Super annoyingly I don't have the Spirebluff canal so I can't play in the GPT tomorrow or my weekly standard night tuesday :'(, rotation is super annoying trying to get lands just so I can play.
There are million ways to change the deck, how about I just run a simple removal in select and more burn'n draw with showdown.
You may not believe it, but Sanguinary Mage makes a pretty decent replacement for Thing in the Ice. It doesn't have the bomb ability, but it is surprisingly effective early, especially when you are using burn to kill their creatures.
You would probably need to replace select for inspection with Harnessed Lightning and 2 Aether Hubs +2 Mountains where Spirebluff Canal is but cutting down to just the Fevered Visions and a couple Unsubstantiates should let you cut down on your blue sources. The Aether Hubs only give one use for color, but that should be enough.

You mean Stormchaser Mage, right? As in the one that costs the same mana and has same stats and abilities but also has flying and haste?

His problem is he doesn't have any Spirebluff Canal so Stormchaser leaves him in the same spot as Thing in the Ice. Sometimes budget and access to cards limits choices, so you have to make do.

Oh.. Well the even easier fix it to play monored instead.
Or to try to make a budget UR manabase that can still cast Thing on turn 2. e.g.
Would that give him reliable enough blue mana? Evolving Wilds is also an option.
Basically, I think he should either make a budget UR manabase that can still cast Thing or drop blue completely. Replacing Thing with a red card but still playing a UR deck seems bad.
Either the budget manabase is "good enough" (slightly less consistent but still supports the deck's spells) or it's not. If it's not good enough, reducing the blue spell count doesn't help. He can try to play a watered down version of Fevered Visions, but it won't be able to consistently cast its blue spells on curve. Even if the count of those blue spells is lower, you still don't want to be casting Unsubstantiate or Fevered Visions only on turn 7. And then you can't properly test the sideboard options because you won't be able to use the blue cards on tempo as expected. At that point, your deck is not competitive or even good data for testing. He'd be better off taking something else to a GPT (e.g. mono colored deck).
On the other hand, if the budget manabase is "good enough", then just play Thing and the other cards you want to play. If he can cast Fevered Visions on turn 3, he can probably still run Thing.
But using Aether Hubs, is a 1 use that allows for play on curve if the blue mana isn't there turn 1 which makes the use of 6 blue spells in deck rather than 12 important. If Aether Hub is the blue source and you have in hand or draw into it on turn 2 or 3, it allows for the play of a Sanguinary Mage and a Fevered Visions on curve. If you have a Stormchaser Mage and a Fevered Visions, you can only play 1 on curve and have to hope you got a land that came in tapped if you want to play the other on turn 4. Fumarole, and Highland lake coming in on turn 2 or 3 both enter the battlefield tapped so that puts you off a turn, as would Evolving Wilds. Aether Hub fits the needs of the Spirebluff for 1 use on turn 2 or 3 and when only 6 spells are blue, 1 use is all you are going to need the majority of the time. However, if you are running 12 blue spells then the % of time you have 2 blue spells to cast over the first 3 turns almost triples.
I don't own any Aether Hub either, I have a quadrillion evolving wilds so for the moment I put a few of those in and I have just been goldfishing all weekend, (I ended up not going to the GPT but I will likely head to standard on Tuesday),
getting blue hasn't been that hard, but I am not sure how the ETB tapped lands will effect my ablity to win games though.
I can't imagine playing the deck without blue, Fevered visions is the reason it works at all.
Adding to the list of werid card availbility I own 3-4 thing in the ice and about 2 stormchaser mage. Because I hated the BFZ block and enjoyed Shadows addtiontally people bring rares to trade but never uncommons. The people at the SCG tournament are going with Stormchasers from what I have seen.

Emphasis mine.
Smuggler's Copters are everywhere, so Stormchaser Mage is the better choice since it can block it with even just one spell. Galvanic Bombardment + Stormchaser will destroy the Copter.
Considering there is only one in the top 64 I don't think people have found the right build yet perhaps next week it will be better refined
(I swear if I have another deck I pick because it isn't rotating stop being viable because of meta change I'll quit standard, it is too hard to switch decks every 3 (6) months)
Thing in the ice brings a lot more power to the table, I am going to have to see it failing to want to cut it.
I think that the URx Thermo decks have enough choices that it'll stay competitive for a while. Right now, the current builds are not well-positioned because of the influx of aggro everywhere. Fevered Visions, in particular, helps low to the ground aggro more than it hurts them. The deck just doesn't do well against swarms of aggro creatures, and Copter is a problem. Three toughness is now the magic number.
With that in mind, I'd think that Weaver of Lightning deserves a shot at main deck status. He has reach to block the Copter, and he gives that crucial power boost to the first Galvanic Bombardment to kill things. He also kills servos and thopters quite effectively. Thing in the Ice is objectively more powerful, but it can't block flying.
I also think that Unsubstantiate is highly underrated since it can temporarily stop almost anything. Returning a Copter to someone's hand is a big deal since it doesn't have haste, and they've tapped down potential blockers to Crew it.

