I thought about Spawning Bed but its very expensive to get its effect (7 mana effectively). We don't really need any ramp after then, and only produces 1 more token than Foundry of Consuls, which has an advantage of being cheaper to activate, as well as producing Artifact (relevant for granting haste with Engineer) Thopters (evasion). Possibly worth testing. But I feel like 4 Foundrys is fine and the better card overall.
Abbey isn't great in this deck -- mostly win-more. If you have a well-established board presence you're probably already winning that game anyway. Your creatures are really good.
I agree that Abbey feels unnecessary. I don't have one yet so I've been testing with two Sea Gate Wreckage and a one-of Rogue's Passage, which seems pretty good since it can send Thought-Knot Seer through blockers to kill opposing 'walkers.
I've tested more than 50 games now running 2 Abbey, and it works well to scare your opponent, but I've never actually found a good spot yet to sac 5 permanents and flip it. I might just cut to 1 Abbey. I imagine it could have utility in a drawn out game where you've been saccing Foundrys, have Thopter Engineers, and P&K, and blown up Hangarback. Probably worth at least 1 slot just as an additional wincon to break up board stalls.
Similarly, I'll be sticking with Mono R to start with. I did start trading to get some of the W pieces anyways incase I decide to jump on that wagon - Displacers, Needle Spires, and Declaration in Stones namely. I don't think 4 Westvale is where this deck wants to be at, but 2-3 is good.
Round 1 vs R/W Eldrazi
Game 1: I curve out faster and clear his board with Chandra then beat down with Chandra tokens and a few creatures.
SIDEBOARD
+3 Obligator, +3 Roast
-2 Hangarback, -1 Warping Wail, -2 Spatial Contortion, -1 Pia and Kiran
Game 2: I again curve out quicker than him though its a closer game. Not much to say really. We play stuff, my Ruins pumped by Aggregate/Smasher bigger than his (he had to cut utility lands for the white splash). I was able to sac my foundry for chump blockers while he couldn't afford to run so many Foundrys either.
In both games he either sequenced his land drops wrong or the tapped lands from Needle Spires were doing a number on him slowing everything of his down by an extra turn. Makes me still wonder how good the splash of White would be - it is not a free splash by any means.
Round 2 vs Mono-G Ramp
Game 1: I get a turn 2 Hedron Crawler into T3 TKS and strip his only useful card. I Smasher next turn as well and he dies shortly after.
Game 2: I have a much slower start and he gets a Gaea's Revenge out which I just have no way of dealing with. He drops an Endless one for 7 which I was able to steal the following the turn with Obligator (can't steal Gaea), but he had an open Elvish Visionary to block. He also had a Rogue's Passage out so had lethal after a couple turns.
Game 3: I have a much quicker start with T2 Crawler into T3 TKS and T4 Smasher and T5 Chandra. Game ends right there.
Round 3 vs B/R Eldrazi Aggro
Game 1: He curves out way too quick and beats down hard. I don't manage to recover.
Game 2 and 3: I play extremely cautiously and defensively until he's nearly out of cards then I gradually start swinging in. Slowly and steadily chipping away at him and leaving back 1-2 blockers every time. K-return gets him for a 3 for 1 in Game 3 as well.
Still really liking Mono-R Eldrazi. I have all the cards for the white splash now, but still going to stick with the consistency here for now.
I am planning on playing either mono red or R/W eldrazi at GP Toronto, and I want to know people's opinions on the human aggro matchup. I feel like there will either be a ton of human decks, or the meta will shift by then. One thing I am considering is playing a number of main deck Twin Bolt, because it can be a 2 for 1 a lot of times against aggro decks, and it is also never a dead card in any match since it can just burn the opponent.
I am here to tell you that going to red white is a mistake and your matchup vs bant company and tokens are in your favor. I have playtested alot and went 4-0 tonight at FNM. Went up vs two bant company decks, one green white token and mono white humans deck. Bant companys mana is shaky. Multiple times my opponents had there lands come into play tapped which would absolutely kill there tempo. This is why I believe you can not go RW. This will make your mana less consistent which is one of your advantages against bant company. Your lands are so good and you will rarely get color screwed. Chandra and sideboard all star rending volley do wonders against bant company and humans. Killing humans on turn one and two was absoultely devastating. I believe this style of deck needs to be as aggressive as possible to exploit bant companys land woes. You do not need to have an answer to every single threat in the format. You just need to be creative. For example against green white tokens he was able to get off ormendahl which I have no answer for in my deck. I was able to go around it by blocking with thopter tokens and sacking them with Pia's ability before damage resolved. I eventually burned him out with enough token sacrifices. To conclude I think that mono red eldrazi is well positioned right now in this type of format and would be a good deck choice for the next upcoming tournaments.
