Just wondering if anyone has tested out Clever Impersonator in their 75. For 4cmc, it doesn't seem like that bad of an option. I personally have not, but I think I will as a 2-of just to see what it can do.
I use it as a 1-of in the board, it's fun to copy an opponent's Elspeth, then kill theirs.

you don't really want permanents with Perilous Vault. The only reason Ashiok is played is because it comes down early, is so strong, and Vault can be activated with it on the stack.
Impersonator just isn't strong enough and doesn't go well with Vault.
I'm thinking of cutting a Sphinx out of Sullivan's SB for either another Thoughtseize or a 3rd Disdainful Stroke. I rarely bring Sphinx in as I don't see much Mardu or R/G Monsters anymore and most Abzan Decks don't run Wingmate Roc anymore. I guess U/W Control might be seeing an uptick where Sphinx is good as they usually board out End Hostilities but that matchup for us is easy anyway.

Why bring in Sphinx against Mardu? It turns on their Crackling Dooms.

It blocks Stormbreath and Sarkhan. If they see you playing Ashiok there is a chance they SB out Doom. I've seen Sullivan play against Mardu on stream and he SB'd in both Sphinx against his Mardu opponent.
I don't think many abzan reanimator decks play ashen rider. Maybe as a 1-2 of in really greedy builds. Disdainful stroke and perilous vault tear that deck apart.
Clever Impersonator is average in the deck much like how Clone effects are bad in general. If you're copying a creature, then it suffers from the same problems that Clone always had. If you're not copying a creature, then you have to think about what non-creature permanents are worth copying:
Whip of Erebos - We can't use the activated ability profitably, and the lifelink is negligible in those matchups.
Banishing Light - We can only copy this if we give them something to target with it (most likely the Ashiok versions of the deck). It's okay, but mana inefficient. We probably don't want a 4 mana sorcery speed removal spell.
Sarkhan/Elspeth/Chandra/Nissa - None of these should probably hit the table and survive long enough for it to be our turn again. We'll always be 1 tick behind in the race, and there is really no point. Maybe lategame when we can play impersonator + downfall their PW, but that doesn't seem worth it.
I've played with clever impersonator before, but there has never really been any moments where I'm excited about him in my hand. If I'm copying a creature, I'm never going to win the attacking race because our life total is likely lower than theirs. If I'm copying a utility non-permanent spell, I probably can't use it as well as they do. If I'm copying a planeswalker with removal spell backup, then it's average at best.
I am a dedicated control player, this is my current list. A few comments on my own list:
Three is the correct number of perilous vault, it is situational and although a great card can clog your hand.
Drown in sorrow is a maindeck card, most decks are playing rabblemaster or tokens or hornet queen its rarely a dead card, having said that I think 3 is the correct number, I do find myself having an extra copy in hand at times. I would want the 4th in the sideboard.
The 4th dig through time is sometimes a bit much. I love 3 jaces ingenuity. Ive been playing Jim Davis' UW control to get an idea of the "other" control deck and I really like his card draw setup of 3 Jaces, 3 Dig, 2 Divination. Im considering dropping a dig and a drown for 2 divination to mirror this setup.
The mana is correct. I like the extra fetches (E Wilds) to act as color fixing. Ive tried zero through 4 of radiant fountain and settled on 3. That is the correct number.
I hate Ashiok, Im a Cuneo fanboi and hate the fact that Im playing it but its such an awesome card in this format. After trying desperately to not play it (hundreds of games) I cant stop running the full 4. The first one usually wins you the game on the spot or dies on the spot...you need 2nd 3rd or 4th to stick and you win. I stopped playing lilliana because she rarely did anything that another good card couldnt. Using her for a tutor for a counterspell is dumb, just stay untapped (safer) and draw three cards (jaces ingenuity)
Ive played 50 or so games with Ali's 4 thoughtseize 4 despize 4 cruise 4 dig deck and hated it, grats to him for doing well in that tournament but I think its waayyy too much, looks good on paper though. I love the 2 despise maindeck, its perfect, it gives me information occasionally and ive tried many many games with them as thoughtseize and the 2 damage is very relevant. I usually gain 6 life per match off the land and that gives me a good buffer, thoughtseize removes any advantage that those lands give me. Having said that, I would like to find room in the sideboard for a few copies against slower decks and or the mirror.
Ive been playing the stain the mind and love it, exile whip or ashcloud phoenix or elspeth or sorin etc. not sure if I would want a second or not. The doomwakes have been a hedge against the jeskai token deck thats all over the place and Ive been firmly crushing it.

The murk lurkers are for any sort of jeskai.
What do you guys think?
2 Doomwakes in the SB seems very excessive. You already have lots of things to deal with tokens between your main deck and sideboard. I would rather have something like 2 Prognostic Sphinx to help against midrange and the mirror.

