't work, but a more midrange tempo based deck may work for him. The next choice was what creatures he would like to work with, and as you will see by this deck the choices are varied.
Without further ado here is my build as of right now, it is in beta and the sideboard is all over the place.
The deck works by ramping mana to get a turn 3 Champion out, and exert it on turn 4 and drop some big creature out onto the battlefield.
Aside from that, it works as a toolbox, if you can get Razaketh out on turn 4 via the champion then you can search for any other card in your deck that you may need to speed up your win.
The way to disrupt your opponent is by using Consign // Oblivion or Commit // Memory or even a turn 4 Confiscation Coup to get something that they have on the board.
As for lands...they are all over the place because I only have 2 Aether hubs and only 1 botanical sanctum and don't plan on purchasing more either. The cascading cataracts are there to make sure we can cast any card in our deck or in the sideboard mid game.
Sideboard...it's a mess and all over the place but this deck is in beta mode right now with no testing so of course, it looks strange.
I will post more info after I do more testing, but so far I am really liking this deck.
Let me know what you think!
