It might be the engine, but the second is significantly worse than the first, on the exception that both are in play and untouched.
Sounds about right?
It's why I'm on 3.
You're also only running one Underworld Connections in your 75 so where double Courser makes Underworld Connections stupid good as opposed to Courser/Underworld only being real good. I feel like I have a bad matchup against aggro and so Courser helps there. Otherwise against midrange and control, I have a sick game so I'm not too worried about the additional Courser. I added Whip to my sideboard over a second Golgari Charm. I don't know how I feel about that.

The hope is to wreck their hand with Return/Duress/Thoughtseize and then use Underworld to push past them. Similar to what I play against mono-black. I didn't get any of my sideboard cards and so I'm dead in the water, looking like Jund monsters with my Stormbreath being outmatched by Desecration Demon.

Placed 51st with a 7-3 record at SCG Milwaukee. I'll post a tournament report in a bit, along with the list I played.
Hey, I remember you from the last year's Primer.
Great record too. With the new Courser of Kruphix I feel like these Jund lists are looking increasingly midrange-y. Might have to give it a try at some point.
This is the 75 I played at SCG Milwaukee. Not much at all different from what I think I posted before, as I had been playing this one for a while, and felt very comfortable with how I should play each matchup (which I wasn't fully in it until round 3, more on that in a minute.) I had to borrow many of the cards, and my friends Madison and Jed (and a random guy named Kyle, thanks again!) got me set up with Mutavaults, a Thoughtseize, and a number of random pairs of cards. Decklist was quick because I haven't changed it, and almost have it memorized ;), so I quickly sold some cards to repay the entry fee to Madison as I didn't have $ upon arrival, but knew I had trade value.
ROUND 1
After player meeting and round one pairings (Twitter is a lifesaver [follow me @Somadelnocha!] when you're hungry/thirsty, btw) and I was paired against a lady named Jessica, who was playing Naya Hexproof I discovered after I won the roll and she played a turn one Gladecover Scout off of a Stomping Ground. After some clever maneuvering with Abrupt Decay, blocks, and two Stormbreath Dragons, we were on to game 2.
I boarded:
-1 Primeval Bounty
-4 Hero's Downfall
-1 Rakdos's Return
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
-2 Desecration Demon
+3 Mizzium Mortars
+2 Anger of the Gods
+3 Golgari Charm
+2 Lifebane Zombie
She elected to play, beginning with a very naked turn 3 Fiendslayer Paladin, which put me to 14, then 11 when she followed it up with an Unflinching Courage + Ethereal Armor. I managed to combine 2 Golgari Charms and an Abrupt Decay or two to get her empty-handed with a 3/3 Paladin and a Voice of Resurgence in play to get swept away by my Anger of the Gods, and then deployed Ruric Thar and a few Coursers to get there.
ROUND 2 - (1-0, 2-0 in games)
This round I played against a friend of mine, Reza Soulati. Reza and I used to play together when I first started competitive Magic, and he's always played the very consistent decks, where I'm usually on the (Jund) fringe decks, or combo/control. He always brings a strong deck, and when I saw him earlier on in the day, I didn't even bother to ask what he was playing, as I doubted we'd play. OOPS. He was on Mono-Black Devotion, as I soon discovered from his T1 Thoughtseize + T2 Pack Rat. This game I managed to trade Rat for an Ooze early, then ate them with larger creatures once he was mana starved.
I boarded RIDICULOUSLY for this matchup here, going:
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
+2 Pithing Needle
Seriously. Looking back, this was where I went off the rails, and punted hard. Why didn't I bring in Mizzium Mortars? Why didn't I take out Stormbreaths? Pithing Needle over Erebos? I think I even thought about bringing in Golgari Charms?
Anyway, needless to say I got rickrolled (ratrolled?) by T2 Pack Rat in the next two games, and Reza admitted he was afraid of T2 Mortars each time he ran it out. x.X
ROUND 3 - (1-1-0, 3-2 in games)