4 drown in sorrows in the main is excessive... Tokens is a good deck, but its a reasonable matchup, and not one you'll be seeing as frequently as abzan midrange.
- I really don't think you need Murk Lurkers in the Ashiok verson as you mill a lot of their burn, plus you main 2 Drown.
- I don't think Pearl Lakes is necessary main but in a PPTQ/IQ it might be so you don't draw as often
- I would heavily consider 27 lands
- I would also consider playing off-color scrylands instead of Flooded Strand
Other than that it seems pretty good. I think I would want some discard mainboard, maybe SB the Strokes instead of the Thoughtseizes.
You guys SB in the 1 Pearl Lake vs Jeskai Tokens? I feel our matchup vs them is so good post board that we don't really need it as it's a dead card in the opening hand. It's nice to finish games faster or bounce lands but I feel it's not needed.
Hey Everyone! I'm just getting back into standard after a year hiatus and am looking for some SB help. I'm currently running the PLA version w/o Ashiok. Some cards I'm specifically looking for info on SBing are Jorubai Murk, silence the believers, prog sphinx, and drown in sorrows. Any chance someone can give me a quick and dirty on best MU's to bring these in for and approx. counts to bring in? I apologize is this was already discussed (as I'm see the Sbing discussion is ongoing) but I could you some spooling up! Thanks guys!

Sphinx comes in vs Mardu, R/G Monsters, and Control matchups.
Silence comes in vs Whip of Erebos decks
Murk-Lurker comes in vs Tokens, Aggro, Burn, etc.
Drown comes in when Lurker comes in, and also vs Mardu
Sphinx can honestly come in against a lot of matchups. It's really good against decks that don't play boardwipes because it allows you to lower your curve and present more threats.
Drown doesn't always come in when Murk Lurker does. I tend to bring in murk lurkers in the mirror and drown definitely doesn't come in there :P.
Sphinx is just good, period. By that, I mean it's a weak Magic card but is strong by comparison to this current format. Aside from Ashiok it's also the only legitimate card advantage engine available to us, and Ashiok shouldn't really be considered a reliable one. This deck has a problem with being a pure draw-go deck in a time when there are decks running piles of cards that single-handedly win the game. Let's say in 20% of games you fall behind because of a tapland or missed land drop and have to play a horrible game of catchup. Do we have the powerhouse cards necessary to flip games around or, even more importantly, crush our opponents the 20% of games they stumble? Last season we had Jace, Revelation, and Elspeth; this season people are only running Dig Through Time, and that card is only midway between Think Twice and Revelation/Cruel Ultimatum. The deck as is is very high-risk, but low reward. Even if you pull ahead with Dig, you're only a few drawsteps away from losing games you've seemingly won.
Unless they print a better CA permanent next set, I'll keep running a playset of Sphinx. It's the only card you can resolve and your have your opponent rightfully feel obliged to scoop.

Have some further questions:
1. What do you take out in the current main board to fit the Pearl Lake Ancient?
2. What do you take out in the current main board to fit the additional land? Also what land will you add to that slot?
Round 1: Abzan Mid-rnge 2-1
Round 2: Jeskai Tokens 1-1-1 (last game drew with opponent at 1 life)
Round 3: Abzan mid-range 0-2 - Couple misplays early in game 1 and game 2 just tough draws and he had a really good start which I never came back from.
Round 4: Weird UG deck 2-0
Cut to Top 8:
Round 5: Abzan Mid-range 2-1 - Messed up game 2 when I needed an island and went to fetch one and realized I had none left. That just totally lost it for me. Otherwise I think I would have won that game. Last game went to sudden death and I won by playing a Radiant Fountain! Woot!
Round 6: Jeskai Tokens 2-0 - I played really tight and just got the cards I needed when they were needed making it a pretty easy win.
Overall I loved this list. Tested against Monogreen devotion and a UW heroic deck which also went well. Any thoughts on the list?
I love the list, dude. The things I would even raise an eyebrow at upon first glance are clearly solid meta calls. I'm sure you can win that match that was a draw with your op at 1 life.
Great job!

Vault is one of the best cards vs Mardu and I wouldn't SB it out, Aetherspouts is also very good vs them. Negate seems bad in the matchup unless you expect them to bring in Planeswalkers out of the SB, and if that's the case then the probably are cutting some of their low drops and you won't need all 4 Drowns.
I'd bring in 2 Negate, 3 Drown, and 1 Aetherspouts and keep the land in as I don't think you can ever afford to SB out lands. If they're on Wingmate Roc then Silence the Believers is also good to bring in.
I use it as a 1-of in the board, it's fun to copy an opponent's Elspeth, then kill theirs.

Now Playing:
EDH:
Derevi, Enchantress
5C Planeswalkers (Child of Alara)
Sharuum
Narset, Enlightened Master
Ezuri Elves
The Mimeoplasm
I'd bring in 2 Negate, 3 Drown, and 1 Aetherspouts and keep the land in as I don't think you can ever afford to SB out lands. If they're on Wingmate Roc then Silence the Believers is also good to bring in.
Modern: UWR Control
EDH: Ezuri, Renegade Leader
Titania, Protector of Argoth
Phelddagrif
Glissa, the Traitor
Rosheen Meanderer
