I've had mixed success with this guy. He absolutely hoses burny-RDW. I've won on a mul to 3 with Fiendslayer in my hand. But RDW is not a part of the current standard meta.
He's not good enough against monoblue aggro.
He is BORDERLINE in Selesnya. About half their guys will be bigger than him, half smaller. Usually he holds off SOTP and Dryads until they can get Fleecemane and their Wurms.
Against white weenie variants, he's okay at best. He's a brave away from dead. They also side glare of heresy against you. So in these matchups, he's a 1-for-1 which is asking a bit much for 3 mana. I could just play last breath or SOTP.
He seems like he'd be good against the Orzhov aggro decks since everything they have is 2/2 or worse, but I'd frankly rather have last breath to snipe away xanthrid necros or precinct captains.
Is there any other reason to play him out of the sideboard? Or am I missing something.
For what it's worth, I play Rakdos aggro and when a Paladin hits the board I really just feel like scooping. I have pretty much zero outs against him.
Mogis mauraders.
On the topic of paladin, he's not so much a trump as an alternate win con against decks that you think will sb out removal against you(b/x midrange and other control decks). I play him in conjunction with archangel of thune. These guys are a super beating when on the feild together.

When does lightning bolt kill Emrakul? When your opponent's at three.
This guy wins you the game singlehandilly against Burn which is an otherwise extremely unfavorable matchup and he is decent against aggro. He is not the end all-be all but he pulls his weight. Archangel of Thune is another good mention.
He is a necessary evil against a lot of the hyper aggro decks. Control decks especially esper in this meta are pretty much favored or even with the slower aggro decks with few one drops lack of reach and ones that do not have access to BTE. What this card does is keep you out of burn range pre verdict and after verdict it starts creating a virtual Moat like affect on the board along with archangle and the baron. Big creatures (or first strike) along with removal are the best defense against small creatures since you pretty much blank their strategy unlike wrath which is a one time thing.
Good defensive creatures is one of the reasons midrange decks have become so good the past several years since they can play greedy against aggro once they clog the board with creatures while keeping cards that are good in grindy matchups like targetted discard planeswalkers and draw spells. Fiendslayer along with elspeth, baron, and Jace's +1 are great tools to immitate the midrange big creature decks while using minimal slots in our deck to do so.
Fiendslayer Paladin is one of the best cards you can use against pretty much every aggro deck except mono-blue.
It is much better than a removal spell. One removal spell will kill one creature, but one Fiendslayer will hold back at least 3 creatures. When they over extend, you can wrath. As a control deck, all you need is time. Fiendslayers buy time better than all the single target removals.

*Burn
*Rx devotion/aggro with plenty of 1 and 2 drops
And I side in 50-66% of Fiendslayer, depending on how much cards I want to side out, against:
*Wx devotion/aggro with plenty of 1 and 2 drops