This round was against a guy named Jason, who seemed nice enough. I won the roll, leading on the old standby of T1 CIPT black source, T2 CIPT land, Thoughtseize you. I saw Island, Connections, Island, Jace, Swamp. I wasn't sure if he was just missing white sources, or he was intentionally on UB Conrol. Needless to say, this midrange deck can dance around removal and counterspell suites with ease, and I quickly destroyed him once I stuck a T3 Whip of Erebos and got him to six. He had 3 cards, a land, Devour Flesh, and a mystery card. I had 10 mana, 4 of it black, and a Mutavault as another. I cast a Desecration Demon, leaving up 2 black sources, Mutavault, and 3 other lands. He snap-Dissolved it, where I tanked for a moment, and allowed it to resolve. I then Whipped back said Demon, who now has haste, and moved to attackers. My opponent had zero Mutavaults, one untapped UB source, and a Devour Flesh + land in hand. He immediately conceded, after struggling to understand why he played it that way. Sam Black, who was seated next to him, gave me a slight shrug of approval of seeing that line.
Game 2 I boarded:
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
-2 Scavenging Ooze
-1 Sylvan Caryatid
+2 Mistcutter Hydra
+2 Pithing Needle
+1 Erebos
Thoughtseize on my T2 was again critical, ripping a Devour Flesh out of his hand to let my follow-up Caryatid stick. When he lost he complained about the lack of black sweepers outside of Drown in Sorrow, and lamented playing white/Esper in this format. When I asked Sam about it later, he said, "Some people just hate playing a color. It happens."
ROUND 4 (2-1, 5-3 in games)
This round was a match against Esper Control, piloted by a gentleman named William. In game 1, my opponent won the roll, lead on a Temple of Enlightenment, which I followed with a Temple of Malice. When he turn 2 played a tapped Watery Grave, and cast an Elixir of Immortality, I immediately and swiftly punished him for it by playing an untapped Overgrown Tomb and promptly doused it in acid, I mean, Abrupt Decayed it. This lead to him casting a sequence of Revelationing for 2 early, and whiffing on gas, to which I Rakdos's Returned him out of cards, and followed up with a Ruric Thar.
SBing proceeded as:
+3 Golgari Charm
+2 Lifebane Zombie
+1 Erebos, God of the Dead
+2 Mistcutter Hydra
+2 Pithing Needle
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
-4 Sylvan Caryatid
-3 Abrupt Decay
(that's right, I played 61 cards against him... or I trimmed a Hero's Downfall. I don't remember.)
Game two was one of EPIC affairs, where I let him have an active Elspeth because I had an active Erebos, Primeval Bounty, Whip of Erebos, Underworld Connections, Sire of Insanity, and Ruric Thar at every point in this game. Connections resolved t3, Bounty on t6, Erebos not long behind, but I was down to 3. Then Whip hit and I went from 8 to 25 life, then ended the game at 52 after drawing and casting both Sire of Insanity, and Ruric Thar, and even Whipped back Ruric Thar for the final turn. MIZE WELL.
ROUND 5 (3-1, 7-3 in games)
This was a match against a RB Devotion deck played by a friendly fellow named Zach. I made some absurd blunders, like keeping a 5-lander, Whip, Stormbreath and getting T1 Thoughtseized on the draw, or not being able to cast my Primeval Bounty on t5 because I sacrificed my Mutavault to an inactive Mogis (?!?!).
I boarded:
-2 Scavenging Ooze
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
-1 Sylvan Caryatid
+3 Mizzium Mortars
+2 Pithing Needle
Game two I manage to get a Whip down, but a quick series of him resolving an Erebos, then his own Whip put me out.
ROUND 6 - (3-2, 7-5 in games)
This is another Esper match, but he gets game one in spectacular fashion, using excellent card containment, playing around things I had and locking it up with an active Jace + Elspeth and me drawing lands off the top.
I board exactly the same as the previous time, but he surprises me with the creature package of Fiendslayer Paladins and Sin Collectors. However, in creature matchups, the midrange deck will succeed, and I proceeded to put him at low life totals and creatureless quickly, and Sire closed up the third game nicely. I love the subgame Sire of Insanity spawns. I like to call it, "Can You Beat a 6/4?!?!" and imagined it being the Rakdos Guildmages' favorite game show.
ROUND 7 - (4-2, 9-6 in games)
This was a quick match against RW Burn, but not how you'd think.
