I just had a very successful weekend (won a 26 players FNM and finished 2nd at a 73 man tournament on saturday) with Gr Devotion, when there aren't many control lists in your meta, this deck is still VERY good. It is just the superior midrange deck against most of the field when built correctly (at least 2 arbor colossus in the 75 for the many dragons for example) and has a very good postboard matchup against mono red aswell. Abzan aggro can be tough, but with a decent draw you're still superior most of the time (would say its 55 / 45 matchup in our favor).
Hey guys, been playing Gr Devotion more lately and having quite a bit of success. It seems like pros are also thinking that Gr Devotion is a good deck considering the showing in Columbus right now.
What are your guy's thoughts on Crater's Claws, a strong win con that is not seeing much play anymore. I'm just curious as to why, I have been in many games where we sit in a stalemate because I can't swing into him or him into me, a claws draw at any point would've sealed the game. Why is it that people are steering away when it's a good way to break stalemates?
I can see where there are times when Polukranos, World Eater is my way to break open the stalemates but maybe it's because they have never lived long enough for me to put them to good use.
How do you get stalemates if your creatures don't survive?
I think Crater's Claws is most useful in the mirror type matches. Maybe that hasn't been a major consideration lately. Probably will change after this weekend.

Well, not ALL my creatures die just the major ones. Maybe I'm just not doing something right, I don't know. The stalemates usually come from the Abzan matchups. They usually stave off my early aggression and start picking up their tempo and once they hit an Elspeth, Sun's Champion, the true grind begins. If you've seen some of my matches, the boards are usually just flooded and we just sit and stare at one another. I had a game where the opponent was able to get to the final level of Warden of the First Tree and just keep adding 5 counters but never hit me cause I was so flooded and any attack from me would give me less toughness to stop the trample and other creatures giving him lethal.
Yea, most of the time an Elspeth lands they slowly gain the advantage, but sometimes I get lucky and topdeck a Dragonlord Atarka to blow it up and slowly go back to the grind if they kill it afterwards.
So looking at say, Chris Vanmeter's deck from Columbus because I like his creature base a little bit more. I was thinking maybe take out an Atarka and a Hornet Queen from the mainboard because I feel like those are the late game cards that tend to be the least useful during the stalemates, at least for me anyways and then adding in two Claws. Also, they are sort of like Claws in the sense that they would be the ones that I side out first for the faster aggro decks and control.
The other line of thought is taking out an Atarka and a Deathmist Raptor for the two Claws.
I can see g/r being the new flavor of the month so craters claws may not be a bad idea to sideboard for the mirror. I wonder why the Virginia guys decided it wasn't a good card to play especially since they knew g/r would be all over the place. My guess is it's considered a "win more" card and could be a dead card against most decks that can remove your large threats, specifically control
The card that usually is not a part of devotion builds is Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I feel like it was the card that G/W Devotion builds lacked - it provides amazing win condition, she can turn back game vs midrange that went badly, makes tokens which boost mastery lifegain and mana gain from Xenagos, the Reveler. Interaction with Xenagos is the most valuable. Elspeth also does break mirror matchups.
The hard part for me is building a sideboard. So far I have banishing light for matchups where i need removal for key parts of other decks like Whip of Erebos or big, pumped Favored Hoplite. Other parts of sideboard are just replacement to make the deck more like typical midrange with strong, big value creatures, also including Arashin Cleric for mono-red matchup. What do you think?
(I'm aware of Den/Raptor being a thing, I can't see what to take out in their place though, maybe put them in sideboard?)
I would not like my chances against UB Control or Esper Dragons. Nor would I like my chances vs Mardu Dragons. Am I being especially pessimistic or are these tough matches?

I see your point about Esper. I'd still be worried about Thunderbreak/Stormbreath decks, especially if they are backed up with a couple Dragonlords. I think Gr Devotion is generally weak to fliers.

Just sharing some thoughts or ideas on the deck. I know it is not a typical GR Devotion these days, but I'm trying to work around devotion for quicker ramp, constellation for card advantage and win with Dragon Tempest-Descent of the Dragons combo. The best so far is T4 Hornet Queen, T5 Dragon Tempest and Descent of the Dragons for 36 damage.