The world is on fire
and you are here to stay and burn with me.
I agree with the need for answers to Smuggler's Copter. And you may actually want to board out Fevered Visions against aggro decks. Maybe Weaver of Lightning in the SB (kills a lot of their X/1s too).
Select for Inspection is pretty decent for 1-mana. You can bounce the Copter after they crew and attack (wasting their creature), making them have to recast Copter again, wait a turn, and crew it again. Pretty good tempo for 1 mana. And scry!
If you're using Aether Hub for mana, +4 Harnessed Lightning. 3 is the magic number. And instant speed, unlike a lot of your burn.
Hello! Here is the version i have been testing. I went 3-0 at a smaller event (6-0) in games with wins against GW aggro, Zombies, and BW conrol. I have also been play-testing very well against the Wx aggressive builds. I made my version much lower to the ground than the version I had before rotation, focusing on cards like Spark of Creativity and Renegade Tactics. I originally had Chandra in the main but against the aggro builds I found having 4 visions and 2 chandras lead to a lot of dead cards so I kept the visions main and moved the chandra to the side in the spot that was previously occupied by castigator. I also added two Jori En, Ruin Diver to the main and cut down on lands, with the lower cost cantrips the card draws smooth out the lands and help to have a storm-esque turn with the alchemists and/or Stormchaser mage. I can Also see a very strong argument for Harnessed Lightning, especially with smuggler's copter being so dominant, but I prefer the ability to hit opponent in face with temper or defiance which is why it is not in my list.
looking at the number of vehicles deck in the open, i feel that having thing to flip and return both their crewed vehicles and creatures would be a big tempo swing against those decks. Maybe relegate visions to the board and play full playsets of things and stormchaser mages in the main?
Anyone saw that 23rd place list of UR Fevered Visions from this weekend's SCG? I liked how it generally works and tweaked it to my preference. Here is my list now:
Some points regarding my list:
1. I LOVE THE 4X FLAME LASH! I felt that the deck really needed that extra 16 points of damage.
2. 4x Bombardment maindeck isn't so bad considering all the aggro decks early in Standard, especially the Vehicles.
3. Axe and Wrath in the SB come in vs. aggro and possibly mirror.
4. Castigators and Reveler come in vs. Ramp and Control.
5. Negates, Summary Dismissal and Pieces of the Puzzle come in vs. Control.
5. Spell Shrivels and Summary Dismissal will help vs. creature-based midrange decks.
I think the big thing going for Stormchaser is that it blocks flyers like Copter (if you cast a spell) and actually kills X/1 attackers (e.g. Bomat Courier), unlike your 0/X guys. Is Thing too slow? It just blocks on the ground and flips turn 4 at the earliest. Maybe that's still fast enough if you run enough instant enablers to flip on their turn.
If you're considering Radiant Flames for X=2, why not just play Kozilek's Return? At least you can cast it as an instant and respond to haste and flash creatures too.
The guy using the budget manabase with Aether Hubs could run Flames for X=3 for profit (although it kills Thermo).
Price of Kozilek's return: $11
Price of radiant flames: 50c
... how much is instant speed worth?
I know I am a bit of a pain with card availability issues but I am basically playing aether hub so I can get to X = 3 if needed. last time I played flames, thalia's leuteniant just got everyone out of range fast.
My problem with Fevered Visions is that it is a double-edged sword that can bite us and help the opponent (especially vs. aggro), so I'm thinking Dynavolt tower can be an interesting option. With a lot of 2 mana spells we would have a good use for 2R from Chandra, Torch of Defiance on turn 4. I am not fully convinced about the Combustible Gearhulk, but am not sure what to run instead. Thought Rise from the Tides, but it seems much too slow, and you don't even get a blocker out of it. I thought of running Fateful Showdown, but that does not work too well without many draws... Also thought of putting 4xFlame Lash, but I have no idea what to cut for it, and I have the feeling I'd use Collective Defiance if I need to remove something x/4...
Still need to playtest it, but all comments are welcome.
I agree that versus aggro fevered visions is very often a dead draw; however, against any other non aggro deck it flat out can win the game. I think the meta is going to react to the aggro decks by having the right answers rather than trying to race. And in my testing we still have plenty of answers to the aggro builds pre board and can easily win post board.
So I still really like spark of creativity, and although jori en and renegade tactics worked will for me, they seem to help strong matches and not do much for the weak ones so this week I'm going to try harnessed lightning aether hub package against the current meta. So here is the variant I'm going to try.
I went looking for things to pop the copter and wow, there is not a single shatter effect in standard for red. Its either go to 4 for demolish or play worse torch fiend in kaladesh whoes name I have forgotten.
That is kind of messed up, just like how there is 0 good grave hate.

Specifically said in my post that YOU should play Radiant Flames and the OTHER GUY without Aether Hubs and without budget manabase should play Kozilek Return...
Here's another thing. Do we have a decent instant speed draw? I find myself sometimes wasting a turn waiting to burn stuff / counter and when it does not happen I could draw at least. Thinking of replacing Reunion...

anticipate, or glimmer of genius (if you can reliably get to 4cmc)
I play Insolant Neonite in the 1 drop slot to help stem early pressure and to give me a manaless discard outlet.
And anyone else think Noose Constrictor is an idea worth exploring? Something about a fast clock that can ouch the madness theme and really does a great job against Copter. I used to run Radiant Flames as my sweeper so 3 colors isn't nuts. This deck doesn't mind the fast lands so Botanical Garden wouldn't be a huge issue.
In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.