In game one I quickly landed a Caryatid to stop the Ash Zealot he played, and blocked out with Courser of Kruphix followed by a second one, then a Sire of Insanity turned on the "6/4?!?!" subgame, to which he had no answer.
Despite Sire's appearance in the first game, I took him out, favoring the vigilance Ruric (or Thar?) has. He was stuck on double Mountain as his only lands, and quickly we were over.
ROUND 8 (5-2, 11-6 in games)
This round was a possible vengeance matchup, as a gentleman named Alex was piloting a Mono-Black Devotion list. I wanted to prove to myself that this was a matchup that I could win, and set out on my path to victory, smartly playing around Pack Rats, Desecration Demons, and removal galore, including main deck Lifebane Zombies. One of his saw double Stormbreath Dragon, Downfall, and a scry land, and he knew he was done in.
I boarded as follows:
+3 Mizzium Mortars
+1 Erebos, God of the Dead
-2 Polukranos, World Eater
-2 Scavenging Ooze
Game 2 he quickly rolled me with back-to-back Desecration Demons. Happens sometimes =/
Game 3 was a drawn out affair, leaving me with one option. He was at one life, managed to cast a Gray Merchant for 4 life, putting me to 4, and him out of range of a lethal Desecration Demon or Stormbreath Dragon from being Whipped back into play. I only had a Blood Crypt in my hand, and needed either a Rakdos's Return or a second Stormbreath Dragon to not die. I managed to peel Return, and immediately flipped it and said, "Kill you?" My opponent, stunned I one-outered, asked what I was doing? I then explained that I was casting Rakdos's Return for lethal, which he counted my mana and immediately reached for the hand. He wasn't happy about it, to say the least, but I didn't patronize him nor did I rub it in. I was just matter-of-fact about it, and he seemed genuinely happy with the game that had just been played. He knew he was slightly edged, and that this was a possibility. All in all he was a very composed gentleman, and we wished each other the best in the final rounds.
ROUND 9 (6-2, 13-7 in games)
I played against Chris Nighbor this match, and he was on WB Human Aggro. I managed to Thoughtseize away an Ajani on T2, when Necromancer went to work, leaving me behind on board.
My boarding went:
+3 Mizzium Mortars
+2 Anger of the Gods
+2 Lifebane Zombie
-1 Sylvan Caryatid
-2 Hero's Downfall
-1 Primeval Bounty
-1 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
-1 Sire of Insanity
I cut all the fat, added in cheap answers, and I still stumbled on mana a bit in this game, harkening me back to when I posted this list on my Facebook, and Sam had commented that my mana looked atrocious. I couldn't cast a cleansing Anger of the Gods until the turn after I was dead, and could only muster a Desecration Demon that let him cast the Ultimate Price in his hand. I felt very silly after this match, and admittedly my opponent was looking for the rebound win from losing in the X-1 bracket in the 8th round. I wasn't trying to comply, but my deck wanted to. It felt pretty crappy, and I'm not sure what I could've done differently in this position.
I went outside to clear my head for the next round, as losing this round meant losing $50, and losing the next meant I went home empty-handed after 10 rounds.
ROUND 10 (6-3, 13-9 in games)
This was it, final round, and it mattered. Did I come to play for fun, or was I here for a purpose? A gentleman named Dan was my final opponent, and he was playing RB Devotion. I remembered how I struggled in the last match against this deck, and was concerned. I focused very hard on what he was trying to do, and tried to counter each play. I cast Thoughtseizes at pivotal moments, hitting a Lifebane on T2, and a third Lifebane later on. I won game one at 2 life, while he had been at 1 for excessive consecutive turns.
I boarded similarly to the first time facing it, and shuffled up for the next one.
This game became a long slugfest, with me hitting double Desecration Demon and a Reaper early, and some Stormbreath Dragons being whipped back. I ended up being able to exacties him facing swingback-lethal.
FINAL (7-3, 15-9 in games, placed 51st)
I did it (YATTA!) I waited around, filled out the necessary tax forms, and received my $50 and exited the site to the waiting car my girlfriend drove in.
I don't know what I would change, to be honest. It was fairly consistent most of the time.