I just came back from playing a local GPT and went undefeated with Mono R Eldrazi. Played vs Bant Company (2-0), Simic Part the Waterveil (2-0), Azorius Humans (2-1), W/B Control (2-1), and mono W humans (2-1). Split in the top 4. I've played the "mirror" vs RW Eldrazi and won 2-0 in a previous outting as well, so I'm not convinced that either the white splash is "basically free" or that it is definitively better than the consistency you get with mono R.
I see Akoum Firebird in the sideboard, what matchup is that for?
It was mostly because I did not have my 3rd Goldnight Castigator yet. Any matchup where I want to increase my early pressure I brought Castigator and Firebird in. Akoum is close to an Ashcloud Phoenix impression with its recurring nature, though only 3 power is a bad tradeoff for more toughness. It's a worse version of Goldnight Castigator in most cases, but can be recurred in a pinch lategame (never came up for me - or I always declined it's trigger to use my mana elsewhere anyways)
@Effort9 - cool dude. Tell us about your games against Bant Company and W/b Control.
I didn't take notes so I don't remember much detail. It might have just been WG now that I think about it. Never even saw a CoCo or Reflector Mage.
vs Bant/WG Company?:
Game 1: He hard-cast a Den Protector T2, then played a morph (Raptor) T3. I Spatial Contortioned the morph. I don't remember exactly what played out here but he got an Avacyn and Duskwatch Recruiter out in the next few turns. I killed Avacyn with an Outnumber (she didn't flip). Then I had Reality Smasher and Chandra to close the game.
SIDEBOARD
OUT: -1 Warping Wail, -1 Hangarback
IN: +1 Tears of Valakat, +1 Eldrazi Obligator (didn't feel like I needed to side in much here)
Game 2: I had an early Hedron Crawler into TKS and saw a hand of 2 Tireless Tracker, 1 Dromoka Command, 1 Avacyn. I exiled Avacyn (not sure if right or not, just didn't want to deal with her). He didn't pressure me any and I won through Reality Smasher or Aggregate and Chandra beatdowns again.
To be fair he either drew poorly or I completely misread what his deck was. Might have just been WG "good stuff" since I didn't even see CoCo or Reflector Mage. He had the typical shell otherwise.
vs B/W Control
Game 1: Everything I played he exiled pretty easily, or after exiling he would use Wasteland Stranger to process and kill something else of mine. He kept making land drops and got Sorin down on T6. I couldn't get Sorin off the table and lost to his constant +1 activations. I remember one turn he plused Sorin to reveal Ob Nixilis so I take 5, then he played Ob Nixilis and -3 kills my Reality Smasher.
Game 2/Game 3: Details are very fuzzy here. Don't remember much. He did his usual remove my stuff as per W/B control usual. I won through some mix of Goldnight Castigator, Akoum Firebird, Vile Aggregate and Smasher. Games weren't even close in 2 and 3 - I had explosive draws and he couldn't deal with them all. Never saw a Languish. It was just stuff like T4 I play Castigator and attack, he then plays Gideon and +s to put it to 5. I top-deck the land needed to play Reality Smasher and kill his Gideon while hitting him again with Castigator.
I casually played vs W/B control (during a I.D. round since I wasn't doing anything else really) with a friend of mine earlier and he swept me 2-0 pretty easily there. He might have been playing a better tuned list, or the one I played in the Top 8 might have drawn poorly in games 2 and 3 while I drew well.
From what most people are saying Bant Company seems a very tough matchup. I don't have enough games in against it to say much. Hell, I'm not even that experienced with this Mono R deck.
I think Outnumber is our premium removal now over Roast since it kills archangel of freaking tithes. I think 3 outnumber and 2 spatial contortion is a good main deck removal package.
You may also want to consider Burn from Within. It can be used as early as t2 and has a special clause regarding indestructible.
If you are referring to Avacyn by mentioning indestructible you can always kill her in response to the ETB trigger also it's tough to commit that much mana with an aggro deck who would like to play threats every turn.
Effort9 - thanks for the detailed post of your match ups. It appears you sideout Hangarback. That is typical in my games as well and I am wondering how good Hangarback even is at this point. Although in Red Eldrazi it is better because of PKN and Vile Aggregate.
Roast I never even touched throughout the weekend. I can easily see shaving its slots (only bring it in vs the mirror anyways - and Obligators do fine there in the first place). Outnumber has been fantastic. For taking out Tithes I often end up doing it with a mix of Chandra -X for 1 or 2 and a Spatial Contortion or Outnumber for the remainder. That or I can end of turn crack Foundry of Consuls to get 2 more creatures on board, then Outnumber with hopefully enough creatures.
Not really feeling it with Burn from Within. Sorcery and upwards of 6-7 mana to kill some of the threats we want.