I think you could benefit running den protector , having some ability to recur you few top end threats in case of discard or counter magic. The jeskai ascendancy combo that splashes g is highly annoying with the den protector in.
how are you finding the shrines? if your using shrines wouldn't voyaging satyr be better than rattle claw? or leave in the rattle claws and swap the shrines for a more consistent mana base?
it would be easy splash minor blue for sideboard options
FNM report, 3-0-1.
Round 1 vs. Abzan Aggro 2-0.
Round 2 vs. Jeskai Aggro 2-0.
Round 3 vs. Abzan Aggro 1-1. Game 1 lost, mull to 6 and slow start. A long and close win in game 2. Not enough time to proceed game 3, so we chose to draw instead.
Round 4 vs. Jund Megamorph 2-0.
Managed to pull off Dragon Tempest / Descent of the Dragons combo basically in every game. The highest damage dealt was 49 damage ETB trigger, and the closest one was the last round. Game 1 his life was at 29 from Whip of Erebos, I was at 2 life and dealt 36 damage ETB trigger. Game 2 same I was at 2 life, 5 lands and 3 Sylvan Caryatid, cast both Dragon Tempest and Descent of the Dragons same turn and win for 9 damage ETB trigger, 12 combat damage with him all tapped out.
All in all, it was a combination of dragons combo, devotion ramp in a constellation shell. Some minor adjustment I think I would make is that, to have Dragonlord Dromoka in the main. The lifelink, uncounterable and locking opponent to play spell during our turn seems like essential, allowing to combo off easily or otherwise, as a threat magnet to distract while we are setting up a one hi KO win.
It looks a little light on red mana for double red Descent, but maybe the Caryatids and Rattleclaw Mystics get you past that?
Are there matches where you would abandon the Descent combo?
Agreed. There are times where I'm stuck on single red when I could cast Descent and win.
The Descent combo is the easiest way to win. Right now it is the least expected in any matches so I tried to take this opportunity. I wouldn't abandon the combo, but you can still win without it. At the very least, I could turn 2-3 mana dorks into dragons and that puts quite a pressure to the opponent. Descent turns dorks, bees into powerful dragons. Dragon Tempest still provides haste to Hornet Queen and the Dragonlords.
I'm considering this deck for some time, has anyone considered cards like Nissa Vastwood Seer, Woodland Bellower, Animist's Awakening or some of the other cards from origins?

I went with 4 Wooded Foothills, 4 Rugged Highlands, 4 Temples, 9 Forest, 2 Mountain and have been having no trouble with mana. I don't really think Nykthos is that necessary, the idea isn't to get lots of mid- to late-game mana, it's to ramp quickly to finish the game. The dorks and Frontier Siege do that well.
I've played only against a Jeskai Dragons deck, no SB, and have gone 8-2. Hornet Queen is essentially an instant win for me. Post-SB, Anger of the Gods would cause me troubles.
I was skeptical of both Hornet Queen and Atarka, thinking maybe I would replace those with Thunderbreak Regent and Xengoes, the Reveler. But, as I said, Hornet Queen has been amazing (and I think will be good against more than just the Jeskai Deck I have been facing).
I have comboed only a couple of times and never especially early. I think once was Turn 6.

I don't have specific sideboard in any particular matchup, but my main concern is against red aggro and control decks. Hornet Nest for red aggro and the rest for control. Xenagos, the Reveler and Whisperwood Elemental is good against control as they're 2 for 1 card. Either counter it or they need a sweeper. When they run out of spot removals, Dragonlord Dromoka is great against them.

I don't really think Nykthos is that necessary, the idea isn't to get lots of mid- to late-game mana, it's to ramp quickly to finish the game. The dorks and Frontier Siege do that well.

Turn 6 is good enough. I myself once turn 5 the fastest. This is best when you're against a devotion or abzan aggro as they are lacking of fliers. Either drop Dragon Tempest and Descent in 2 separate turns, or have 8 mana to win instantly. But yeah, I think Nykthos isn't that necessary. I may cut a couple to have more red source. I found myself lost a turn or two just to find another red mana.
So after testing it for a bit, I also agree that Nykthos isn't the most useful in this deck.
I wanted to try instead to splash that little white for Dragonlord Dromoka to do so I've done the following changes to the main/side board:
-2 Nykthos and -1 Forest in favor of +1 Windswept Heath, +1 Plains and +1 Dragonlord Dromoka all to the main.
Maybe it was just me and some bad draws but I also felt myself getting land flooded when I already have a Frontier Siege out or just mana dorks, so I think that 22 lands would be plenty. I do find myself sometimes missing one red source in order to cast the Descent but very rarely. If anything I would get rid of the last two Nykthos in favor of +2 Rugged Highlands or +1 Forest and +1 Mountain.
I also threw in +2 Dromoka's Command into the side to replace the Plains and a Dragonlord Dromoka because it's just such a strong card and I think it will be useful.
Also how would you guys side out for certain matchups?
For control I feel like taking out the Atarka's and Hornet Queens and maybe just even the entire combo for all the Planeswalkers, Whisperwood and the other Dragonlord Dromoka because after game one I feel like we lose our surprise factor (if we get it) and if we don't and still lost, that's just as bad it seems.
For anything aggro-y I presume it would be the Atarka's out in favor of the Hornet Nest and maybe a Dragon Tempest or two, maybe even a Descent for (with my change) the Hornest Nest and Dromoka's Command and if I can squeeze it in somewhere, the other Dragonlord Dromoka because I feel like another one with lifelink and stopping their instants is good against aggro as much as control.
I still feel a little iffy on this deck in the sense that this deck won't really match up well to the more cookie cutter decks. I understand that this deck is more gimmicky and a surprise factor but I'm just not sure. I really want to try this deck out because it seems fun and a little different from the meta right now which is why I wanna try and somewhat perfect this for the coming FNM. I'm sort of happy with the build I got going here but I just wanted to get some feedback on what you guys think I can improve on.
I took afosz's list (minus the white) to fnm yesterday. Very small event, only 13 players. First tound bye (grrr), beat mono red impact tremors twice, lost to Abzan Control (main deck Crux).
Won 3 out of the 4 games against mono red by comboing, the other win also involved Descent into a bunch of dragons, just not the combo. I think against this slightly slow mono red, we're pretty well placed.
The Abzan Control games were meh. Flooded in one game and still had chances, the other was very close.