So am I correct in that the general consensus is creature heavier is better? These lists have started to look a lot like Jund Monsters that trades Mystic for Thoughtseize, Domri for Connections etc. As a Monsters player myself I was interested in seeing what the latest consensus is on the go big technology for the midrange version (it is useful to look at to figure out different sideboard plans against other decks, especially control). What I'm seeing is less Rakdos Return/Sire.. Is it that the split of top end provides different options? Has Primeval Bounty payed off big anywhere in particular? What role does Erebos play. I realize it draws cards, but why over additional connections? Does Devotion play that big of a role or is it that the pacing of the deck is just slow enough that stuff like Blood Baron and opposing Whips actually matter? Is it effective against Control as a mechanism to prevent life gain from Rev?

Primeval Bounty is very effective in matchups where your opponents responses to it are limited, such as against Mono-Black, Red decks, WB Midrange, and some control matchups. Basically, anwhere it will live for a turn or two (or more!) to get value out of it. It's not necessarily that we're splitting Rakdos's Returns for Sire of Insanity, it's that they do different things, despite having similar ideals behind them. Erebos has been valuable as both a way to turn off lifegain, the pseudo-Connections he is, and as an indestructible 5/7. If you read the tournament report I posted, you'll see that in one match, I put 3 counters on an Erebos with a Primeval Bounty, and was attacking with him relentlessly, so he can definitely be active. Desecration Demon, Whip, Connections, and the SBed Lifebanes all do a great job of getting him active and sideways. And yes, bringing him in against decks that will have Blood Baron and/or Whip of Erebos (and Obzedat/Courser, etc) is helpful, if not as just a way to turn off the lifegain, but to outrace these cards through CA.

I think I'll drop an Underworld Connections in my board for Erebos. Now, that I'm back to running DDemon in the main (Polukranos is too susceptible to Lifebane Zombie), Erebos will be good with two Underworld, two DDemon, two Reaper across my 75. Erebos shutting down life gain and a 5/7 body seems worth running, over a third Underworld. And sideboard Lifebanes that I need to work on getting one more.

Ok maybe I should phrase why I'm asking, I just remember time in the metagame not that long ago maybe mid February (like Tom Ross Jund) where 2-3 Returns main was the plan, with additional Sires and Returns out of the board and zero Ruric Thar, Primeval Bounty, Erebos, Whip etc.. So I was curious what changed and how these expensive spells were replaced. I'm gathering Ross didn't have to deal with Burn at that time for one. It seems that instead of saying these 5-6 slots are these 2 spells, it's like these 5-6 slots are these 4-5 spells. So it's more of a general question of if the motivation was diversification? Are particular specific effects not as important? I can see that Erebos is playing a big role in providing a more proactive angle. I am also guessing the is a motivation to slightly curve down or play less X spells too in these decisions. Is it the return of more permission in control matchups? These are just guesses but it seems that these changes would fundamentally change how the deck behaves in certain matchups and if I understood the reason to play this deck a couple months ago had a lot to do with it's choice of top end.

Yep, you're correct on all counts. Diversification was chosen due to not needing as many overlapping effects, and more permanents to provide devotion, or just to combat the meta's demands.

So basically temple jund. Red is kind of a splash for a few cards. I feel sire is better than return as it does its job while being a constant threat at the same time. Have had quite abit of succesd with it through playtests against various drcks. Tested well against bant walkers, esper, various midrange decks any fast aggro deck kinda just shrivels if I get early caryatid or multiple 2 drop kill spells.
Breaks even against the black midrange decks. B/w can be a little bit of a up hill battle but is manageable.
Really struggle against burn just hard to deal with bow helps some but even then can really just be a bad matchup.
It's an early list, but Brain Maggot has been doing some work, especially in place of Sylvan Caryatid, which shouldn't be necessary with the additions of Mana Confluence and the other Temple.

I never really had any color problems and so Mana Confluence only becomes necessary to have an untapped land of that color. BBD and CVM's most recent deck tech demonstrated why I don't want Mana Confluence in the deck. You take a lot of damage from it without always placing a clock on your opponent.
Brain Maggot might be decent, but I've always wanted Caryatid more as a blocker honestly.

I like Maggot MUCH more than Caryatid, as the blocker-aspect is still prevalent (even trading when applicable) and getting their hand contents (AND a card out of it) is much more relevant.

This is the deck i took to fnm and went undefeated last friday (besides the new temple which were just guildgates at the time). I made top 8 got my free rare and dropped because i don't care too much for the encroaching wastes. I'm very happy with the deck. Sylvan caryatid holds this deck together. It lets us play demon, polukranos, planeswalkers etc. a turn earlier and allows us to play courser turn 3 and get value out of playing a land right away. Courser and underworld connections is also great. I only play 1 underworld honestly because i don't like the card. It's bad against all the creature decks. The only decks you want multiple underworlds against are mono black and control. The creature threat is diverse. Polukranos is our new bonfire. Demon is the best 4 drop creature right. At best he's hitting for 6 flying damage at worst he's getting rid of creatures. Stormbreath is a great late game finisher. He's very good against control. He's not thundermaw but in some ways he's better in that he can get bigger. I'm happy with the planeswalkers. I chose xenagos over chandra because he allows us to pressure our opponent and can ramp into a massive rakdos's return, polukranos monstrous, or overload mizzium. Vraska is just a great catch all answer to anything we couldn't kill. I maindecked two golgari charms because they're just that good right now. It counters mono black's removal spells as well as can hit anything from spear, underworld, detention sphere, to chained to the rocks. Sometimes you can even board wipe if they have a board full of one drops. Sideboard is pretty typical. Game 2 you can go completely anti control bringing all the hate. I'm interested in trying the bow of nylea in the side because this deck loses a lot to burn. Anybody have any thoughts?
This isn't the deck for brain maggot. as the maggot is much more of a tempo play. It's only a 1/1 so against aggro it's doing nothing. Plus I don't like ruric thar or sire. They're too expensive. THe only playable six drop right now is elspeth. Sire hurts us too and i'd rather get the one sided effect of rakdos's return. Ruric thar does not belong in this deck because the ratio of creatures to non creatures is usually about the same. What happens when your opponent plays an elspeth and you're at such a low life total you can't dreadbore/downfall it. Sure you can attack it but elspeth's tokens don't care.
Small tweaks, Pharika might replace Primeval Bounty (and Silence the Believers could make an appearance) as GB/x and graveyard decks can be tough to overcome.

3 Swamp (likely end up as forests?)
1 Forest
I want every shock land I could possibly run insofar as they can come into play untapped. I don't know if I want more than eight scry lands. I wouldn't want more than one Mana Confluence and I don't think the deck needs it unless the second Mutavault forces my hand.
I also love Jeff Hoogland's account of Junk without Thoughtseize in the main, with two Thoughtseize and a potential for three Sin Collector in the board. We can't get the GW body, but could run Brain Maggot out of the board or even the four Thoughtseize for the control matchup. His logic is that if we can run answers to everything they play then it is better tempo to let them tap out to be casting those things. I tested a Jund build with no Thoughtseize against BW Midrange and Junk Midrange last night and was tearing it up. It forces the deck into a more controlling position. It will definitely need to be tested more.
Nocturnal God of Chaos of The Æsir Probably the most random person you will ever meet. Trust me on this one. Well, I'm off to poop.

How does your aggro match play differently without the Caryatids? Cutting the Caryatids I feel like would also ransack the mana fixing. Charms and Angers out of the board surely help but do you just concede first game against it? I like the move, but it really forces Mana Confluence into the deck. Is one Underworld Connections enough? And what did you cut to make room for the second Lifebane? I'm curious if that has been doing a lot of work for you or not? I cut Zombies from my 75.

SBing:
+3 Mizzium Mortars
-1 Hero's Downfall
-1 Rakdos's Return
-1 Sire of Insanity

I want every shock land I could possibly run insofar as they can come into play untapped. I don't know if I want more than eight scry lands. I wouldn't want more than one Mana Confluence and I don't think the deck needs it unless the second Mutavault forces my hand.
